1st  The Rangers defeat the Astros, 12-9,  as Adrian Beltre hits for the cycle for the third time in his career. It ties him with Long John Reilly, Bob Meusel and Babe Herman for the all-time ML record.

Hank Congers has 2 homers, including a grand slam, and Carlos Correa adds 2 homers as Houston pounds the D’Backs, 9-2.

Clayton Kershaw extends his scoreless inning streak to 37 as he pitches 8 shutout innings and the Dodgers beat the Angels, 3-1. Yasmani Grandal helps with a 2-run homer.

Travis Shaw is 4-for-4 with his first two ML homers, and scores 5 runs as Boston beats the Rays, 11-7. Xander Bogaerts has 4 hits and 3 RBI and Rusney Castillo has 3 hits and 3 RBI.

The Red Sox announce that Larry Luchino, 69, is stepping down at the end of the season as team president and chief executive.

Mike Hessman of the Toledo Mud Hens hits a grand slam to become the minor league all-time HR leader. His 433rdround-tripper breaks a tie with Buzz Arlett.

4thThe Mets obtain P Eric O’Flaherty and cash from the Athletics for a player to be named.

5thThe Diamondbacks rack up 17 hits as they win on the road, 11-4, over the Nationals. Reliever Adam Barrett takes the loss, allowing 3 runs in a third of an inning. This is Barrett’s last appearance of the year as he will go on the DL and have off-season Tommy John surgery. He will also claim that he was overworked this year, appearing in 40 games (29.1 IP) while warming up and not being used in 15 other games.

Chris Davis hits a 10thinning grand slam—his second grand slam in 12 days—to give the Orioles a 7-3 win over the A’s, 7-3.

Josh Donaldson bangs a 2-run homer, Edward Encarnacion adds a 3-run homer, and Juan Batista hits a thunderous grand slam as the Blue Jays outslug the Twins, 9-7.

6thZack Greinke gives up 5 runs before recording an out but finishes with 6 runs allowed in 6 innings as the Dodgers beat the Phillies, 10-8. Greinke offsets his worst outing three years by contributing 3-for-3 at bat with a homer. Adrian Gonzalez hits a 3-run homer for the NL-West leaders.

7thThe Braves send 3B Chris Johnson to the Indians for 1B/OF Nick Swisher and OF Michael Bourn. All three players will be cut in spring training by their new teams.

The Rangers re-acquire C/1B Mike Napoli and cash from the Red Sox for a player to be named or cash. Napoli will be granted free agency in November.

8thAt PNC Park, the Pirates beat the Dodgers, 6-5, as Joe Blanton gets the victory in relief of starter Nelson Liriano. Liriano gives up 4 runs, but partly offsets that with a 3-run homer.  Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle is probably the game’s most valuable player as he is successful on three challenges on calls. Historian Bob Timmerman says this is the first time it has happened.

In his first start for the Blue Jays, David Price pitches 7 shutout innings as Toronto beats New York, 6-0. Price had given up 16 earned runs in 4.1 innings in his last two starts against New York.

Jake Arrieta pitches 4-hit ball into the 8th, and hits a triple as the Cubs beat the Giants, 2-0. Chicago has now won 10 of 11.

Jerry Sands belts a pinch grand slam and Abraham Almonte, called up before the game, has 4 hits including a 2-run homer, as host Cleveland wallops the Twins, 17-4.

Stephen Strasburg strikes out 12 in 7 innings and contributes 3 hits as the Nationals beat the Rockies, 6-1.

The Diamondbacks trade P OliverPerez to the Astros for Junior Garcial.

The Blue Jays get IF Cliff Pennington and cash considerations from the Diamondbacks in exchange for minor league SS Dawel Lugo.

9thThe Diamondbacks edge the visiting Reds, 4-3, in 10 innings. David Peralta goes 5-for-5 for Arizona, including a double.

11thSeattle beats the Orioles, 6-5, in 10 innings to set an odd mark: the home team wins all 15 games on the ML schedule to set a ML record. The previous mark was 12 games on May 23, 1914 (according to Elias Sports Bureau). Home teams have gone 11-0 six times, the last occurring on Sept. 16, 1989, according to STATS. For Seattle, Nelson Cruz hits his league-leading 34thhomer and AL-high 140thhit and runs his consecutive game hitting streak to 21 games. Mark Trumbo adds a 3-run homer.

