1st      The Pirates defeat the Nationals, 11-6, with the help of rookie OF Andrew McCutchen who hits 3 homers and drives in 6 runs for Pittsburgh. The last Buc to connect for three four-baggers in a game was Darnell Coles in 1987.

Commemorating the “Dog Days” promotion at AT&T Park, Giants ace Tim Lincecum brings his white French bulldog, Cy, to work with him. Cy stays in the clubhouse while Lincecum (12-3) pitches eight scoreless innings and defeats the Phillies, 2-0.

Angel Pagan hits a double and his first homer of hte year, a grand slam, to drive in 5 runs as the Mets down the visiting Diamondbacks, 9-6. New York won’t hit another grand slam until they hit two on June 28, 2011, 299 games.  In that span their pitchers will serve up 18 grand slams, a ML record.

The Blue Jays edge the Athletics, 6-5. Prior to the game, the A’s retire Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson’s No. 24.

The Red Sox top the Orioles, 4-0, as Josh Beckett wins his 13th. This is the latest 13-game winner in history (non strike year).

2ndThe Yankees defeat the White Sox, 8-5, as Melky Cabrera hits for the cycle. According to the New York Times, this is the 286th(sic) cycle in ML history.

Cody Ross’s 2ndhomer of the game gives the Marlins a 3-2 win over Cubs. Ross’s homer in the 9thfollows Dan Uggla’s game-tying homer, and both come off closer Kevin Gregg.  It is Gregg’s 2ndblown save in 2 days.

Kendry Morales drives in 6 runs on a pair of 3-run homers to pace the Angels to a 13-4 victory over Twins. Jered Weaver (11-3) fans 11 in 6+ innings for the win.  Leading the AL West, the Haloes have now won 13 out of 15.

Houston rookie Bud Norris debuts with 7 innings of two-hit ball as the Astros beat the Cardinals, 2-0. Adam Wainwright is the losing pitcher.

John Buck hits a leadoff single in 7thto break Tampa Bay’s James Shield’s no hit bid. The Royals score 2 in the frame, the second run on Alex Gordon’s steal of home. Two more runs in the 8thpins the 4-1 loss on Shield loses, 4-1.

The Red Sox get 23 hits and trounce the Orioles, 18-10. Newly acquired Victor Martinez gets 5 of those hits, including a double, and drives in 4 runs in his first game as a Red Sox. O’s starter Jason Berken (1-9) allows 9 of first 13 batters to reach base.

3rdThe Athletics score 3 runs in the bottom of the 9thto edge the Rangers, 3-2. Rajai Davis drives home 2 on a pinch triple. Neftali Feliz makes his ML debut for Texas and retires all 6 batters he faces, including the first four by strikeout. He is the first pitcher to strike out as many as 4 at the start of his career since Pete Richert fanned his first 6 batters for the Dodgers in 1962.

4thThe Mariners edge the Royals, 7-6. Ichiro Suzuki goes 2-for-5 for the 600thmultiple-hit game of his 9-year ML career. The 2nd-highest total over a 9-year span was Rogers Hornsby’s 581.

At Citi Field, Albert Pujols caps off a 4-hit performance with a 10thinning grand slam off Sean Green as the Cardinals top the Mets, 12-7. Pujols had a single, double and homer before his 10thinning salami.  It is his 5thgrand slam of the year, tieing the NL record.

At Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers beat up the Brewers, 17-4, as six players score 2 or more runs. Manny Ramirez homers as does Matt Kemp, who drives in 5 runs. With two outs in the 9th, Prince Fielder gets hit by a pitch from Guillermo Mota, who gets thumbed.  Mota’s HBP is a retaliation for two Dodgers getting plunked earlier.  Fielder is still hot about the incident after the and he goes to the Dodgers club house to confront Mota, but is denied entry by a guard. Both Mota and Fielder will be fined for their actions.

The long-awaited debut of Brian Matusz takes place and the Baby Bird does not disappoint, as he goes 5 innings allowing a run in Baltimore’s 8-2 win over Detroit. Cesar Izturis and Nick Markakis each have 3 hits and 3 RBIs.  Matusz is the fifth O’s pitcher to win his ML debut this year, joining Koji Uehara, Brad Bergessen, Jason Berken, David Hernandez.  Baltimore is the first team to have five pitchers win debuts since the White Stockings of 1888.  As rookie O’s catcher Matt Wieters observes, “That’s when they started baseball. Everyone was making debuts.”

