2ndThe Brewers sign free agent P Jared Hughes to a 1-year deal.

The Rays defeat the Yankees, 7-3, in the MLB season opener. Chris Archer gets the first win of the new season, while Evan Longoria hits the first homerun. New York’s Masahiro Tanaka becomes the first pitcher in modern ML history to allow at least 2 earned runs in each of the first 3 innings while starting his team’s first game of a season.

The Diamondbacks bounce back from 3 deficits before scoring a run on Chris Owings’ walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th to edge the Giants, 6-5, in the NL season opener. Madison Bumgarner hurls 5 perfect innings for SF, and becomes the first pitcher in ML history to homer twice on Opening Day.

3rdThe Dodgers crush the Padres, 14-3, in their season opener. Yasmani Grandal becomes the third player in ML history to hit homers from both sides of the plate in a season opener.

The Nationals beat the Marlins, 4-2, in their season opener. Bryce Harper hits a HR to tie the ML record for homers for any player in his first 5 career opening-day games. Herman Long and Xavier Nady also turned the trick.

4thThe Tigers open their season with a 6-3 win over the White Sox. Tiger rookie JaCoby Jones hits a HR and steals a base for Detroit. In do so, he becomes just the first player since Ben Steiner in 1945 to hit his first homer and steal his first base in the same season-opening game.

The Padres shut out the Dodgers, 4-0. They become just the second team in ML history to win its second game of the season by a shutout after losing its opener by at least 10 runs. The feat was also accomplished by the 1902 Tigers.

6th  The Reds defeat the Phillies, 7-4. Cincinnati relief P Michael Lorenzen becomes the second pitcher since 1988 to hit a pinch, game-winning homer. Brooks Kieschnick did so for the Brewers in 2003. Daniel Nava hits a pair of roundtrippers for Philadelphia, and he becomes the first player since 1900 to homer in his first plate appearance in the majors, and later homer in his first plate appearance for the team against which he homered in his first plate appearance. Got that?

Brett Cecil gives up 4 runs in relief, including a 3-run homer to Kyle Schwarber, as the Cubs beat the Cardinals, 6-4. Cecil also unloads a wild pitch that bounces and sticks to the chest protector of catcher Yadier Molina. When asked if he put any substance on his protector, Molina snaps, “That’s a dumb question.”

The Rangers sell P Andrew Faulkner to the Orioles.

The Braves sign 37-year-old slugger Ryan Howard to a minor-league contract, but after a month will release him. The Rockies will sign him in August but that will not last either.

7th In Arlington, the Rangers double the A’s, winning, 10-5, behind the hitting of Nomar Mazara. Nomar has 3 hits, including a grand slam off starter Raul Alcantara, and drives in 6 runs.

Christian Yelich hits his first homer of the year and the Marlins trip the host Mets, 7-2. Before the game, 80-year-old former major-league pitcher Phil “The Vulture” Regan tosses batting practice for the Mets.

Playing for the Mets minor league A Columbia (SC) Fireflies, Tim Tebow homers in a 14-7 win over the Augusta Greenjackets.

The Rockies send P Miguel Castro to the Orioles for a player to be named.

8thThe Phillies score 12 runs in the 1st inning—including 10 off birthday boy Jeremy Guthrie—and go on to defeat the Nationals, 17-3. Only two pitchers since 1900 have allowed 10 runs on their birthday, but neither in a single inning. Chicago’s Sloppy Thurston surrendered 11 to Detroit in 1925 and the Braves’ Al Demaree 10 to the Pirates in 1919.

The Rockies edge Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers, 4-2. Kershaw surrenders back-to-back homers to Mark Reynolds and Gerardo Parra, marking the first time he has done so in 1,772 ML innings. It is the longest run of innings to start a career with giving up consecutive HRs since Greg Maddux went 2,806 innings without doing so.

9thTrailing 9-3 entering the 9th inning, the Angels score 7 runs to walk off with a 10-9 win.

Orioles pitches walk 11, including Matt Holliday 5 times, as the Yankees edge the Birds, 4-3. Aaron Judge ties the game at 3 apiece with his first homer of the year, off Mychal Givens in the 8th.

