1stThe Indians defeat the Rays, 8-1. Carlos Carrasco is a strike away from hurling a no-hitter when Joey Butler hits an RBI-single for Tampa’s only hit. The safety comes on an 0-2 pitch.

2ndJacob DeGrom pitches into the 6thinning, allowing 4 runs in the Mets, 6-1 loss to Jake Arrieta and the Cubs. DeGrom does hit a double and scores the first Mets run in three games against Chicago. In the three games and 29 innings, it is the first time in 97 years that the Cubs have allowed one run in a 3-game road series.

In a laugher at the Rogers Centre, Boston collects 19 hits to beat the Blue Jays, 12-6. Matt Boyd enters the AL record book as the first starter to give up 7 runs and 2 homers without retiring a batter, as Boston plates 8 in the 1st.  David Ortiz has a 3-run homer and Hanley Ramirez a solo shot. De Aza is a homer shy of the cycle as he drives in 4 runs.

3rdAt Fenway, Houston scores 4 runs in the 10thto whip the Red Sox, 12-8. Ten different Astros score runs in the game, the second time this season (April 28) the Astros have done this. No other team has done it once.

4thKris Bryant hits 2 homers, including a grand slam, and drives in 6 runs to lead the Cubs to a 7-2 win over Miami.  Both homers come off starter Jarred Cosart. Starter Clayton Richard makes his debut for the Cubs and becomes that franchise’s 2,000th player since 1876.

The hits keep coming. Reds rookie Josh Smith doesn’t last 5 innings, but he hits four batters to tie a Reds 106-year old record. He takes the loss, 7-3, against the Brewers. He also earns a trip back to the minors.

C..J. Cron has three hits, including a homer, and collects 6 RBI to pace the Angels to a 13-0 whipping of Texas. He is 14-for-29 against Texas; 13-for-96 against the rest of the league. Hector Santiago ( 7 IP) combines with 2 relievers in the shutout.

5thThe Angels trounce the Rangers, 12-6, as Albert Pujols hits his league-leading 25th HR. He becomes the first player in ML history to hit 25 or more homers in 14 of his first 15 seasons. Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Frank Robinson are the only players to reach the mark in 13 of their first 15 seasons.

Don’t worry, Papi, we’ll make it easy for you. For the first time in 10 years David Ortiz starts at first base for the Red Sox and for the first time in their history there are no putouts at 1B. Mike Napoli takes over for Ortiz as the Sox win, 5-4, against the visiting Astros.

You wonder how many of the 45,180 fans were there at the end? The visiting Phillies and Dodgers play 4 hours and 13 minutes setting a Phillies team record for the longest nine-inning contest in franchise history; the game features 17 runs, 26 hits, nine walks, 10 pitchers throwing a combined 367 pitches and did not end until 11:23 pm PDT. The Dodgers 10, Phillies 7.

6th  John Lackey (7 IP) and two relievers shut out the Cubs, 6-0, at Wrigley Field as the Cardinals maintain their lead in the NL Central. Losing pitcher Jon Lester allows 2 unearned runs in 7 innings but does get his first career base hit.  He came into the game 0-for-68, a ML record to start a career.

In the Class-A Florida State League the Lakeland Flying Tigers defeat the Dunedin Blue Jays, 2-1, on a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 21st. The game lasts five hours and eight minutes, and includes a total of one hour and 18 minutes of rain delays. It was played over two days when inclement weather forced a suspension in the 16th inning on July 5.

7thKansas City sweep a pair from Tampa Bay, winning 9-5 and 7-1. Paulo Orlando hits a 9thinning walkoff grand slam off Brad Boxberger, and Alex Gordon has 7 hits and 6 RBI in the 2 games. John Jaso, who injured his hand on Opening Day, returns to the Rays lineup with a pinch single in game 1 and a double and homer in game 2.

Xander Bogaerts hits a 3-run single in the 7thand Travis Shaw has the first 3 hits of his career to lead Boston past Miami, 4-3.

