3rdTampa Bay releases James Loney, who will sign next week with the Padres. San Diego will sell the vet to the Mets in late May and he will have a solid season in New York.

4thQuite a story. At Chase Field, rookie Trevor Story hits homers in the 3rdand 4thinnings off Zach Greinke as the Rockies double the Diamondbacks, 10-5.  Story is just getting started.

Cole Hamel hands Felix Hernandez his first opening-day loss as Texas defeats the M’s ace with just one hit. Prince Fielder’s bloop single scores a run in the Rangers 3-run 5ththat includes 3 walks and 2 errors.

Ouch! The Dodgers score 15 runs to beat the Padres, 15-0, in the opener at San Diego. This sets a ML record for most runs in a shutout on opening day. Clayton Kershaw allows one hit and strikes out 9 in 7 innings. With no walks.

After a series of defections, there are 23 Cubans on opening day rosters.

5thAt Chase Field, Trevor Story hits another homer, but his Rockies fall, 11-6. He will hit another tomorrow, his 4thof the year.  His first four hits going for homers is a ML record.

After a washout yesterday, the Yankees fall to Houston, 5-3 in the season opener. Dallas Keuchel, who beat New York three times last year in 22 scoreless innings, continues his domination, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs in 7 innings.

6th  In the Nationals 3-1 win over the host Braves, center fielder Michael Taylor throws out two runners at 2B in the 4thinning for Washington.

Trevor Story hits his 4thhomer in 3 games, the first time in history that’s happened, as the Rockies edge the host Diamondbacks, 4-3. Story is the first player in history to hit a HR for each of his first four hits.

The Yankees score 12 runs in the first three innings and roll to a 16-6 thrashing of the visiting Houston Astros.  Michael Pineda struggles through 5 innings to record his first win of the year. Starlin Castro has 4 hits including a 3-run homer, to drive in 5 runs, and Mark Teixeira also hits a 3-run homer. Pineda gives up the first grand slam of his career, a 3rdinning blast by George Springer, and two homers by Carlos Correa. The Yanks pin the loss on Collin McHugh, who leaves the game after recording one out. This is the first game in New York following a ban on smokeless tobacco signed by mayor Bill DeBlasio.

Jarrod Saltalamaccia homers and drives in 4 runs as Detroit wins at Miami, 7-3. The loss is the first at home after 27 starts for Marlins ace Joe Fernandez. He had been 17-0 at Marlins Park, the most consecutive home wins to start a career in ML history.

Kenta Maeda makes his ML debut for the Dodgers and it is a good one. He throws 5 shutout innings against San Diego and also homers in his first ML at bat to tie a ML record. The Dodgers win at Petco Park, 7-0.

7th  Hunter Pence hits an 8thinning grand slam and Joe Panik drives in 3 runs and ignites a Giants comeback as they beat the Dodgers in their home opener, 12-6. Three innings earlier the Dodgers’ pitchers 31-inning scoreless streak to start the season ended, one inning shy of the 1963 Cardinals’ record to start a season.

Jay Bruce homers twice and drives in 5 runs and Eugenio Suarez hits his first grand slam to lead the Reds to a 10-6 win over the Phillies. The Reds score 8 times in the 4th. The Reds top pitching prospect, Robert Stephenson, makes his ML debut and allows 3 earned runs in 5 innings.

At Chase Field, Anthony Rizzo hits his second homer of the year and drives in 6 runs as the Cubs roll to a 14-6 win over the Diamondbacks.  John Lackey wins his first despite giving up 6 runs.

8th  In Toronto, Josh Donaldson clubs a grand slam, off Joe Kelly, as the Jays score 6 runs in the 3rdinning. It is not enough, however, as the Red Sox win, 8-7.

At Arizona, Yasmany Tomas breaks a 2-2 tie with the Cubs by hitting a 9th-inning RBI single. The Diamondbacks win, 3-2. The loss snaps the Cubs streak of 4 straight road wins to start the season. They have not done that since 1934, when they started with five road wins. Chicago will win their next five.

At San Diego, Rockies rookie Trevor Story homers in his 4thstraight game to start the season, but Colorado loses, 13-6. Story now has 6 homers in 4 games to begin the season, a rookie and regular ML record.  Matt Kemp has 4 hits, including a 3-run homer, to lead San Diego.

What’s a boy gotta do? In his ML debut Dodger pitcher Ross Stripling takes a no-hitter into the 8th, but gets lifted after a one-out walk. His replacement Chris Hatcher then serves up a 2-run homer to Giants catcher Trevor Brown. After another walk Hatcher is upset about the umpiring and A.J. Ellis tries to placate him. Manager Dave Roberts comes out to show his support and is thumbed out.  Brandon Crawford ends the game, 3-2, with a homer in the bottom of the 10thoff Joe Blanton.