The Astros edge the Royals, 5-4, as George Springer hits his 3rd leadoff homer of the season in Houston’s 7th game. No player ever hit as many in his team’s first 7 games. Brian Dowling hit 3 walk-off HRs in the Angels first 9 games in 1987.

10thThe Yankees gaff the Rays, 8-1, in their home opener. Michael Pineda retirees the first 20 batters he faces, becoming the first pitcher since J.R. Richard in 1980 to take a perfect game into the 7th inning in his team’s home opener. The temperature at game time iw 76 degrees, the warmest home opener for New York since 1960. It was 36 last year.

The Padres defeat the Rockies, 5-3. Will Myers becomes the player this season to hit for the cycle, and only the second player in Padre history to do so. Matt Kemp turned the trick in 2015.

The Reds defeat the Pirates, 7-1, as Pittsburgh starter Tyler Glasnow (1 2/3 innings) and Cincinnati starter Brandon Finnegan (2 innings) each walk 5 batters. It is the first time since the mound was moved back in 1893 that both starting hurlers walked at least 5 batters while pitching 2 innings or less.

11th    The Mets pound out 20 hits, including 7 HRs, and defeat the Phillies, 14-4. Yoenis Cespedes hits 3 of the round-trippers for New York. The Mets will sweep the series, their 15th in the last 17 series versus the Phils.

Marcell Ozuna homers twice and drives in 6 runs as Miami beats the visiting Braves, 8-4. Ozuna’s second homer chases a cat onto the field, which eludes Giancarlo Stanton and takes refuge in the animatronic home run sculpture.

The Angels bounce back from a 5-0 deficit in the 7th inning to defeat the Rangers, 6-4, in 10 innings. They are the fifth team in ML history to win consecutive games in which they overcame a deficit of 5 or more runs in the 7th inning or later. The feat was also accomplished by the 1911 Cardinals, the 1942 Indians, the 1953 Dodgers and the 1991 Yankees.

The Astros beat the Mariners, 7-5. George Springer hits his 4th leadoff homer of the season for Houston in the team’s 9th game of the year.

13th    The Brewers trade P Damien Magnifico to the Orioles for future considerations.

14th    The Orioles sell P Oliver Drake to the Brewers.

15th    The Mariners defeat the Rangers, 5-0. James Paxton throws 8 scoreless innings, following up on his first two starts of 6 and 7 scoreless frames. He becomes the 4th pitcher in AL history to throw at least 6 innings without allowing a run in each of his first 3 games of a season. The feat was previously accomplished by Ray Caldwell (1914), Luis Tiant (1966) and Jordan Zimmermann (2016).

Justin Verlander gives up 9 runs, including 3 homers, in 4 innings as the Tigers lose to the Indians, 13-6. Jose Ramirez has 4 hits and 6 RBIs for Cleveland.

The Twins shut out the White Sox, 6-0, on Ervin Santana’s 1-hitter. Omar Narvaez’s 3rd-inning single is Chicago’s only safety.

16thTrey Mancini has his second 2-homer night in three games as the Orioles thump the Jays, 11-4.  Stretching back to last season, Mancini has hit 7 homers in the first 12 games of his career, just the third player since 1913 to do that. He joins Trevor Story (2016, Colorado), and Dino Restelli (1949, Pittsburgh).

17th    The Orioles trade P Parker Bridewell to the Angels for cash.

The Yankees send P Johnny Barbara to the Pirates for cash or a player to be named.

18thAdam Duvall has a grand slam and 5 RBIs for the Reds, who score 9 runs in the first 3 innings in beating the Orioles, 9-3. Reds starter Bronson Arroyo pitches 5 innings for the win.Arroyo becomes the first 40-year-old Reds pitcher (40 years and 53 days) to earn a win since Walter “Boom-Boom” Beck (40 years and 227 days of age) on May 31, 1945.

21st     The Rockies score all 6 runs in the 4th inning and hold on to defeat the Giants, 6-5. Colorado’s runs score on a grand slam by Trevor Story and an inside-the-park homer by Charlie Blackmon. The Rockies become the first NL team since 1950 to hit both a grand slam and inside-the-park HR in the same inning.

22nd   The Blue Jays trade 3B Ty Kelly to the Phillies for cash.