5thAt Citi Field, the Mets shut out the Cardinals, 9-0. Nelson Figueroa, with 4+ innings of relief, is the winner. Angel Pagan hits a single, triple and grand slam to pace New York.

At PNC Park, Albert Pujols poles a 10thinning pinch homer to power the Cardinals to a 2-1 win over the Pirates, The homer comes off Matt Capp, in relief of Roy Ohlendorff, and is the slugger’s second 10thin homer in 2 days. In the 4thinning, Ohlendorff joins A.J. Burnett of the Yankees as the only pitcher this year to K the side on 9 pitches.

6thAt Minute Maid Park, Giants backup catcher Eli Whiteside hits his first career homer, a grand slam against the Astros, as the Giants are victorious, 10-6. Whiteside is the fourth Giant player to hit a slam for his first round-tripper in the bigs.

At PNC Park, the Giants score 5 runs against Steven Jackson in the 12thto beat the Pirates, 11-6.

At Fenway, the New York Yankees cuff pitchers John Smoltz (8 runs in 3+ innings) and Billy Traber (5 runs in 3+ innings) to win, 13-6. This will be their last appearances for Boston as Boston will release the two. Joba Chamberlain (8-2) is the victor, supported by an 18-hit attack. Mark Teixeira has 2 doubles and a homer, while Big Papi is 0-for-5 with 9 left on base.

The Yankees obtain the well-traveled pitcher Chad Gaudin from the Padres for cash. He’ll go 2-0 in New York.

7thThe Yankees beat the Red Sox, 2-0, on Alex Rodriguez’s 2-run homer in the 15thinning off Junichi Tazawa. It is only the 4thtime in ML history that a walk-off HR in the 15thinning or later has broken a scoreless tie.

The Indians top the White Sox, 6-2, despite the Sox turning an AL record-tying 6 double plays on the ground but make they commit 3 errors, giving them an AL high 87. “Our defense is really bad,” observes Ozzie Guillen. Mark Buerhle takes the loss, serving up two homers to Kelly Shoppach. Buerhle has allowed 17 earned runs, 27 hits in 12 1/3 innings since his record for consecutive batters retired ended with 2 outs in the 6thinning on July 20.

The Padres whip the Mets, 6-2, when Everth Cabrera cranks a walkoff grand slam in the 9thoff Francisco Rodriguez. It Cabrera’s 2ndand last homer this year. Rodriguez retires no batters while giving up 5 runs.

Ryan Church has a single, double and a 12thinning 3-run homer to lead the Braves to a 9-5 win at Dodger Stadium. Manager Bobby Cox is not around to see the end as he gets tossed in the 5thinning.  Casey Blake has 3 hits for the Dodgers, including a 3-run homer.

Fifteen minutes before the beginning of the game, Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano walks off the field forcing Sean Marshall to fill in against the Rockies. “He hadn’t complained about anything,” says Lou Piniella of Zambrano. The Cubs, tied for first, will lose 6 of their next 7.

The Twins obtain P Carl Pavano from the Indians for a player to be named. Knuckleballer A.J. Dickey is dropped to make room for Pavano.

The Orioles send C Gregg Zaun to the Rays for cash or a player to be named.

8thThe Twins shut out the Tigers, 11-0. Denard Span goes 5-for-5, including a double, for Minnesota. He becomes the only player this year to have 5 or more hits in two different games. He went 5-for-8 in a 16-inning game on July 3.

The Rangers release pitcher Vincente Padilla three days (Retrosheet has August 17) after he was caught on TV mocking and laughing at umpire Bob Davidson who warned the Texas and Oakland benches about pitchers throwing at batters.  Padilla hit Kurt Suzuki in the 1stinning and Chad Reineke retaliated by hitting Michael Young.  Summing up the sentiment in the Rangers clubhouse, Marlon Byrd said, “Good riddance.” Padilla (8-6) will sign with the Dodgers and go 4-0 the rest of the year.

