1stThe White Sox score 14 runs in the first 4 innings and hang on to defeat the Indians, 15-10. It is the most runs scored in the first 4 innings of a season opener by any team in modern ML history. Buffalo, of the Players League, scored 16 runs in the first 4 frames of their opener in 1890.  Fausto Carmona takes the loss for Cleveland, allowing 10 runs in 3 innings of work. He is the first pitcher in history to allow at least 10 runs while throwing no more than 3 innings in an opener.

On Opening Night in Oakland Seattle tops the Athletics, 6-2. As a tribute to Dave Niehaus, the long-time Mariners radio and TV broadcaster who passed away during the off season, the bottom of the 3rd is broadcast without a word spoken by the M’s television announcers.

At Kauffman Stadium, the Royals down the Angels, 2-1 when Hawaiian-born Kila Ka’aihue hits a walk-off homer.

In the Opener at Wrigley Field, Pittsburgh’s Neil Walker hits a grand slam off Ryan Dempster to power the Pirates to a 6-3 win over the Cubs. The Pittsburgh native joins Clemente as the only Pirate to hit a grand slam on opening day.

2ndThe Orioles defeat the Rays, 3-1. Baltimore starter Chris Tillman hurls 6 hitless innings, but is removed after throwing 101 pitches. Brian Roberts hits a 3-run homer in the 8thto snap a scoreless tie.

The Blue Jays defeat the Twins, 6-1, on a one-hitter. Rookie Kyle Drabek allows just a single to Denard Span in 7 innings. Shawn Camp and Marc Rzepczynski spell Drabek each with a hitless inning of relief.

At Dodger Stadium, Giants starter Matt Cain and three relievers combine to whitewash to the Dodgers, 10-0. Aubrey Huff has 3 RBIs as does Freddy Sanchez, who has a single, double and homer. Andre Ethier has three hits for LA to start a 30-game hit streak.

At Kansas City, Mike Treanor hits a walkoff 3-run homer in the 13thto give the Royals a 12-9 victory over the Angels. It is the 8thhomer hit in the game. Alex Gordon has 4 hits and scores 4 for KC, while Bobby Abreu has 5 hits and 2 walks for the Haloes.

3rdThe Rangers beat the Red Sox, 5-1, as Ian Kinsler and Nelson Cruz each hit a HR for the 3rdstraight game. They become the first set of teammates to homer in each of the first three games in a season. Kinsler becomes the first player in history to homer in his first official AB in each of his team’s first three games of a season.

The Indians top the White Sox, 7-1. Carlos Santana, playing in his first ML game at first base, starts a triple play for Cleveland. Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera has participated in each of the last three triple plays turned by the Tribe; he turned an unassisted TP in 2008 and took part in one in 2007.

At Wrigley, Pedro Alvarez’s third hit of the game, a single to deep shortstop in the 9th, drives in 2 runs as the Pirates beat the Cubs, 5-4. Matt Garza, in his debut for Chicago, allows 12 singles (no extra base hits) and strikes out 12 in the no-decision.

4thThe Orioles defeat the Tigers, 5-1. They tie the ML record of 4 straight wins from the start of the season, allowing not more than a run in each game.

The Rangers beat the Mariners, 6-4. Nelson Cruz homers for the 4thconsecutive game, becoming the 3rdplayer in ML history to start a season in that manner. Willie Mays (1971) and Mark McGwire (1998) also turned the trick.

5thThe Royals trip the White Sox, 7-6, in 12 innings. It is KC’s 4thconsecutive win in its last AB. Only 2 other AL teams—the 1901 Tigers and 1989 Royals—started seasons in that way.

At Miller Park, Milwaukee edges the Braves, 1-0. Yovani Gallardo of the Brewers becomes the first pitcher since Mark Davis (1983 Giants) to throw a shutout on two hits or less and score his team’s only run. Starter Derek Lowe allows the run in his 6 innings.

Jered Weaver strikes out 6 in 6+ innings as the Angels beat Tampa Bay, 5-3.  Weaver is the first pitcher to twice strike out Manny Ramirez three times in a game.

6thAt Kauffman Stadium, the White Sox score 3 unearned runs in the 12thinning and beat the Royals, 10-7. The Sox are led by Carlos Quentin who hits a single, two doubles and a homer. For the Royals, it is their third straight game of 12 innings or more and they join the 1969 Red Sox, 1962 Orioles and 1952 Browns as the only teams since 1950 to do that.

Tim Lincecum strikes out 13 in 7 innings as the Giants double the Padres, 8-4. Buster Posey has 3 hits, including a homer to drive in 4 runs.

7thThe Indians shut out the Red Sox, 1-0, as Fausto Carmona hurls 7 scoreless innings. He becomes the first pitcher in 106 years to allow 10 or more runs in his first start of the season and then no runs in his next one, without a relief appearance between those 2 games. Rookie Dick Harley turned the trick for the 1905 Boston Beaneaters.