8thIn the Royals 9-7 win over Tampa Bay, two players hit inside-the-park homers for the first time since 1997.  Alex Gordon pulls a groin muscle and leaves the game after chasing down Logan Forsythe’s inside-the-park shot in the 4th, and Jarrod Dyson, Gordon’s replacement hits one two innings later  Sammy Sosa and Tony Womack hit inside-the-park homers in May 1997, the last time two were hit in a game.

9thThe Marlins shut out the Reds, 2-0, behind Jose Fernandez. The win gives him a streak of 22 consecutive home starts without a loss to start his career. It is the longest such streak since 1914. Fernandez also becomes the third pitcher since 1900 to win each of his first 14 home decisions, joining Johnny Allen and LaMarr Hoyt.

David Murphy drives in 2 runs in the 8thand Trevor Bauer strikes out 9 to give the Indians a 4-2 win over visiting Houston. With the 9 K’s, Bauer helps the Indians become the first team in history to have 4 pitchers notch 100 strikeouts by the All-star break.

Carlos Gonzalez has 3 doubles and Troy Tulowitzki has a hit to extend his consecutive game hitting streak to 21 games in Colorado’s 5-3 win over the Braves.

12th   The Mets defeat the Diamondbacks, 5-3, as Kirk Nieuwenhuis hits three homers for New York. He is the first Mets player to accomplish the feat in a home game. He drives in 4 runs, while Daniel Murphy drives in the other with a solo HR.

The Pirates edge the Cardinals, 6-5, in 10 innings. It is the eighth time in ML history that a team has won a pair of consecutive games, each after having fallen behind in extra innings. The Pirates have accomplished the feat 3 of those 8 times.

13th   The Reds Todd Frazier wins the All-Star Game Home Run Derby, defeating rookie Joc Pederson in the final round.

14th   The AL defeats the NL, 6-3, to win its 3rd consecutive All-Star Game. All nine starters for the NL are from different teams, an All-star game first. Mike Trout hits a HR and becomes the first player to win back-to-back MVP awards in the contest. Jacob deGrom fans 3 batters on a total of 10 pitches in his first All-Star appearance.

17th Just think what he could do if he played more games there! The Yankees beat the visiting Mariners, 4-3, as Kyle Seager accounts for the M’s scoring with a pair of homers. Seager’s last appearance at the Stadium was June 2, 1914 when he collected a double, 2 triples, and a homer. The last visiting player to hit 6 extra-base hits in two consecutive games against the Yankees was Detroit’s Billy Lush in 1903 (Elias Sports Bureau).

The Blue Jays down the Rays, 6-2, with 2 homers and 5 runs in the 5thinning. Rookie Drew Hutchison (9-2) goes six innings and lowers his ERA to 5.19, the highest ERA for any pitcher since at least 1913 with 9 wins in his first 11 decisions. (Elias Sports Bureau).

The Reds Marlon Byrd is 4-for-4 including a homer, and Mike Leake and 3 relievers stop the visitingIndians in a 6-1 Cincinnati win. To preserve the field after a long in-game rain delay the Reds go ahead with a post-game fireworks show but cancel strongman Sean McCarthy’s attempt at a world-record washing machine toss.

18th   The Orioles beat the Tigers, 3-0. Ian Kinsler’s 1st-inning leadoff single of Chris Tillman is Detroit’s only hit.

The Cardinals crush the Mets by a score of 12-2, as Jason Heyward goes 5-for-5, including a double.

19th   The Mets edge the Cardinals, 3-1, in 18 innings. New York strands 25 runners on base, to tie a team record and fall just 2 shy of the ML mark.

The Dodgers shut out the Nationals, 5-0, behind Zack Greinke. He strikes out 11 and extends his scoreless streak to 43 2/3 innings, the 4th-longest such streak since 1961.