Zack Greinke and 2 relievers shut out the Nationals and Yasiel Puig supplies the firepower as Los Angeles wins, 5-0. Puig drives in all 5 runs with a homer and a triple.

12thHisashi Iwakuma hurls a no-hitter as he leads the Mariners to a 3-0 win over the Orioles. It is the first no-no tossed in the AL since teammate Felix Hernandez blanked the Rays in 2012. Since then, 12 no-hitters have been thrown in the NL.

The Mets shut out the Rockies, 3-0. Juan Uribe and Michael Cuddyer each records the 1,500thhit of their careers.

J.T. Realmuto hits a single, triple and a grand slam to drive in 6 runs and lead the Marlins to a 14-6 win over the visiting Red Sox. David Ortiz has a pair of homers for the Fenmen.

The Blue Jays defeat the Athletics, 10-3, for their 10th straight win. It’s Toronto’s 2nddouble-digit win streak of the season. Only 2 other AL teams have duplicated the feat over the last 60 years.

13thIn a 9-2 Cubs victory over Milwaukee, Jon Lester (8-8) shrugs off 5 stolen bases off him as he strikes out 10 in 6 innings. Lester will allow a MLB high 44 stolen bases this year.  The Cubs support the ace with 5 homeruns, 2 by Schwarber.

14thThe Padres defeat the Rockies, 9-5. Matt Kemp hits for the cycle, becoming the first player in the 47-year history of the SD franchise to perform the feat.

The Indians beat the Twins, 6-1, as Corey Kluber hurls a 1-hitter. Joe Mauer’s 4th-inning homer is Cleveland’s only safety.

Red Sox manager John Farrell, 53, announces that he is taking a medical leave and stepping down through the end of the season. He said that bench coach Torey Lovullo will manage the team in his absence and that he plans on being back for spring training. Farrell says that he has a “highly curable” form of lymphoma which had been discovered during hernia surgery in Detroit last week. Hours after Farrell’s announcement, the Sox beat Seattle, 15-1, as Travis Shaw hits two homers.  Boston collects 21 hits.

The Cardinals edge the Marlins, 3-1. Ichiro Suzuki’s 5th-inning single gives him 4,191 professional hits, including 2,913 in  the ML and 1,278 in the Japanese league.

15thPatriots-Seahawks? The Red Sox crush the Mariners, 22-10. The two teams combine to produce 6 half-innings scoring 4 or more runs, a feat that last happened in 1930. Jackie Bradley, Jr, batting 9thin the order, leads the Boston attack with 5 extra-base hits: 3 doubles and a pair of homers. He becomes just the 11thplayer in ML history to get 5 extra-base hits in a game, and the youngest to do so. Bogaerts and Swihart each have 4 hits as Boston amasses 26, double the M’s, and have now hit 47 safeties in 2 games. The biggest surprise is Felix Hernandez, who allows a career-high 10 earned runs.

Chris Davis poles two homers, the second a tie-breaker with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9thoff switch-pitcher Pat Venditte, to give Baltimore a 4-3 win over the A’s.

Brewers’ minor league prospect David Denson becomes the first active player affiliated with an ML organization to come out publicly, revealing that he is gay in a story that appears in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

16thThe Giants shut out the Nationals, 5-0, behind Madison Bumgarner. Bumgarner becomes the second pitcher in modern ML history to throw a shutout, strike out at least 14 batters and hit a homer in the same game. The only other one to do so was Early Wynn in 1959.

The Yankees lose, 2-0, to the visiting Blue Jays, winners of eight in a row, as Josh Donaldson and Jose Bautista homer. Bautista’s homer in the 4this thrown back in by a fan who hits Brett Gardner on the back of the head with the ball. Mark Teixeira also gets into a tussle with a fan when they both go for a foul ball.

The White Sox edge the Cubs, 3-1, as Chris Sale strikes out 15 batters in 7 innings. The loss stops the Cubs 9-game winning streak.

Zack Greinke lowers his ERA to 1.58 in 7 sharp innings and hits a go-ahead homer as the Dodgers beat the Reds, 2-1.

Robinson Cano has 5 hits and Nelson Cruz hits his 36thas the visiting Mariners hold on for a 10-8 win over Boston.