The White Sox down the Rays, 5-1. Tampa Bay becomes the second team since 1900 to start a season with 6 consecutive games in which they never hold a lead. The 1992 Tigers also did it.

8thAt Fenway, the Red Sox finally win a game after starting the season 0-6. Boston tops New York, 9-6, jumping on Phil Hughes for 6 runs in 2 innings. Dustin Pedroia leads the offense with 3 hits, including a HR, and 3 RBIs.

After six straight loses to open the season, Tampa Bay finally wins one, but it takes a 5-run 9thto do it. Dan Johnson’s 3-run homer is the big blow in the 9th, as the Devil Rays beat the White Sox, 9-7.  The Rays will still finish April with a winning record, an ML first after 6 straight loses to being a campaign.

Reports that he had tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance and will face a 100-game suspension causes Manny Ramirez to abruptly announce his retirement. He was 1-for-17 in 5 games with the Rays. In December, MLB will reduce the fine to a 50-game suspension, and in February Manny will sign with the A’s.

10thThe Angels defeat the Blue Jays, 3-1. Jered Weaver fans 15 as he wins his third game of the young season.

11thTampa Bay pounds Daisuke Matsuzaka for 7 runs in the first 2 innings as the beat the host Red Sox, 16-7. Ben Zobrist, Sam Fuld and John Jaso each have two doubles for the Rays. Johnny Damon’s 1st inning homer is the first of five game-winning hits in a row to tie a ML record.  Tampa Bay hitters only strike out 4 times, after having 7 or more in each of the first 9 games of the season, a ML record.

12thThe Angels’ Dan Haren hurls a one-hit, 2-0 shutout over the Indians, ending Cleveland’s 8-game winning streak. He is the first pitcher to earn three wins in a week since Bob Walk accomplished the feat in 1991; Haren registered the W’s with two starts and one relief appearance against the Rays, Blue Jays and Indians. Shin-Soo Choo’s single in the 4thinning is Cleveland’s only safety. Cleveland is the first ML team to post an 8-game winning streak after losing their first 2 games of the season (Elias Sports Bureau).

Alexei Ramirez hits his second homer of the game in the 10thinning to give the White Sox a 6-5 win over the visiting Athletics. Six days after having an emergency appendectomy, Adam Dunn returns to the Sox lineup and goes 1-for-4.

13thThe Cubs defeat the Astros, 9-5. Chicago P Carlos Zambrano ties an expansion-era record by hitting a HR for the 9thconsecutive season. The only other pitcher to accomplish the feat in that time was Gary Peters.

In Detroit, Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge hangs a Red Wings uniform in his locker to bring his the hockey team luck during the Stanley Cup playoffs. It brings Inge luck as he belts a walkoff homer in the 9thas the Tigers beat the Rangers, 3-2.

15thLance Berkman and Albert Pujols each hit two homers as the Cards beat the Dodgers, 11-2, at Dodger Stadium. Colby Rasmus chips in with 3 doubles and Yadier Molina has 4 hits. Kyle Lohse goes 7 innings for the win, while starter Jon Garland takes the loss. Garland also makes the first balk of his career allowing a run to score. It ends Garland’s balk-less string at 2,029.1 innings that had been the longest career-long streak among active major-leaguers.

     At Yankee Stadium, Matt Harrison (3-0) allows an earned run in 8 innings as Texas tops the Yankees, 5-3. The Rangers turn six double plays to help Harrison; First baseman Mike Moreland ties an A.L. record when he is involved in all six and SS Elvis Andrus ties an AL record by starting 5.

18thTim Lincecum strikes out 10 in 7.2 innings and the Giants hit three homers to stop the Rockies, 8-1, at Coors Field. It is the 28th10-strikeout game for Lincecum, which ties him with Christy Mathewson for most 10-strikeout games by a Giants pitcher.

Milwaukee scores 3 runs in the top of the 12thto beat the Phillies, 6-3, as seven consecutive Brewers bat in the frame without being charged with an at bat: the seven register a walk, a sacrifice, a sacrifice fly, a hit-by-pitch, an intentional walk, another sac fly and another IBB.

Detroit’s Max Scherzer (3-0) and 4 relievers stop the Mariners, 8-3 at Safeco Field. The Tigers Ryan Raburn, becomes the first player in the 12-year history of Safeco to hit a ball off its retractable roof when he hits a foul ball into the rafters.

At Dodger Stadium, Brandon Beachy allows 2 hits and no runs in 6 innings to earn his first win of the year, a 10-1 Atlanta blowout of the Dodgers. Brooks Conrad is the first Braves number nine hitter this year to collect a hit when he bats for Beachy in the 6thhitting a single; before Conrad’s safety, the team’s ninth-place hitters had gone 0-for-56. Atlanta has 4 homers in its 14-hit attack.

