1stAdam Wainright wins his 15thas the Cardinals pummel the Pirates, 9-1. Matt Holliday hits his 20thand Albert Pujols hits his 25th. However, Pujols’ batting average is now .298, the first time since 2002 that he had hit below .300 in the month of August. LaRussa is not worried.

2ndThe Brewers pound out 26 hits on their way to an 18-1 thrashing of the Cubs. Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder each go 5-for-7 in the game, including a double by Fielder who also drives in 5 runs. It is the most hits given up by the Cubs since 1957. Braun and Fielder match teammates Al Zarilla and Johnny Pesky (1950 Red Sox) and Don Johnson and Phil Cavarretta (1945 Cubs) as the only pairs of teammates since 1920 to each have at least five hits in seven at bats in a nine-inning game. The Brewers join the 1922 Giants, 1930 Cubs and 1936 Cubs as the only N.L. teams since 1920 to score 17 or more runs in a game four or more times in a season; the 1930 Cubs hold the record having scored 17 or more six times.

The Reds shut out the Pirates, 4-0. Travis Wood hurls 7 scoreless innings, followed by one each for Russ Springer and Arthur Rhodes. It is the first game in ML history in which a rookie starting pitcher and two 40-something relievers combine on a shutout (according to the Elias Sports Bureau).

The Cubs call up Casey Coleman who follows in the footsteps of his father and grandfather to make the Colemans the first family to have three generations of ML pitchers. Granddad Joe pitched from 1942-55 and father Joe from 1965-79. The other three-generation big-league families are the Bells (Gus, Buddy, Mike and David), the Boones (Ray, Bob, Bret and Aaron) and the Hairstons (Sam, Jerry, John, Jerry, Jr., and Scott). His debut is inauspicious as he gives up 6 runs in 2+ innings as the Brewers deck the Cubs, 18-1. Cecil Fielder has 5 hits and 5 RBIs and Casey McGehee has a homer and 4 RBIs. Yovani Gallardo (10-5) is the winning pitcher.

At Fenway, Shelley Duncan has 4 hits as the Indians are victorious over the Red Sox, 6-5. Tim Wakefield pitches 2 scoreless innings for Boston to celebrate his 44thbirthday.

3rd  Alexei Ramirez has 4 hits and Juan Pierre has a double and homer to lead the White Sox to a 12-2 victory in the first of two games against the Tigers. Pierre’s four-bagger ends a homer drought of 905 plate appearances, dating back to 2008. Detroit rebounds in the nightcap, winning, 7-1.

At Busch Stadium, the Astros spot the Cardinals a run, then lay on 22 hits to clip the Birds, 18-4. Houston is led by rookie SS Angel Sanchez who has 4 hits and 6 RBIs. Only Travis Jackson (1922) and J.J. Hardy (2005) as rookie shortstops since 1920 posted at least 4 hits and 6 RBIs in a game.

4thThe Yankees defeat the Blue Jays, 5-1, as Alex Rodriguez hits his 600thcareer HR, off Shaun Marcum. He becomes the 7th—and youngest—player to reach the milestone. The ball is caught by a Yankee security guard, Frankie Babilonia, who was near the netting at monument park.

Michael Young hits a grand slam and David Murphy adds a 3-run homer as the Texas Rangers outshoot the Mariners, 11-6, at Safeco. Ichiro Suzuki steals 4 bases for the M’s.

The Mariners trade five-time All-star Mike Sweeney to the Phillies for a player to be named or cash considerations.

Edwin Jsckson, acquired by the White Sox on July 30th, wins his first game for Chicago by allowing one run in 7 innings. He also shows his fielding dexterity when he records an assist on a 3rdstrike that bounces off the glove of catcher A.J. Pierszynski. He throws out Don Kelly at 1stas the Sox beat Detroit, 4-1.