The Orioles swamp the A’s, 18-2, as Adam Jones has a pair of homers and Gerardo Parra has 5 of the O’s 26 hits.  A’s 1B Ike Davis pitches a scoreless 8thinning.

The Pirates defeat the Mets, 8-1, as relief P Arquimedes Caminero gets the win. Pittsburgh relievers are 16-0 since the last loss charged to them. It is the longest streak of consecutive winning decisions in a season by any team’s relief pitchers since a 22-win streak by Pittsburgh in 1909.

Ryan Braun hits a grand slam to tie Robin Yount’s Brewers homerun record of 251. Milwaukee beats the Phils, 6-1.

17thAt Yankee Stadium, the Yankees beat the Twins, 8-7, in 10 innings but lose Mark Teixeira to a freak injury.  Tex fractures his leg when he fouls off a pitch. He’ll have just 3 at bats in late August to finish his season. Brian McCann has a 3-run homer and drives in 5 runs for New York.

18thAlex Rodriguez breaks an 0-for-18 skid when he cracks a 7th-inning grand slam to give the Yankees the lead as they beat the Twins, 8-4. It is his 4thgrand slam in the 7thinning or later to tie or give his team the lead.  No other player in the last 75 years has more than two of these slams.  For A-Rod, it is his 25thhomer this season and his 25thgrand slam.

The Red Sox hire Dave Dombrowski as president of baseball operations, replacing Ben Cherington.  Cherington declines the offer of GM. Dombrowski was fired as Tigers GM and president earlier this month.

19thThe Phillies send 2B Chase Utley to the Dodgers in exchange for minor leaguers Darnell Sweeney (IF) and John Richy (P).

The wind is blowing out at Wrigley as the Tigers outslug the Cubs, 15-8. The teams combine for 8 homers. Detroit P Daniel Norris hits one in his first ML at bat, and Nick Castellanos has 2 homers and 2 doubles to drive in 5 runs.

At Miller Park, Khris Davis hits 2 homers and drives in 5 runs and Ryan Braun goes deep as the Brewers edge the Marlins, 8-7. For Braun, it is career homer #252 to pass Robin Yount as the Brewers all-time HR leader.

The Rangers beat the Mariners, 7-2. Mitch Moreland, Mike Napoli and Elvis Andrus hit consecutive homers in the 7thinning for Texas.

20thThe Giants acquire OF Marlon Byrd from the Reds in exchange for minor league P Stephen Johnson.

The Rays shut out the Astros, 1-0, on Chris Archer’s 1-hitter. Colby Rasmus’ 5th-inning single is Houston’s only hit.

The Tigers defeat the Rangers, 4-0, on Alfredo Simon’s 1-hitter. Rougned Odor’s double in the 5thinning is Texas’ only safety.

21stThe Astros defeat the Dodgers, 3-0, as Mike Fiers (1-0 with Houston) tosses the 5thno-hitter of the season. Fiers strikes out 10, walks 3, and retires the last 21 batters he faces. Fiers, acquired from the Brewers at the trade deadline, had never before pitched into the 9thinning.

At Coors, the Mets beat the Rockies, 14-9, as the teams combine for 8 homers. Yoenis Cespedes leads the New York attack with 5 hits, including a double and 3 homers. He drives in 7 runs, scores 5 and steals a base.

22ndThe Cubs defeat the Braves, 9-7. Nick Swisher hits HRs as both a left-handed and right-handed batter for the 14thtime in his career, tying Mark Teixeira for the all-time record.

The Mets again defeat the Rockies by a score of 14-9. They become the second team in ML history to win consecutive games against the same opponent, by the same score, with more than 20 runs scored in each game. The 1927 Dodgers performed the feat, beating the Pirates in back-to-back games by scores of 11-10. And the 1934 Red Sox won two straight games by a score of 14-9, beating the Browns and the White Sox.  The teams combine for 35 hits, but only 3 homers.

23rdAt Wrigley, the Cubs whip the Braves, 9-3, to complete a 4-game sweep. It is their fourth 4-game sweep this season: the last time the Cubs did that was in 1945. Chris Bryant hits a pair of homers as the Cubs clout 5.

