2008 August

1st      The White Sox edge the Royals, 4-2, in Ken Griffey Jr.’s debut with the team. Griffey bats 7th in Chicago’s lineup, becoming only the second player in ML history with as many as 600 homers to bat as low as 7th in a starting lineup. Hank Aaron did so in 1975 for the Brewers.

In his debut ML game. Texas pitcher Tommy Hunter is charged with pitcher interference on just the second batter he faces, who hits a grounder to the first baseman. His catcher Gerald Laird is then charged with catcher interference, but the Blue Jays fail to score in the first inning. They plate 6 runs in the next 4 innings against Hunter, who escapes with no decision.  Toronto scores 2 runs in the top of the 9th against CJ Wilson, but Texas scores 3 times in the bottom of the 9th for a 9-8 decision. David Murphy drives in the tying and winning runs with his third and fourth RBIs.

2ndThe Indians beat the Twins, 5-1. Minnesota P Kevin Slowey does not issue a walk in 6 innings of work. It is the 15th time in 28 career starts that Slowey has not issued a walk, the highest total through 28 starts in modern ML history. The previous high was 14 by Josh Towers.

3rdAt the Stadium, the Yankees score 10 runs in the 7thand 8thinnings to come back and beat the Angels, 14-9. Xavier Nady has 4 hits, including a double and homer, to drive in 6 runs for New York. Edwar Ramirez (3-0) gives up to Mark Teixeira in an inning of work but gets the win. Reggie Willits scores 3 runs in no at bats as he walks 4 times. Chone Figgins scores 3 on 4 hits.

4thThe Mariners score 10 runs in the 7th inning on their way to an 11-6 win over the Twins. OF Raul Ibanez has 6 RBIs in the frame on a grand slam and a 2-run single.

The Blue Jays defeat the Athletics, 6-1. Oakland P Sean Gallagher hits a batter with the bases loaded in 2 different innings, becoming the first ML pitcher in 26 years to do so.

The Rangers score 5 runs in 4+ innings against Yankee starter Joba Chamberlain, who leaves in the 5thwith a shoulder injury, then tack 4 more on in the bottom of the 9thwhen Marlon Byrd connects for a 2-out walkoff grand slam off Damaso Marte. Texas wins, 9-5. Chamberlain will not pitch for a month and this game will mark a decrease in his velocity. He will make no more starts this year.

5thOrioles rookie P Chris Waters allows only 1 hit in 8 innings in his ML debut as Baltimore tops the Angels, 3-0.

6thThe Rays score 6 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to defeat the Indians, 10-7. Jhonny Peralta gets 5 hits for Cleveland, including two doubles and a HR. It is the 2nd time this season he has had 5 hits and 3 or more extra base hits in a game. The last player to do so twice in a season was Vern Stephens of the Browns in 1942.

The Orioles defeat the Angels, 9-4. Baltimore’s Luis Montanez hits a HR in his first ML AB in the 3rd inning.

7thRoy Oswalt throws his glove on the field and the Astros down the Reds, 7-4. Oswalt becomes the first pitcher in ML history to win 21 of his first 22 decisions against a particular team. Hunter Pence helps with a three-run homer. Before the game, the Astros retire Craig Biggio’s number. He joins Mickey Mantle as the only major-leaguers to have their uniform number “7” retired.

9thAt Wrigley Field, the Cardinals mug Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano for 9 runs in 4+ innings, connecting for 10 hits, including four homers.  Troy Glaus connects twice off Zambrano as he totals 3 hits and 5 RBIs.  Albert Pujols also homers of Zambrano as the Cardinals win, 12-3. Zambrano has some measure of revenge as he hits a homer off winning hurler Todd Wellemeyer to run his hit streak while he’s pitching to 10 games. Only four pitches since 1956 have a hit streak of 10 or more (Peters, Walker, and Rhoden) while pitching. Babe Ruth had an 11-game hit streak while pitching, but in between had 4 pinch hitting appearances and played 1B and the outfield as well.

12thLots of records are set as the Red Sox score 10 runs in the 1st inning, lose the lead 16-14, before coming back with 4 runs in the 8thto record a 19-17 win over the Rangers. The two teams tie an AL record with 36 combined runs. In a dubious record, the Rangers are just the fourth team since 1900 to score 17 runs and lose. David Ortiz becomes the fifth player to hit two homers in the first inning and ties the AL record for most RBIs in one inning with six. Dustin Pedroia gets 5 hits and scores 5 runs for Boston, while Marlon Byrd gets 5 hits for Texas. Boston rookie P Charlie Zink becomes the 3rd pitcher in ML history whose team scores at least 10 runs for him in the 1st inning of his ML debut (The others were the Cardinals for Larry Jackson in 1955 and Boston (NL) for Bill Banks in 1895). Texas hurler Scott Feldman becomes the first pitcher since the Dead Ball era to allow 12 or more runs in a game, but not be charged with a loss (The Cards Gene Packard did it on August 3, 1918). His 39 innings to start a season ties a relief record of Al Benton, set in 1949 for Cleveland. Grover Cleveland Alexander hold the rookie record of 41 consecutive scoreless innings set in 1911.

The Cubs pound Tom Glavine for 7 runs in 4 innings and trounce the Braves, 11-7, as Atlanta’s Mark Kotsay goes 5-for-5 and hits for the cycle. Kotsay’s reward will come when he is shortly traded to the Red Sox. Glavine, who came off the DL yesterday, goes back on and this will be the final game. He has thrown a ML record 68,226 pitches in his 21-year career.

The White Sox down the Royals, 9-2. and tie a ML record by hitting 4 consecutive homers in the 6th inning. It is the 6th time the feat has been accomplished. Carlos Quentin gets hit by a pitch for the 6thgame in a row. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, no player has matched this going back to 1920. The win goes to Lance Broadway, his only decision this year.

Ultimate compliment. The Devil Rays, with a 7-3 lead over the Rangers in the bottom of the ninth and two out, walk major league RBI leader Josh Hamilton with the bases loaded. Reliever Dan Wheeler then fans Marlon Byrd to end the Rays’ 7-4 victory. Hamilton joins an exclusive fraternity of players walked with the sacks full: Del Bissonette, May 2, 1928; Bill Nicholson, July 23, 1944; and Barry Bonds, May 28, 1998.