5thIn St. Petersburg, the Twins Jason Kubel hits a pop-up that clanks off a catwalk and drops between two fielders near the pitcher’s mound for a single. The hit scores the winning run as the Twins plate two in the 9thfor an 8-6 win. The Rays score all their runs in the eighth, 5 on a BJ Upton homer and a grand slam by pinch hitter Jason Bartlett. After the game, Rays manager Joe Maddon said, “To lose a game in a pennant situation like that because of a roof really indicates why there is a crying need for a new ballpark in this area. There was a time when it was cute. It was not cute today.” Today’s pop-up will lead to changes in the rules at Tropicana Park by the division series.

6thBefore the start of today’s game at Turner Field, the Braves retire the uniform of former ace Tom Glavine, He is the seventh Brave to have his uniform number retired joining Henry Aaron (44), Warren Spahn (21), Eddie Mathews (41), Dale Murphy (3), Greg Maddux (31) and Phil Niekro (35); Glavine’s number was 47.  The Giants then edge the Braves, 3-2, in 11 innings, using three walks and a sac fly to plate the winner. The Braves remain a game ahead in the NL East, while the Giants are a game off the pace in the NL West.

Before the start of today’s game at Camden Yards, Baltimore presents Jim Gentile, 76, with a belated $5,000 check for leading the AL in RBIs in 1961.  For years, Roger Maris had been credited with leading the AL in 1961 with 142 RBIs, but work by SABR discovered that Maris was erroneously credited with knocking in a run in July 5 game; the run had scored on an error. With the change, Maris and Gentile tied for the RBI lead with 141. The Orioles then beat the White Sox, 2-1, in 10 innings.

At Dodger Stadium, Adam Dunn belts 2 homers and drives in all the runs for Washington as the Nationals double the Dodgers, 6-3. John Lannan allows 3 runs in 6 innings in the win.

7thThe Blue Jays crush 8 homers as they beat the Rays, 17-11.  Coming off an MVP-PCL season, J.P Arencibia hits a HR in his first ML at bat and on his first ML pitch,  and adds another homer along with a single and double before fouling out. Arencibia becomes just the 2ndplayer in ML history to have 4 hits and 2 homers in his first game. The other player to do so was Charlie Reilly for Columbus of the American Association in 1889. Things will go downhill for J.P. as he will go 1-for-31 from here.

Hours after he gets the word that his playing time will be limited, Jeff Francoeur hits a homer off Cole Hamels and the Mets beat the Phils, 1-0. Johan Santana struggles through 7+ innings for the win. Santana allows no hits into the 6th.

Rookie Pedro Alvarez hits a 2-out, 3-run walkoff homer in 10thto give the Pirates an 8-7 win over the visiting Rockies.

8thBrandon Morrow loses a no-hitter with 2 outs in the 9thinning as Evan Longoria singles for Tampa Bay’s only hit in the Blue Jays 1-0 win over the Rays. Morrow strikes out 17 batters in the 1-hitter.

9thThe Mariners fire manager Don Wakamatsu. Triple-A manager Daren Brown takes over the position on an interim basis. Seattle goes on to win its first game under Brown, defeating the Athletics, 3-1. The Mariners turn a triple play in the contest, marking the first time in ML history that a team turns a TP under a manager making his ML debut.

The Astros rout the Braves, 10-4, breaking a tie with a 6-run 7th. The Braves could have taken a 3-0 lead in the 3rdbut pitcher Mike Minor is thrown out 9-3 at 1B on an apparent RBI single. Jason Heyward celebrates his 21stbirthday with a HR for Atlanta, just the 6thplayer since 1900 to homer on their birthday at age 21 or younger. Buddy Lewis and Aramis Ramirez did so on their 20thbirthday, while Ted Williams, Frank Robinson and Alex Rodriguez did so on their 21st.

At Yankee Stadium, the Red Sox edge the Yankees, 2-1, as Jon Lester and Phil Hughes each go 6 innings.  Jacoby Ellsbury steals 4 bases for Boston.