The Cubs defeat the Reds, 12-8. Chicago’s #3 hitter, Anthony Rizzo, hits a 3-run HR in the top of the 1st inning, and Cincinnati’s #3 hitter, Joey Votto, hits a 3-run blast in the bottom of the inning. It is only the second time since 1900 that each team’s third batter in the lineup hits a 3-run round-tripper in the 1st inning of a game. Alex Rodriguez and Miguel Tejada turned the trick in a Yankees-Orioles game in 2004. Also hitting a 3-run homer is Jason Heyward as teammate Willson Contreras adds his first ML grand slam.

In Arizona’s 11-5 win over the visiting Dodgers, David Peralta ties the ML record with 4 doubles.

23rd   The Phillies beat the Braves, 5-2. Cesar Hernandez, Aaron Altherr and Odubel Herrera clout back-to-back-to-back HRs in the 8th inning for Philadelphia.

Daniel Murphy hits a grand slam, and the Nationals complete their sweep of the Mets with a 6-3 win.  Murphy now has 25 RBIs in 22 games against his former team.

The Red Sox defeat the Orioles, 6-2, as rookie Andrew Benintendi goes 5-for-5 for Boston.

The Angels deal OF Ryan LaMarre to the Athletics for a player to be named.

24th    Jason Heyward hits a 1stinning 3-run homer and the Cubs score 9 in the first two innings and go on to beat the Pirates, 14-3. Rookie Dovydas Neverauskas pitches the last 2 innings for the Bucs, becoming the first Latvian born player in the majors.  Pittsburgh will send him down after his appearance and will replace him with infielder Gift Ngoepe, the first major leaguer born in South Africa.

The Braves trade P David Hernandez to the Angels.

25th    The Brewers crush the Reds, 9-1. Eric Thames hits his 11th HJR o the season, and 8th against the Reds. He becomes the 4th player in ML history to hit 8 homers against one opponent in a single month. Others to accomplish the feat are Babe Ruth against the Athletics in May 1930, Willie Stargell against the Braves in April 1971, and Deron Johnson against the Expos in July 1971.

The Nationals pound the Rockies, 15-12, as Trea Turner hits for the cycle and drives in 7 runs.

26th    The Pirates edge the Cubs, 6-5, as SS Gift Ngoepe makes his ML debut for Pittsburgh, becoming the first player from the continent of Africa to appear in an ML game. He goes 1-for-2 and turns a game ending double play.

27thBlink and you missed it. At Fenway, the Yankees whip the Red Sox, 3-0, in 2 hours 21 minutes, the shortest game between the two since 1994. Neither team draws a walk and the total number of pitches is 217.

28thEight homeruns leave the park in the Yankees come-from behind 14-11 extra inning win against the Orioles. The longest is Manny Machado’s 470 foot drive in the 4th, but the most decisive is Matt Holliday’s walkoff homer in the 10thas the Yankees rally from a 9-1 deficit. Aaron Judge hits two homers, including one with an exit velocity of 119.4, surpassing the record by Stanton on 119.2 mph. Jacoby Ellsbury hits a grand slam to match a slam by the O’s Mark Trumbo.

29th    The Rangers defeat the Angels, 6-3. Carlos Gomez hits for the cycle for the second time in his career. He previously did so in 2008.

The Braves trounce the Brewers, 11-3, as Matt Kemp hits 3 HRs.

YasIel Puig, Cody Bellinger and Justin Turner hit back-to-back-to-back HRs in the 9th inning to spark a Dodger comeback in their 6-5 win over the Phillies.

30th    The Nationals pound out 23 hits and crush the Mets, 23-5. Anthony Rendon goes 6-for-6, including 3 HRs, and drives in 10 runs for Washington. 30th  After refusing an MRI exam, Noah Syndergaard (1-2) leaves his start—and his 2017 season—against the Nationals with what turns out to be a partial tear of his right lat muscle. The only time Mets fans will see him this summer is a cameo role on Game of Thrones where Thor is chucking a spear. He will rehab in September.

Justin Bour has 4 hits, including a double and a homer, and drives in 6 runs to lead the Marlins to a 10-3 win over the visiting Pirates.