Dallas Keuchel strikes out a career-best 13 in 7 innings as host Houston whips the Rangers, 10-0. Luis Valbuena has 4 hits and Colby Rasmus and Preston Tucker hit 2-run homers.

The Indians trip the host Reds, 5-3, in 11 innings, thanks to four walks with the bases loaded and a sac fly.

20thAlbert Pujols has 3 homers for the afternoon as the Angels down the Red Sox, 11-1 and 7-3. Pujols joins the exclusive 500-homer club. His first homer, in the opener, comes off Eduardo Rodriguez, who gives up 7 runs in 1.2 innings.

At Coors, the Rockies take a 7-0 lead over the Rangers after 2 innings, then win it 8-7 in the bottom of the 9thon a walk off hit by  Ben Paulsen. Paulson atones for an earlier bonehead play when he jogged to the dugout with the ball in his mtt, thinking there were two outs. A Texas run scores during the jog.

21stThe Rays edge the Phillies, 1-0, on a homer by rookie pitcher Nathan Karns. The homer is Karns’ first ML hit and comes off Philadelphia hurler Aaron Nola, who is making his ML debut. The game is only the second in ML history in which a rookie pitcher’s HR accounts for the only run in the game. The only other time this occurred was on July 26, 1879 when Harry McCormick of the Syracuse Stars homered against the Boston Red Caps.

The U.S. Treasury Department drops its long and contentious case against Barry Bonds. The case against the slugger was started over a decade ago but resulted in no felony conviction. His only conviction, on an obstruction of justice charge, was overturned in April by an 11-judge panel from the Ninth Circuit.

Franklin Gutierrez hits a pinch grand slam in the 8thinning as the Mariners score 5 runs and beat the host Tigers, 11-9. The slam comes off Neftali Perez, whom the Tigers acquired on July 11 after he refused a minor league assignment by the Rangers.

Matt Holliday hits his 6thcareer grand slam to pace the Cardinals to an 8-5 win over the White Sox. Holliday returned to action last week after missing 31 games because of a strained right quad.

The Rangers shut out the Rockies, 9-0. Shin-Soo Choo hits for the cycle for Texas. Teammate Delino deShields collects 4 hits, missing a cycle by a homer.

22ndAt The Great American Ball Park, the Reds and Cubs split a doubleheader with the Reds winning the opener, 9-1, and Chicago taking the second game, 6-5, with a run in the 9th. They strand 3 runners in the final frame. Joey Votto  has a homer in game 1 and reaches base 9 times in the two games.

23rd   Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers shut out the Mets, 3-0. He becomes the 1st pitcher in the modern era, since 1900, to strike out at least 10 batters, with no runs or walks allowed, in 3 consecutive starts. The last pitcher to have even 2 such starts in a row was Cy Young in 1905.

The Diamondbacks beat the Brewers, 8-3. Zack Godley becomes the first pitcher in the modern era to toss at least 6 scoreless innings, with 7 or more Ks and 0 walks, in his ML debut.

The Athletics send pitcher Scott Kazmir to the Astros for C Jacob Nottingham and P Daniel Mengden.

The Brewers trade 3B Aramis Ramirez to the Pirates in exchange for pitcher Yhonathan Barrios.

24th   The Mets acquire veterans 3B Juan Uribe and UT Kelly Johnson from the Braves in exchange for minor league pitchers Rob Whalen and John Gant. Meanwhile, the visiting Dodgers, led by Justin Turner’s 2 doubles and a homer, beat the Mets’ Jon Niese, 7-2. Niese has reason to be distracted as his wife gives birth today. He is the second Met pitcher Jeurys Familia in April) to pitch on the same day his wife gives birth.

The Marlins trade P Steve Cishek to the Cardinals for P Kyle Barrachough.

The Angels obtain 3B Conor Gillaspie from the White Sox for cash.

