In Chicago, the Twins come from behind to beat the White Sox, 8-6. Trevor Plouffe has 4 hits, including a pair of doubles for the Twins, while Adam Eaton has 4 hits, including 3 doubles for Chicago. Jose Abreu receives a pair of walks but goes hitless, ending his 21-game hit streak. The skein started July 6 after he had gone hitless the day before, ending an 18-game hit streak.
3rdThe Twins bomb the White Sox, 16-3. Rookie Danny Santana gets 5 hits for Minnesota, including a double and a triple. Chris Parmelee, Oswaldo Arcia and Eric Fryer cap the scoring with consecutive HRs in the 9thinning.

The Tigers edge the Yankees, 4-3, in 12 innings. The game is only the 4thin the last 100 years that goes at least 12 innings with neither team drawing a walk.
The Cubs defeat the Rockies, 6-5, in 12 innings. Brett Anderson starts the game for Colorado, marking their 20thconsecutive game started by a Rox left-handed pitcher. It ties the modern ML record set by the Royals in 1982. Anderson throws 3 scoreless innings, but leaves with a broken hand sustained when he hits a double in the 2ndinning and the vibration of the bat breaks a bone. He will be out the rest of the season and then sign with the Dodgers.
8thThe Mets defeat the Phillies, 5-4, as Bartolo Colon wins his 200thcareer game. He becomes the 3rdDominican-born pitcher to reach the mark, following in the footsteps of Juan Marichal and Pedro Martinez.
The Braves edge the Nationals, 7-6, aided by HRs from Justin and B.J. Upton. It is the 5thtime the brothers have homered as teammates in the same game, a new ML record.
9thThe Angels outlast the Red Sox, 5-4, in 19 innings. Albert Pujols’ HR is the deciding blow. Dustin Pedroia steals two bases on the same play in the 14th.
At Chase Field, the Diamondbacks beat up on the Rockies, winning 14-4. David Peralta has 3 hits, including a grand slam, and 5 RBI, and Mark Trumbo has a homer and 4 RBI. Nolan Arenado has a double and homer and drives in 3 runs for the Rox. The Rockies are without Carlos Gonzalez, who today is shut down for the season to have surgery on his left knee. During the season, Gonzalez had also been plagued with other injuries including an operation on his finger to remove what the doctors described as a “fatty mass with tentacles.” Gonzo speculated that “It might be a Cheeto, because I eat too many Cheetos.”
10thThe Blue Jays edge the Tigers, 6-5, in 19 innings. It is the 1sttime in ML history that games have been decided in the 19thinning or later on consecutive days. Melky Cabrera gets 3 hits and 5 walks, becoming the 1sty player in 42 years to reach base at least 8 times in a game. Rod Carew did so for the Twins on May 12, 1972.
The Red Sox defeat the Angels, 3-1. The Angels become just the 5thteam since 1900 to play a game of at least 9 innings without recording a single assist.
The Phillies claim veteran Jerome Williams off waivers from the Rangers. He’ll get 9 starts in Philley, posting a 2.83 ERA.

Coffee in a Go cup? In the Twins 4-2 win over the Astros, 32-year-old Houston rookie Domingo Santana ends his 6-game ML career pretty much where he started it as he strikes out 3 times. Santana strikes out 14 times in 17 at bats with no hits.
Two Rochester Red Wing pitchers combine on an odd 3-0 no-hitter. The game began on July 24thin Durham and was stopped on account of rain and finished today in Rochester. The starting pitcher Trevor May made his major league debut August 9 and is no longer with Rochester, and the win goes to Logan Darnell with 6 innings of hitless ball (as noted by Sean Lehman).
13thThe Giants defeat the White Sox, 7-1, behind Jake Peavy, who ends a streak of 18 consecutive winless starts. The only other pitcher to have a longer winless start streak after already having won 100 games in the ML was Fernando Valenzuela.