The Reds obtain veteran outfielder Jim Edmonds from the Brewers in exchange for OF Chris Dickerson.

10thThe Rays defeat the Tigers, 8-0, behind rookie P Jeremy Hellickson. Hellickson becomes just the sixth pitcher since 1900 to throw at least 7 innings and allow 3 or fewer hits in each of his first two ML starts. Others to accomplish the feat were George Dumont, Lew Krausse, Jr., Mike Norris, Robert Person, and Brandon Webb.

The Orioles beat the Indians, 14-8. Buck Showalter becomes the first manager in ML history to win at least 7 of his first 8 games after taking over a team in midseason that is at least 20 games under .500. They will go 21-14 in the first 35 games under Buck.

11thThe Diamondbacks tie an ML record by hitting 4 consecutive HRs in the 4thinning of their 8-2 win over the Brewers. Adam LaRoche, Miguel Montero, Mark Reynolds and Stephen Drew connect with one out in the inning. The Diamondbacks are the 7thteam to connect for four homers in a row.

The visiting Braves stay atop the NL East with a 10-inning, 8-2, win over the Astros. Omar Infante drives in the go-ahead run and Brian McCann adds a grand slam in the 10thinning. In relief, Billy Wagner (6-2) allows 2 of the 4 Astros hits for the win.

The Marlins defeat the Nationals, 9-5, as Florida rookie Mike Stanton gets 5 hits, including a pair of doubles and a HR, and drives home 4 runs.

The Giants stay 2 1/2 games in back of San Diego by beating the visiting Cubs, 5-4, when Pat Burrell hits a homer in the 8thinning off Justin Berg. Before the game, they acquire Mike Fontenot from Chicago, two days after putting Edgar Renteria on the DL. The Cubs receive OF prospect Evan Crawford. Carlos Zambrano makes an appearance for Chicago, but as a pinch hitter.

You still want this guy? Down 6-1 against Cliff Lee, the Yankees score in each of the last 4 innings to beat the Rangers, 7-6. Marcus Thames has a homer and drives in the winning run. The AL-leading Yanks strike out 17 times, tying a franchise mark set on September 10, 1999.

At Citi Field, Melvin Mora hits an 8th-inning grand slam as the Rockies down the Mets, 6-2.  David Wright strikes out 4 times for the slumping Mets, the second time this season he’s worn the Golden Sombrero. Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez, who did not play in the game, is arrested after he assaults the father of his girl friend in the family lounge in front of members of players’ families. Rodriguez sustains a torn thumb ligament in his punching hand that will end his season. Authorities issue a restraining order against Rodriguez Thursday for his girlfriend and her father, Carlos Peña.

Behind Homer Bailey’s 6 shutout innings, the Reds down the visiting Marlins, 2-0. Reds shortstop Orlando Cabrera, sidelined since the beginning of August with an oblique strain, serves as one of the team’s batboys.

12thThe Brewers down the Diamondbacks, 8-4. Casey McGehee goes 4-for-4 for Milwaukee, giving him a franchise record 9 straight hits.

13thThe Giants obtain OF Jose Guillen from the Royals for a player to be named and cash considerations.

The Mets defeat the Phillies, 1-0, on R.A. Dickey’s one-hit shutout. Opposing P Cole Hamels gets Philadelphia’s only hit. It is New York’s 4thconsecutive shutout over the Phillies at Citi Field.

14thThe Yankees beat the Royals, 8-3, as Alex Rodriguez slugs 3 homers.

Carlos Zambrano (4-6) makes his return to the mound a success as the Cubs edge the Cardinals, 3-2. The Z man will go undefeated the rest of the year, winning 8 games including today and finishing 11-6.

Houston’s Bud Norris (5-7) pitches 7 innings, allowing a 2-run homer to Garrett Jones, but striking out 14 as the Astros beat Pittsburgh, 3-2.