Aledmys Diaz hits two homers off Bronson Arroyo as the Cards top the Reds, 10-4. The 40-year-old Arroyo was just called up to start the game today, becoming the oldest pitcher called up by the Reds since Hod Lisenbee was brought up from the minors on June 8, 1945, at age 46.

9thThe Giants Madison Bumgarner hits another homer off Clayton Kershaw, but neither pitcher is around when the Dodgers win, 3-2, in the 10th.

Atlanta releases veteran Michael Bourn, who will sign with the Diamondbacks.

At Coors Field, the Padres enjoy themselves, winning 16-3. Matt Kemp has a pair of homers off Jorge de la Rosa to drive in 6 runs, and Cory Spangenborg hits a 3 run homer.

10th At Anaheim, rookie Nomar Mazara homers in his first at bat to tie a ML record. He adds two more hits but the Angels shrug it off to beat Texas, 3-1. Jered Weaver is the winning pitcher.  It is Weaver’s 139th career win as he moves into second place on the franchise wins list behind Chuck Finley.

Coco Crisp hits a 2-out homer in the 10thas the A’s edge the Mariners, 2-1. Felix Hernandez strikes out 10 in 7 scoreless innings for the M’s.

Trevor Story hits his 7thhomer in six games to help the Rockies beat the Padres, 6-3. Story’s homer is one of five solo homers for Colorado. Carlos Gonzalez hits a pair.

Brandon Moss and Matt Carpenter each hit 3-run homers to lead the Cardinals to a 12-7 win over the winless Braves. The Braves also lose starter Dan Winkler, who suffers a fractured right elbow while throwing a pitch in the 7th. He will miss the rest of the season.

13th At Coors Field, the Rockies pummel Giants starter Jake Peavy and win, 10-6. Peavy gives up 11 hits in 4 innings, 9 for extra bases. Rookie Nolan Arenado has a pair of homers and 7 RBIs, while Trevor Story has a pair of triples for the Rox.

Small ball. The Phils use three bunt singles and a suicide squeeze by Jeremy Hellickson to beat the Reds, 3-2. Hellickson (3-2) allows 2 unearned runs in 7 innings. Tyler Goeddel has a 2-run triple for the Phils.

14th  Mike Foltynewicz tosses 8 shutout innings as the Braves stop the Royals, 5-0.  Mallex Smith has 3 hits, including Atlanta’s first triple of the year. They are the last team to collect one. They are also looking for their 10thhomer: every other team has hit at least 29.

15th  Down 5-1 in the 7that Arlington, the Orioles hit 4 homers and score 9 runs in the inning to beat the Rangers, 11-5. Two of the homers in the 7thare hit by Mark Trumbo to tie the ML record. Jonathon Schoop homers in the 7thand adds another in the 8th.

16th  Doesn’t portend well. At Yankee Stadium, New York drops its second in a row, 3-2, to Seattle. And, for the second game in a row, the Yankees go 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

The Tigers stake Jordan Zimmermann (6-2) to an 8-run lead after one inning and the veteran takes full advantage, allowing 8 runs and striking out 9 in Detroit’s 10-8 victory over the Twins. Zimmermann goes 7 innings. He is the first pitcher since Lefty Grove on May 30, 1927 to allow that many runs, strike out 9 or more, and walk away with a win.

17th  The Mets score 3 runs in each of the first two innings against Corey Kluber (0-3) to beat the host Indians, 6-0. Stephen Matz goes 7 innings for the win. Mets relievers Jerry Blevins and Addison Reed each strike out 2 batters in the 9th.

18th  Jeremy Hellickson, helped by a rare thing—a Phillie homerun—beats the Marlins, 4-2.  It is the 15thstraight Phillie win by 3 runs or less.

20th  It takes the Phillies 16 games to reach double figures in hits, and they need extra innings to do it. Two hits, a walk and a wild pitch plate the winning run in the 11th, as the Phils (7-9) top the Mets, 5-4.

21st  An embarrassment of riches. Jake Arrieta (4-0) throws a no-hitter, walking 4 and striking out 9, as the Cubs roll by the  host Reds, 16-0.  Kris Bryant has 4 hits, including a pair of homers, one a grand slam. He scores 4. Zobrist, Ross and Rizzo also homer as the Cubs go to 12-4.

Entering the 7thinning with the score tied 2-2, Yankee reliever Chasen Shreve is jolted when his first two pitches are hit for homeruns. Khris Davis and Coco Crisp do the damage. Oakland wins, 7-3, over the Yankees.