Mike Napoli drives in 3 runs and Anthony Ranaudo wins his second game since being called up this month as the Red Sox beat the host Reds, 5-4. Aroldis Chapman strikes out the side in the 9thand sets a ML record with strikeouts in 49 straight relief appearances. He’ll go 2 appearances before his next strikeout.
14thThe Brewers beat the Cubs, 6-2. Mike Fiers fans 14 batters in 6 innings to become the 8thpitcher since 1900 to strake out as many as 14 batters in a game in which he pitched no more than 6 innings.

15thThe Rays shut out the Yankees, 5-0, to reach the .500 mark. They are the 4thteam in ML history to get back to .500 after being at least 18 games below that mark that season.
At Arlington, Garrett Cole (13-4) pitches into the 8thinning as the Angels edge the Rangers, 5-4. Kole Calhoun has a single, double and 3-run homer for the Haloes. The win is Richards’ last of the season. In the 2ndinning of his game on the 20thhe will trip covering 1B and require knee surgery that will keep him out until early in 2015.
A bobble. At Comerica Park, the Tigers hand out Miguel Cabrera bobbleheads that read “Most Valuable Player, National League.” Miguel shrugs it off and goes 2-for-3 but Seattle beats the Tigers, 7-2.
17thIn the second of two games the Rockies double the Reds, 10-5, as Michael Cuddyer becomes the only player this season to hit for the cycle. It is the second cycle of his career, as he becomes just the third player in history to produce cycles in both leagues. Bob Watson and John Olerud also accomplished the feat. He scores 3 and knocks in 3. In the exciting first game, the Reds score 2 in the top of the 9thand take a 9-5 lead. Closer Aroldis Chapman then walks the first 4 batters he faces and is replaced by J.J. Hoover (1-9), who fails to clean up. A sac fly makes it 9-7 and a 3-run walkoff homer by Drew Stubbs ends it, 10-9.
Jose Altuve has 4 hits, including a grand slam, to pace the Astros to an 8-1 victory over the Red Sox. His slam follows a mental error by Xander Bogaerts that would have ended the inning.
Conor Gillaspie hits a grand slam and Jordan Danks adds a 2-run homer as the White Sox beat the Jays, 7-5.
18thThe Phillies beat the Mariners, 4-1, as Jerome Williams gets the win for Philadelphia. Williams becomes the fifth pitcher in the last 60 years to register wins for three different ML teams in one season, having previously recorded victories with the Astros and Rangers this year. The others to accomplish the feat were Ray Sadecki (1975), Dock Ellis (1977), Steve Carlton (1986) and David Weathers (2004).
19thThe Cubs apparently beat the Giants, 2-0, in a game called due to rain after 4 ½ innings. The Giants, however, protest the game, citing problems faced by the grounds crew in struggling to cover the field with the tarp. The protest will be upheld by MLB tomorrow, becoming the first one upheld since 1986. The game is resumed on Thursday, and the Cubs go on to win by a score of 2-1.
21stThe Rays edge the Tigers, 1-0, despite getting only one hit. A 1st-inning triple by Brandon Guyer is Tampa’s only safety against David Price, who becomes the seventh pitcher since 1900 to throw a complete-game one-hitter in his first appearance against a former team. Price is the only one of the 7 to lose the game.
The Cubs and Giants play two at Wrigley, the first match an extension of their August 19ththat the Giants successfully protested in the 5th. An unexpected rain caught the ground crew by surprise and it took nearly two hours to cover the infield. Chicago was ahead, 2-0. The Cubs win, 2-1, then lose the regularly scheduled game, 5-3. Buster Posey has 2 doubles and a homer while Madison Bumgarner pitches 7 innings, striking out 12. Javier Baez strikes out 4 times, the second of three times this month he will wear the golden sombrero. The free-swing rookie will wear the sombrero 5 times this year to lead the league, despite going to bat just 213 times. He will strike out 40% of the time, the first batter in 50 years (200 AB) to do so.