15thThe Twins edge the Athletics, 4-2. Minnesota P Kevin Slowey hurls 7 hitless innings before being removed. He left his left start with elbow tendonitis and manager Ron Gardenhire takes no chance. Slowey is the first pitcher to be removed from a game in the 8thinning or later with a no-hitter intact and his team in the lead since 1996.

The Rays top the Orioles, 3-2. Rookie P Jeremy Hellickson becomes the first pitcher in modern ML history to hurl at least 6 innings and allow no more than 3 hits in each of his first 3 games in the ML.

Former number one draft pick Bryan Bullington allows just two hits in 8 innings as the Royals edge the Yankees, 1-0. This is Bullington’s lone ML victory as he will finish his career this year at 1-9.

The Padres move to 3.5 games in front in the NL West with an 8-2 win over the San Francisco. Tim Lincecum is the loser and has now lost 3 straight starts for the first time in his career.

Travis Hafner comes off the DL list to hit a grand slam and Michael Brantley drives in 3 runs as the Indians score 7 in the 7thto beat the Mariners, 9-1.

Before the start of today’s game the Cardinals option reliever Fernando Salas to Class AAA Memphis to create roster room for starting pitcher Kyle Lohse, who was activated before the game following a three-month stay on the disabled list. The Cubs waste no time in welcoming Lohse back, scoring 7 runs in 3 innings off him. Derrek Lee has a pair of homers off Lohse as the Cubs win, 9-7. Albert Pujols blasts his 30thhomer to straightaway CF and is the first player to hit 30 homers in each of his first ten seasons.

17thThe Twins edge the White Sox, 7-6, in 10 innings on Jim Thome’s walk-off HR. It is the 12thwalk-off homer of his career tying the ML record shared by Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Mantle, Stan Musial, Frank Robinson and Babe Ruth.

Behind Clay Buchholtz’s 7 shutout innings, the Red Sox defeat the Angels, 6-0. Ryan Kalish smacks a grand slam and Darnell McDonald hits a solo shot. McDonald’s homer clears the Green Monster and goes through the windshield of a car parked in garage across the street on Lansdowne Avenue.

18thNeeding a potent bat in the lineup after losing Chipper Jones to an ACL tear 8 days ago, the Braves obtain 1B Derrek Lee from the Cubs in exchange for minor leaguer pitchers Robinson Lopez, Tyrelle Harris and Jeffrey Lorick. The Los Angeles Angels proposed a trade to the Cubs for Lee, according to a major league source, and Hendry approached Lee on July 21, when he was ready to make a trade. But Lee turned down the deal. He then told the team he wanted to play out the last year of his Cubs contract, but changed his mind.

The Yankees defeat the Tigers, 9-5. Kerry Wood records his 1,500thcareer strikeout. He does so in his 1,303rdinning of work, becoming the fastest P in ML history to reach the mark. Pedro Martinez had held the record previously, reaching 1,500 Ks in 1,337 innings.

19thThe White Sox crush the Twins, 11-0. Paul Konerko gets 5 of Chicago’s 21 hits, including a double and HR. Twins pitcher Carl Pavano allows 15 hits and Mark Buerhle allows 5 hits in 7 innings of work.

The Cardinals obtain 3B Pedro Feliz from the Astros for minor league P David Carpenter.

20thThe Mets defeat the Pirates, 7-2. The loss assures Pittsburgh of its 18thconsecutive losing season, extending their own North American pro sports record.

At Fenway, the Blue Jays batter Jon Lester (13-8) for 9 runs in 2 innings and score at least a run against each of the next four Boston pitchers to win 16-2. Toronto totals 20 hits to back Brett Cecil’s 10thwin.  Lyle Overbay has 4 hits, including two 3-run homers off Lester, and drives in 7 runs. John Buck has 4 hits and 4 runs and John McDonald has a 3-run homer.