9thThe Braves defeat the Dodgers, 8-2, with Javier Vazquez getting the win for Atlanta. Vazquez becomes the tenth pitcher in ML history to have 10 straight seasons with 10 wins and 150 strikeouts. Eight of the others are Hall of Famers.

The Yankees beat the Red Sox, 5-2, at Yankee Stadium as Johnny Damon and Mark Teixeira hit back-to-back homers in the 8thinning, off Daniel Bard. It is an AL-record 6thtime they’ve gone back-to-back this year.

I can see you. Florida downs the host Phillies, 12-3, collecting 19 hits. Hanley Ramirez and Chris Coghlan, on his way to Rookie of the Year honors, each have 4 hits. In the 6thinning, the Phillies are upset about a called third strike on Ryan Howard and, while standing in the deep centerfield, Shane Victorino is ejected by home plate umpire Ed Rapuano. Victorino makes a gesture, is warned, and repeats it in case Rapuano might’ve missed it.

The Brewers acquire P David Weathers from the Reds for a player to be named.

10thThe Rockies rout the Cubs, 11-5. Troy Tulowitzki hits for the cycle while going 5-for-5 for Colorado and driving in 7 runs.

The Athletics clobber the Orioles, 9-1. Mark Ellis goes 5-for-5, including a double, for Oakland.

The White Sox claim Alex Rios from the Blue Jays, who waived the high-priced but under-performing outfielder. He’ll hit .199 in Chicago.

11thThe Diamondbacks defeat the Mets, 6-2. Rookie OF Trent Oeltjen gets 4 hits for Arizona, giving him 12 in his first 5 ML games. He matches the highest hit total over a player’s first 5 games since 1961.

The Padres total 22 hits as they outslug the Brewers, 13-6. Adrian Gonzalez goes 6-for-6, including a double, for San Diego.

12thPedro Martinez makes his first start for the Phillies, going 5 innings and giving up 3 runs as the Phils trounce the Cubs, 12-5. The Quakers make it easy for Pedro, scoring twice in the 1stand 3rdand plating 8 runs in the 4th. Raul Ibanez has a 3-run homer in the 4th.

      Adrian Beltre has his fourth multi-hit game in a row and scores the only run in the 14thas Seattle beats the visiting White Sox, 1-0. Beltre stays in the game after making an error on a ball that hits him in the crotch, but he will be out of action until the second week in September with a swollen testicle.  He will wear a cup for a while before returning to his cupless ways.  Mark Buerhle and Felix Hernandez pitch 8 and 7 scoreless innings, respectively.

13thWelcome to the Bigs. San Diego’s Cesar Carillo’s debut is a rocky one as he gives up 3 homers and 8 runs in 2+ innings as the Brewers beat the Padres, 12-9. Kevin Kouzmanoff goes 5-for-5, including a double, for the Pads, while Mike Rivera and Prince Fielder each have two homers for Milwaukee. Rivera drives home 5.

Joe Mauer drives in 4 runs on a double and homer, but that’s all his Twins can muster as they lose 5-4 to the Royals. Orlando Cabrera has a single to extend his consecutive game-hitting streak to 22 games. In his second start for the Twins, Carl Pavano takes the loss.

The Reds shut out the Nationals, 7-0, on Bronson Arroyo’s 2-hitter. OF Jonny Gomes hits 3 homers for Cincinnati, becoming just the 14thplayer in ML history to hit 3 or more roundtrippers in a game for teams in both the AL and NL. He previously hit 3 for Tampa Bay against the Royals in 2005.

14thThe Cubs score 10 runs in the 2ndinning on their way to a 17-2 rout of the Pirates. For the second time this year, Derrek Lee has 7 RBIs for Chicago, joining Rogers Hornsby as the only Cub to record two seven-RBI games in the same season; Hornsby registered his on April 24 and June 30 in 1931.

The Orioles trounce the Angels, 16-6, as Felix Pie hits for the cycle for Baltimore and drives in 4 runs. Brian Roberts has 4 hits, including 3 doubles. Pie’s cycle is the seventh hit in the majors this season, the most in any one season since 1933 when eight were hit.