The Nationals score an unearned run in the 9thto beat the Diamondbacks, 1-0. It is their fifth walkoff win in their last six games.
22ndThe Mariners defeat the Red Sox, 5-3. Felix Hernandez reaches the 200-strikeout mark for the 6thconsecutive season, becoming the ninth pitcher in ML history to do so.
The Twins clobber the Tigers, 20-6. Eduardo Escobar leads the offense, going 5-for-6, including a triple and homer.
23rdOn “Pups in the Park” night at Dodger Stadium, there is no dogging it from Adrian Gonzalez, who drives in 5 runs as the Dodgers beat the Mets, 7-4. Zack Greinke goes 7 innings for the win.
Mike Leake (10-11) pitches into the 7th, hits a double and scores the only run as the Reds beat the Braves, 1-0.
The Red Sox sign Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo for a whopping $72.5M. He’ll get into 10 games in September, hitting .333 with 2 homers, but he will slip after that.
25thThe Phillies edge the Nationals, 3-2. A.J. Burnett fans 12 Washington batters, becoming the first pitcher in ML history to have a 12-strikeout game for 5 different teams.
The Orioles defeat the Rays, 9-1. The Birds are paced by Delmon Young, J.J. Hardy and Chris Davis, who hit back-to-back-to-back HRs in the 5thinning for Baltimore.
26thThe Phillies beat the Nationals, 4-3, as Jonathan Papelbon records his 100thsave with the team. He becomes the first pitcher in ML history with at least 200 saves with a team in one league (Boston) and 100 or more for a team in the other league (Philadelphia). Hard-throwing Ken Giles, in relief of Cole Hamels, picks up the win by striking out 3 in the 8th.
27thThe Reds defeat the Cubs, 7-5, using 13 hits. Catcher Devin Mesoraco has 2 hits to snap a streak of 13 hitless games by Reds catchers. Jorge Soler hits a homer for Chicago in his first ML at bat, becoming the sixth Cub to perform the feat.
After striking out the side in the 1st, getting through the 2ndwith no score, Detroit ace David Price surrenders 9 straight hits to the Yankees in the 3rd. New York wins, 8-4, behind Shane Greene. According to Elias, the last AL team with hits in 9 straight plate appearances was Detroit, in 1996 against the Jays.
Smells sweet. Roughned Odor hits a 3rdinning grand slam as last-place Texas whips Seattle, 12-4. Erasmo Ramirez allows 10 runs in 3+ innings.
28thGiants P Yusmeiro Petit retires the first 8 Rockies batters he faces in SF’s 4-1 win before giving up a single to pitcher Jordan Lyles, ending his consecutive hitless streak. The streak gives him an ML record 46 consecutive batters retired, breaking Mark Buehrle’s 2009 streak by 1. Buehrle had broken the record held by the Giants Jim Barr at 41.
29thChicago rookie Jorge Soler hits a pair of HRs in the Cubs’ 6-2 win over the Cardinals, to give him 3 homers in his first 3 ML games. His teammate Javier Baez also turned the trick earlier this season. The only other player to do so since 1900 was Joe Cunningham with the 1954 Cardinals.
The Orioles beat the Twins, 9-1. Minnesota’s only run comes on a HR by Trevor Plouffe, the 10,000thhomer hit by the Twins/Senators franchise. The team is the last of the pre-expansion franchise t o reach the mark.

The Angels tie a ML record by using 8 pitchers in a 2-0 shutout win over the Athletics. Three teams previously performed the feat—the Red Sox in 1999, the Rays in 2010, and the Braves in 2012.
The Cardinals score 9 runs in the 8thinning in their 13-2 win over the Cubs. Nine runs is tops for an inning this year. It the first season since 1958 that no major-league team scores 10 runs in an inning even though clubs played over 43,000 frames during the campaign (as noted by Doug Kern). Chicago rookie Jorge Soler becomes the first player since 1920, when RBIs became an official stat, to have both an extra-base hit and an RBI in each of his first 4 ML games.