25th   Cole Hamels hurls a no-hitter as the Phillies blank the Cubs, 5-0. It is the first time the Cubs have been no-hit in a span of 7,920 games, the longest such streak in modern ML history. The last no-hitter thrown against the Cubs was by Sandy Koufax, in 1965.

Trailing 5-0, the Yankees come back to defeat the Twins, 8-5, with the help of 3 homeruns by Alex Rodriguez.

Miguel Gonzalez (9-6) pitches shut out ball into the 8thand Chris Davis’s 3rd-inning grand slam is the margin as the Orioles beat the Rays, 5-1.

The Mets collect 21 hits and rout the Dodgers by a score of 15-2. Matt Harvey becomes the first pitcher to drive in 2 or more runs in 3 consecutive starts since Andy Messersmith did so for the Braves in 1976.

Madison Bumgarner hits a homer and pitches 7 inning as the Giants beat the A’s, 2-1. It is the first homer by a pitcher against Oakland since 1972.

26th   Craig Biggio, John Smoltz, Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez are inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Mets edge the Dodgers, 3-2, in 10 innings. In the process, they snap Zack Greinke’s scoreless streak at 45 2/3 innings.

The Royals acquire ace Johnny Cueto (7-6) from the Reds in exchange for prospects Brandon Finnegan, John Lamb and Cody Reed. The trade receives a loud ovation when it is announced in the 3rdinning of a 5-1 Royals win over the Astros.

The Giants beat the A’s, 4-3, with Tim Hudson earning the win over the only team he had not defeated in his career. He is the 15thpitcher to defeat all 30 current teams.

David Ortiz is 4-for-5 with 2 homers and 7 RBI as the Red Sox roll over the Tigers, 11-1.

The Rockies drop 10 runs on the visiting Reds in the 3rdinning as they win, 17-7. Nolan Arenado, Ben Paulson and Carlos Gonzalez each homer in the big frame, with the first two going deep again.

27th   The Mets obtain closer Tyler Clippard from the Athletics for minor league P Casey Mesiner.

The last place Red Sox send OF Shane Victorino and cash to the Angels for 2B Josh Rutledge.

28th   Trailing 5-0 after an inning, the Yankees score 11 runs in the 2nd and go on to crush the Rangers by a score of 21-5. Chris Young has a grand slam and 5 RBI as the Yankees collect 20 hits.

The Rockies send SS Troy Tulowitzki and pitcher LaTroy Hawkins to the Blue Jays for SS Jose Reyes and minor league pitchers Miguel Castro, Jeff Hoffman and Jesus Tinoco.

The Phillies trade closer Jonathan Papelbon and cash to the Nationals for pitcher Nick Pivetta.

The Indians trade OF David Murphy to the Angels for SS Eric Stamets.

Again! Mets pitcher Jenrry Mejia is suspended 162 games for use of a prohibited substance.

29th   The Padres defeat the Mets, 7-3. New York’s runs come on three bases-empty roundtrippers by Lucas Duda.

The Royals send pitcher Joe Blanton to the Pirates for cash.

The Pirates trade pitcher Jayson Aquino to the Indians for cash.

30th   The Reds rout the Pirates, 15-5. Brandon Phillips becomes the first player in ML history (since 1920) to have at least 4 hits, 2 HRs, 7 RBIs and 2 steals in a game. Phillips has a pair of 3-run homers.

The Padres come back from a 7-1 deficit to edge the Mets, 8-7. Derek Norris goes 5-for-5, including a grand slam.

Jason Castro clubs a 2-out 3-run homer in the 9thto give Houston a 3-0 win and a sweep of the Dodgers. Scott Kazmir is the winner in his second start since being acquired.

The Mariners trade OF Dustin Ackley to the Yankees for P Jose Ramirez and OF Ramon Flores.

The Giants obtain free-agent-to-be pitcher Mike Leake from the Reds for 1B Adam Duvall and pitcher Keury Melia. Duvall, a University of Louisville grad, had 26 homers in 100 games at Sacramento this year.