The Red Sox obtain SS Alex Gonzalez from the Reds for minor league IF Kris Negron.

15thThe White Sox rout the Athletics, 8-1, despite 5 hits, including a double, by Oakland’s Adam Kennedy.

The Giants edge the Mets, 5-4, when Bengie Molina collects his third hit of the game, a 10thinning walkoff homer against Francisco Rodriguez. It is the second walkoff homer that Rodgriguez has served up in 8 days.

Led by Julio Borbon, who has 4 hits and 4 steals, and Elvis Andrus, with 3 hits and 3 steals, the Rangers steal a club record 8 bases as they beat the Red Sox, 7-2. They’ll steal 9 against the Sox next year, all with Tim Wakefield on the mound.

16thDodger starter Randy Wolf is the latest pitcher to hit a homer and strike out 10 or more batters in the same game as he goes 7.2 innings against Arizona. Los Angeles wins, 9-3.  Wolf has 3 hits and 3 RBIs, and is help by Andre Ethier, who has 4 hits, including a homer, and 4 RBIs.

The Mariners beat the Yankees, 10-3, despite 3 hits from Derek Jeter. Jeter becomes the all-time leader for hits by a SS with 2,675, passing former record-holder Luis Aparicio.

The Angels plate 9 runs in the 13thinning to defeat the Orioles, 17-8. It is only the 4thtime in ML history that a game of 13 or more innings is decided by a margin of 9 or more runs. The 9 runs in the 13thties an AL mark.

17thThe last-place Baltimore Orioles trade veteran Aubrey Huff to the first-place Detroit Tigers for Brett Jacobson. Alas, Huff, who has never been to the playoffs, will not see it this year either.

The Red Sox release veteran John Smoltz, who will sign with the Cardinals in two days.

18thDelmon Young has 4 RBIs and Joey Mauer has a pair of homers and drives in 3 as the visiting Twins defeat the Rangers, 9-6. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Mauer joins Babe Ruth (1931), Lou Gehrig (1930 and 1936), Joe DiMaggio (1939) and Ted Williams (1941 and 1957) as the only big-leaguers to bat .380 and have 25 homers this late in a season.

In today’s 5-4 win over Cleveland, the starting nine of the Angels are the first team since the 1930 to start a game with each player in the starting lineup batting over .300 after at least 100 games.

The Rangers acquire C Ivan Rodriguez from the Astros for minor league P Matt Nevarez and 2 players to be named.

19thThe Brewers send 3B Bill Hall to the Mariners for minor league P Ruben Flores.

20thThe Reds edge the Giants, 2-1, in 10 innings on rookie Drew Stubbs’ walkoff HR off pitcher Bob Howry. It is the 3rdwalkoff homer by a rookie that Howry has allowed in the past 50 days. No other pitcher in ML history has allowed 3 game-ending homers in his career. Adam Harang allows one run in 7 innings for the Reds, but will miss the rest of the season when he undergoes an emergency appendectomy.

The Astros defeat the Marlins, 4-1. Florida’s run of consecutive games with 10 or more hits ends at 15, the longest in the ML since 1936.

21stIn a barnburner at Fenway, the Yankees pound out 23 hits to down the Red Sox, 20-11. Melky Cabrera and Alex Rodriguez each have 4 of the hits, while Hideki Matsui has two 3-run homers and drives in 7 runs, Brad Penny gives up 8 runs in 4 innings to ensure that this is his last appearance in Boston, while winning pitcher Andy Pettitte allows 7 runs in 5 innings. Jacoby Ellsbury swipes his 54thstolen base to tie the Red Sox record.

23rdThe Phillies beat the Mets, 9-7. The game ends on an unassisted triple play by Philadelphia SS Eric Bruntlett. It is the 15thunassisted TP in ML history, and only the second to end a game.

Welcome back to the National League. John Smoltz tosses 5 scoreless innings in his first start for the Cardinals. Smoltz strikes out 9 batters, including 7 in a row, in the 5-2 win over the Padres. He also has a hit a scores a run.

The Twins defeat the Royals, 10-3, as Michael Cuddyer hits a pair of homers in Minnesota’s 8-run 7thinning. He is the first Twin to accomplish the feat.