21stThe Brewers edge the Padres, 6-5. SD’s Matt Stairs hits the 21stpinch HR of his career to break the record he previously shared with Cliff Johnson. His 21 pinch dingers have come off 19 different pitchers with Huston Street and Matt Capps the only hurlers against whom he has two.

The White Sox and Royals split a pair of extra-inning contests with the Royals taking game 1 in 11 innings, 6-5 and the Sox returning the favor, 7-6, in 10 frames. Yunieski Betancourt hits his third grand slam of the season in game 1, then records the game-winning RBI in the 10th.  He is the first player to hit a tying/go ahead grand slam in the 7thor later, then drive in the winning run in extra innings.

Ichiro Suzuki hits a pair of homers, including one leading off, and scores 3 runs but his Mariners fall to the Yankees, 9-5. Casey Kotchman has 3 hits and makes an error ending his record streak of 274 consecutive errorless games at first base; he fielded 2,379 straight chances without a miscue since making 2 errors on June 20, 2008. It’ll be Casey’s only error of the year.

22ndThe Cubs lose to the Braves, 16-5. Following the game, Chicago manager Lou Piniella announces his retirement, effective immediately to tend to his ailing mother. Piniella finishes eighth in the majors on the all-time ejection list with 76 during his 18-year playing and 23-year managerial careers. Third base coach Mike Quade takes over as interim skipper.

The Mets send C Rod Barajas to the Dodgers for cash.

23rdThe Blue Jays edge the Yankees, 3-2. Jose Bautista, who hit only 13 HRs last years, hits his 39thand 40thof the season. That sets an ML record for the earliest calendar date for a player to hit his 40thHR after hitting fewer than 20 the previous year.

The Cubs crush the Nationals, 9-1. P Casey Coleman earns his first ML win and collect his first career hit to help Mike Quade win his first game as Chicago manager. The only other game in the past 85 years in which a pitcher recorded both his first career win and hit, while his manager got his first career win was on April 14, 1961, when P Joe McClain and manager Mickey Vernon of the Senators turned the trick against Cleveland.

The Rangers one-hit the Twins, 4-0, behind Rich Harden, Matt Harrison, Darren O’Day, and Neftali Feliz. Minnesota’s only hit is Joe Mauer’s one-out single in the 9thinning off Feliz.

Ross Ohlendorf gives up 2 runs before leaving in the 1stinning with a season-ending injured right shoulder in Pittsburgh’s 10-2 loss to the Cardinals. Ohlendorf finishes with a record of 1-11, and a 4.07 ERA. According to Pittsburgh Post Gazette, the last pitcher with so few wins and a low ERA was Anthony Young, pitching for the Mets in 1993.

In Tampa Bay’s 4-3 win over the Angels, Rafael Soriano becomes the 13th reliever and 41st pitcher in big-league history to strike out the side on nine pitches. With the win, the Rays move into a tie for first in the AL East.

24thThe Astros beat the host Phillies, 4-2, in 16 innings.  Ryan Howard is tossed in the 14thfor protesting a 3rdstrike call, a checked swing. The same thing happened on the second strike. Supporting Howard is teammate Ross Gload, who gets thumbed because he is on the DL.  Raul Ibanez plays the last 2 innings at 1B, while pitcher Roy Oswalt takes over in LF for two innings and grounds out for the last out of the game.

25thThe Mariners defeat the Red Sox, 4-2. At age 24, Felix Hernandez becomes the 4th-youngest P to reach 1,000 strikeouts for his career. Bob Feller, Bert Blyleven and Dwight Gooden did so at a younger age.

In a barn burner at AT&T Park, the Reds edge the Giants, 12-11, in 12 innings.  Joey Votto has 4 hits, including a pair of homers, for the Reds. Juan Uribe has a 3-run homer in the Giants 6-run 8th.

Every starter for the Braves records an extra base hit and Atlanta jumps to a 10-1 lead after 3 innings at Coors Field.  But the Rockies rally to win, 12-10, behind 14 hits and the shutout efforts of 3 relievers.