20thBud Selig announces that he will appoint a MLB representative to oversee all business aspects of the team’s day-to-day operations.

21stBud Selig announces that 904 players who appeared in the ML for less than 4 years from 1947 through 1979 will receive payments of up to $10,000 each in each of the next 2 years in an agreement reached between MLB and the players’ association.

At Citi Field, the Mets hit three homers and stop the Astros, 9-1. Chris Capuano (2-1) allows a run in 7 innings for the win. Jason Bay circles the bases on a 4-base error by Hunter Pence in the 8th, just the 20th four-base error since 1950.

22ndThe Marlins defeat the Rockies, 4-1, as Anibal Sanchez hurls a 1-hitter. Dexter Fowler’s broken-bat single leading off the 9this Colorado’s only safety.

The Rangers beat the Royals, 11-6, and tie an AL single-game record by hitting a homer in 5 consecutive innings. The feat was last accomplished by the Athletics in 2003.

23rdThe Yankees rout the Orioles, 15-3, as Alex Rodriguez hits a grand slam and drives in 6 runs. It is the 14thtime in his career that he driven home 6 runs in a game to tie Lou Gehrig’s ML mark. CC Sabathia allows 3 run in 8 innings as he coasts to his first win of the year in New York’s 15-3 win over the Rangers. Russ Martin hits 2 homers and drives in 4 runs, while Jorge Posada and Brett Gardner homer.

At Arlington, the Rangers pound the Royals, 11-6, hitting homers in five consecutive innings to tie the AL record. Mike Napoli starts the barrage in the 3rd, followed by Kinsler, Murphy, Beltre and Moreland.

24thAt Wrigley, the Dodgers roll Carlos Zambrano like an Easter egg, scoring 5 runs in the 1ston their way to a 7-3 win. It is Zambrano’s first loss after 10 straight wins going back to last year. The Cubs drop to a 10-11 mark after setting an odd ML record of going 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, etc. up to 10-10. When they reached 9-9 they matched a mark last accomplished in 1928. Prize rookie Starlin Castro has a RBI but goes hitless. Castro has 35 hits in first 20 games, the most for a Cub since 1936 when Frank Demaree had 36 and Billy Herman had 35.

26thJorge de la Rosa (4-0) pitches the Rockies to a 4-3 win over the host Cubs, helped by a pair of homers by Todd Helton. Kosuke Fukudome, who went 5-for-5 in yesterday’s loss to the Rox, doesn’t start but is hitless as a pinch hitter.

27thThe Padres lose to the Braves, 7-0. It is the 7thtime this season the Padres have been shut out, setting a record for the month of April. No team has been shut out 7 times before May 1.

28thThe Rays sweep the Twins in a DH, winning the first game by a score of 15-3 and the nightcap, 6-1. Tampa Bay’s Ben Zobrist gets 4 hits and drives in 8 runs in the opener and adds 3 more hits and 2 more RBIs in the nightcap. He becomes just the third ML to have at least 7 hits and 10 RBIs in one day. Jim Bottomley turned the feat in 1929, Pete Fox in 1935, and Nate Colbert in 1972.

Jon Lester improves to 14-0 against the Orioles as the Red Sox beat the Birds, 6-2. The win averts a sweep by Baltimore.

What’s she doing in a bar? A St. Petersburg bar & grill holds a Sam Fuld look-alike contest and the winner is an 8-year-old girl.

29thJason Marquis improves to 3-0 with a 3-0 shutout of the Giants. The Nationals get all their runs off Tim Lincecum, who goes 7 innings.  SF’s Pablo Sandoval is 0-for-3 and will not play again for 6 weeks because of a broken right hand.  Pablo thinks he suffered the injury on a slide into 2B against the Pirates.

At Cleveland, the Indians score 3 in the 7thon 2 homers to tie the Tigers at 5 apiece, and win in in the 9thwith a walkoff grand slam by Carlos Santana off Joaquin Benoit.  The final is 9-5.

30thThe Padres defeat the Dodgers, 5-2. Andre Ethier gets a pair of hits for LA to extend his hitting streak to 26 games, the longest ever for the month of April.

In Cleveland, the Indians bullpen holds the Tigers scoreless for 7 innings before the Indians score in 13thto beat the Tigers, 3-2. Before the game the Indians honor John Adams, who has been pounding a bass drum at Indians games for 37 years. On Wednesday, Price logged his 3,000th game. The club honors his achievement with a special celebration that includes an on-field drumline composed of 300 Tribe fans. Joe Charboneau then throws out a ceremonial first pitch that Adams drums down the 3B line for a bass hit.