The Yankees take the rubber game from the Red Sox, winning 8-4 behind C.C. Sabbathia (15-7). Josh Beckett gives up all 8 runs and serves up 5 homers, 2 to Hideki Matsui. It is Matsui’s second 2-homer game in the series.

24thAfter the Giants score 3 runs in the top of the 14thon 2 triples and 3 walks, the Rockies’ Ryan Spilborghs clips Merkin Valdez for a walk off grand slam as Colordo beats San Francisco, 6-4. The 8 runs in the 14thties the NL record for most runs by both teams in the 14th. It was last done by the Giants and Pirates on June 15, 1929.

25thHere for my bat, skip. At Wrigley, the Nationals club the Cubs, 15-6, scoring 8 runs off Carlos Zambrano in 4+ innings. Zambrano, who homers in the 3rd, loads the bases in the 5thbefore Aaron Heilman relieves and serves up a grand slam to Elijah Dukes. Josh Willingham gets in on the action with two homers and 6 RBIs, scoring 5 times.

At Kansas City, the Royals young ace Zach Greinke strikes out 15 in 8 innings as Kansas City subdues the Indians, 6-2. The 15 K’s is a new Royals team record.

28thVeteran Ryan Freel, who started the season in the Cubs system, went to the Royals and was released earlier this month, signs with the Texas Rangers.  They’ll release him in 3 days.

The Twins acquire P Jon Rauch from the Diamondbacks for a player to be named.

The Rays send P Scott Kazmir to the Angels in exchange for minor leaguers P Alex Torres and 3B Matt Sweeney, and a player to be named.

The Cubs beat the Mets, 5-2. Pitcher Pat Misch takes the loss, tying the ML record for consecutive starts to begin a career in which the pitcher’s team lost every game. Misch’s club has lost all 12 of his career starts. John Cummings set the mark with the Mariners in 1993 and 1994.

The Angels score 7 runs in the 7thinning to come from behind and defeat the Athletics, 11-7. Kendry Morales has 5 hits, including four for extra bases—2 doubles and 2 homers.

The Diamondbacks rout the Astros, 14-7. Arizona’s Jon Hester hits a HR in his first ML AB with a 2-run pinch hit in the 6thinning.

29thJon Garland tosses 7 innings as the Diamondbacks roll by the Astros, 9-0. Mark Reynolds cracks his 40thhomer for the D’Backs, and Justin Upton hits his 21st. Reynolds will soon record his 200thstrikeout for the second year in a row, the first major leaguer to do that.

The Red Sox obtain OF Joey Gathright from the Orioles for future considerations. Baltimore acquired Gathright from the Cubs in May, but he never played for the O’s.

The Yankees shut out the White Sox, 10-0, as Sergio Mitre and Chad Gaudin combine on a 1-hitter. Jim Thome’s 5th-inning double is Chicago’s only safety.

30thThe Royals down the Mariners, 3-0, on Zack Greinke’s 1-hitter. Seattle’s only hit is a 2nd-inning single by Kenji Johjima. The M’s Ryan Roland-Smith does a solid job, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs in 8 innings.

At Great American Ball Park, the Dodgers edge the Reds, 3-2, in 12 innings, as Dodgers hurlers strike out 20 Reds, the first NL staff to reach 20 this season.  Matt Kemp has a 5thinning homer and a sac fly in the 12thto provide the margin. Kemp, with 10, is just the fourth major-leaguer since 1952 to have 10 or more extra-inning RBIs in a season; he joins Juan Gonzalez (11 in 1991), Jim Presley (10 in 1986) and Tim Wallach (11 in 1982).

Shortstop Edgar Renteria of the Giants has 3 hits and 5 RBIs to pace San Francisco to a 9-5 win over the Rockies. His grand slam off Rafael Betancourt is the second he has hit off the reliever; he connected in 2008. No player has hit three slams off the same pitcher. The Rockies and Giants are now both 6 games in back of the leading Dodgers in the NL West.

The Dodgers get IF Ronnie Belliard from the Nationals for minor league P Luis Garcia and a player to be named.

31stThe Blue Jays defeat the Rangers, 18-10. Adam Lind hits 2 HRs and drives in 8 runs for Toronto.