22ndThe White Sox use 7 shutout innings by Jose Quintana and a triple play to beat the Rangers, 5-0.  The Sox pull off the triple killing in the 7thinning, the play going 9-3-2-6-2-5, a first in ML history.

The Mets beat the Braves in Atlanta,  6-3, to start an 8-game win streak that will end May 1. Curtis Granderson supplies the offense with a grand slam and a solo homer.

Wil Myers is 3-for-3 including a homer, to drive in 3 runs in support of Andrew Cashner, as the Padres beat the Cardinals, 4-1. Myers also does not strike out, snapping a streak of 16 straight games with a K. He will end the season with 160 K’s, not even in the top five.

In Florida, Max Scherzer goes 8 innings for the Nationals as they beat the Marlins, 8-2. Giancarlo Stanton strikes out twice but has a hit.  He has struck out 17 times in his last 20 at bats. He ties a record for a 6-game span.

The Yankees tie the game with the Rays in the 5thinning on Jacoby Ellsbury’s straight steal of home with 2 out in the 5thinning. Brian McCann’s RBI single in the 6thputs the Yankees ahead. The final is 6-3. Ellsbury’s theft is the first straight steal of home by a Yankee since May 5, 2001 when Jeter did it. Ellsbury did it once while a Red Sox in 2009 against the Yankees.

Toronto first baseman Chris Colabello is suspended 80 games without pay after testing positive for performance enhancing drugs. The former Independent league player hit .321 with 15 homers last year.

23rdJose Abreu hits a bases-loaded single in the 11thinning to give the White Sox a 4-3 win over the visiting Texas Rangers.

Tanner Roark strikes out 15 and allows just 2 hits in 7 innings to propel the Nationals past the Twins, 2-0. Two relievers add 3 strikeouts as the 18 K’s is the most for the franchise since arriving from Montreal in 2005.

Jose Fernandez (1-2) allows 4 runs in 7 innings as the Marlins lose to the Giants, 7-2.  Jake Peavy pitches a solid 7 innings for the win and Gregor Blanco supports him with a pair of triples.

Colby Rasmus hits a tie-breaking grand slam in the 5thto pace the Astros to an 8-3 win over the visiting Red Sox. Rasmus drives in 5.

24thBryce Harper delivers a pinch homer in the 9thto tie the game, pitcher Oliver Perez lays down a bunt in the 15th to keep the game going, and Chris Heisey homers in the 16th as the Nationals top the Twins, 6-5. The game takes 5 hours and 56 minutes.

A group of baseball documents from 1857, including “The laws of base ball” by Doc Adams is auctioned for $3.26 million. “Laws” was auctioned once before, in 1999, by Sotheby’s, and sold for $12,850.

26thAt Coors Field, the Pirates belt 5 homeruns, 3 by Andrew McCutcheon, to beat the Rockies,  9-4. McCutcheon drives in 5 runs.

Robinson Cano leads the Mariners to an 11-1 victory over the Astros. Cano hits a grand slam and drives in 6 runs.  Starter Nathan Karns allows 2 hits and no runs in his 7 innings.

27thAt Fenway, Dustin Pedroia has a grand slam and a solo homer and David Ortiz bangs three doubles as the Red Sox beat the Braves, 9-4. Freddie Freeman homers for Atlanta, their first four bagger in 16 games.

Brandon Belt is a homer shy of the cycle as he drives in 5 runs in San Francisco’s’ 13-9 win over the Padres. Winner Jeff Samardzija (3-1) breaks a tie with a 2-run single.

28thJake Arrieta’s bid for a second no-hitter ends on his 5thpitch and his Wrigley Field scoreless streak is stopped at 52.2 innings. But he wins his 16thconsecutive decision, 7-2 over the Brewers, the longest streak in over a decade. His streak of consecutive quality starts also ends at 24, two shy of Bob Gibson’s mark set in 1967-68.

Manny Machado has a grand slam and a career-high 5 RBI to lead the Orioles to a 10-2 win over the visiting White Sox.  Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo add back-to-back dingers in the 3rd.

29thAt Citi Field, the Mets trounce the Giants, 13-1, using a franchise-record 12-run 3rdinning to do it. Yoenis Cespedes hits a grand slam and drives in 6 runs in the big frame, a Mets record, and sets another franchise mark with his 9thstraight game with an extra-base hit. Steven Matz (3-1) is the winner with 6 scoreless innings.

At Miller Park, Miami pitcher Adam Conley is lifted in the 8thinning despite not allowing a hit. Conley walked a batter in the 8thbut, with 2 outs and a 5-0 lead, his is lifted for Jose Urena ending his no-hit bid. Urema gets the final out in the 8th, but is nicked for 3 runs and relieved in the 9th. Miami wins, 6-3.