26thThe Nationals edge the Cardinals, 11-10, in 13 innings. Despite receiving 3 intentional walks, Albert Pujols hits his 400thcareer HR, becoming the 3rd-youngest player to reach the mark. Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr. reached it sooner. Ian Desmond has 4 hits and 3 RBIs for the Nats.

27thThe Phillies edge the Padres, 3-2. SD P Mat pitcher allows one run. Over his last 20 games, he has allowed 3 or more runs only once. Only 2 other pitchers in ML history have allowed no more than 2 runs 19 times in 20 starts. Greg Maddux and Roger Clemens accomplished the feat, but Latos is the only one to do so within the course of a single season. Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard strikes out for the 1,000thtime in his career in his 843rdML game. The only player to reach the 1,000-K plateau in fewer games was Rob Deer who did so in 828 contests.

The Reds defeat the Cubs, 7-1, as Jay Bruce hits 3 HRs for Cincinnati.

The Twins acquire P Brian Fuentes from the Angels for a player to be named. It will turn out to be 7’1″ Dutch right-hander Ludovicus Jacobus Maria Van Mil; he goes by the nickname of “Loek.”

Washington’s bluechip rookie Stephan Strasburg undergoes Tommy John surgery and is out for the 2011 season.

28thAdam Dunn has a homer and 5 RBIs as the Nationals club the visiting Cardinals, 14-5. Washington scores 6 in the 8thand might have scored more. Willie Harris cracks an apparent 3-run double but Nyjer Morgan, the runner on 1B, misses home plate when he tries to knock down catcher Bryan Anderson. Ivan Rodriguez, the previous runner, pushes Morgan towards home, violating the rules and causing Morgan to be called out.

29thReplay wins game. Against the Marlins, Braves C Brian McCann hits a 9thinning fly ball to RF that hits the second wall and caroms back into play.  McCann is initially awarded a double but after the umpires huddle and review the replay, he is awarded a homer, giving the Braves a 7-6 victory. It is the first time a game-ending homer has been reviewed. Matt Diaz’s pinch 2-run homer in the 9thhad tied it an out before McCann’s homer.

30thThe White Sox beat the Indians, 10-6, in 11 innings. Alex Rios gets 5 hits for Chicago, including a double and HR.

Baserunning 101 in Cincinnati.  In the Reds 5-4 win over the Milwaukee, some unusual baserunning occurs. In the 2ndinning, the Brews Lorenzo Cain is doubled off 1B on a line drive to the pitcher. In the 3rd, Ryan Braun steals 2B and then is picked off. Jay Bruce tries to go from 1B to 2B on a fly ball and is gunned down. In the 4th, Drew Stubbs tries to go from 1B to 3B on a single and is thrown out. In the 5th, Chris Valaika tries to score from 3B on a grounder and is thrown out. On the plus side, Brewers pitcher Randy Wolf steals 2B, the first pitcher in franchise history to steal. “So does this mean I’m going to have a bobblehead?” he quips.

31stThe Blue Jays score 10 runs in the 6thinning on their way to a 13-5 win over the Rays.

The Rockies finally acquire P Manny Delcarmen from the Red Sox, sending cash and minor league P Chris Balcom-Miller to Boston. In January 2007, Todd Helton had agreed to be traded, but only to Boston, and a deal had been worked out to swap him for Mike Lowell, pitcher Julian Taveras, and pitching prospects Craig Hansen and Delcarmen. When Boston balked at including Delcarmen the deal fell through.

There’s a favor. The Mets trade OF Jeff Francoeur to the Rangers for IF Joaquin Arias. Francoeur will hit .340 for the Rangers, while Arias will fill the utility role played by Alex Cora, who was released August 7. Ironically, the Rangers had just cut Arias from their roster to make room for Cora. When Sandy Alderson takes over as Mets GM in October he will waive goodbye to Arias.