24thThe Mets come back from a 7-2 deficit and crush the Phillies, 16-7, hitting 8 HRs in the victory. In the process, they become the first team in ML history to have each of the first 7 batters in their lineup each hit homers. Ten different players homer in the game—7 for New York and 3 for Philadelphia—to set a new ML record. New York’s 15 extra-base hits ties NL mark by a team since 1900. The league mark of 16 was set July 3, 1883 by Chicago vs. Buffalo.

Rusney Castillo homers and drives in all five Red Sox runs as Boston edges the Chicago White Sox, 5-4.

Kris Bryant homers with 2 outs in the 9thto lift the Cubs to a 2-1 win over Cleveland. It is Chicago’s 5thstraight win. Bryant hit two homers yesterday.

26thThe Tigers shut out the Angels, 5-0, on Justin Verlander’s 1-hitter. Chris Iannetta’s double leading off the 9thinning is LA’s only safety.

27th  The Mets use 3 hits and 5 hits in the 13thto beat the host Phillies for an 9-5 win.

New York pitchers strike out 47 in the 4-game set, the most in a 4-game series since 1930. They complete a 4-game sweep of the Quakers and now lead the NL East by 6.5 games.

The Mariners send veteran reliever Fernando Rodney (2-0) to the Cubs for a player to be named.

28thThe Red Sox edge the Mets, 6-4, in 10 innings. Matt Harvey holds Boston scoreless for 6 innings, marking the 31sttime in 60 career starts that he has held his opponent to either 0 or 1 run for an ML record. Dwight Gooden held the mark previously with 30 such starts in his first 60 games.

RA Dickey goes 6.2 innings to win his 6thstraight decision as Toronto beats the Tigers, 5-3. Josh Donaldson and Troy Tulowitzki hit back-to-back homers and Jose Bautista also goes deep.

Seattle fires GM Jack Zduriencik, with assistant GM Jeff Kingston filling in on an interim basis. Zduriencik had been GM for 7 seasons.

29thThe Blue Jays trample the Tigers, 15-1. Edwin Encarnacion clouts 3 homeruns, including a grand slam, and drives in 9 runs for Toronto. He also extends his hitting streak to 24-consecutive games.

At Turner Field, the Yankees beat the Braves, 3-1, as Luis Severino pitches 6 shutout innings. A fan named Gregory Murray, who stood up to boo Alex Rodriguez, loses his balance, falls 40 feet from the upper deck and is killed in the 6thinning.

Stephen Vogt splashes a 3-run homer into the Chase Field swimming pool as the A’s tip the Diamondbacks, 3-2.

The Dodgers score 5 runs off Jon Lester (8-1) and whip the visiting Cubs, 5-2. Los Angeles tops the three million mark in attendance today as Tampa Bay reaches one million.

30thJust a matter of time. Jake Arrieta hurls the 6thno-hitter of the season as the Cubs shut out the Dodgers, 2-0. Arrieta is the 7thpitcher in ML history to toss a no-hitter after being the losing pitcher in a no-hitter in the same season. He was the losing pitcher in Cole Hamels’ gem on July 25. Arrieta strikes out 12 and walks one in the game. Kris Bryant hits a 2-run homer for the scores. The Dodgers, who were no hit nine days ago by Mike Fiers, have never had two no-hitters thrown at them in one season.

The Yankees score 9 runs in the 7thinning and go on to crush the Braves by a score of 20-6.  Chase Headley and Stephen Drew combine for 7 of the 21 Yankee hits, and each drive in 4 runs.

Take that. After Edwin Encarnacion hits his 30thhomer off Alfredo Simon—and his 4thin two days against the Tigers—Simon retaliates by hitting Encarnacion with a pitch his next time up. The pitch is clocked at 47 mph. Toronto wins, 9-2.

Abraham Almonte hits his first career grand slam and Josh Tomlin works into the 8thinning as Cleveland downs the Angels, 9-2.

The Mets obtain P Addison Reed from the Diamondbacks, sending Matt Koch and minor leaguer Miller Diaz to Arizona. Reed will give New York two solid seasons.

31stThe Astros beat the Mariners, 8-3. Dallas Keuchel improves to 12-0 in Houston this season to become the second pitcher in the last 50 years to win his first 12 home decisions in a season. Johan Santana did it with the Twins in 2006.

Danny Salazer strikes out 10 and wins his 12thas Cleveland stop the Blue Jays, 4-2, although Edwin Encarnacion has a pair of hits to run his consecutive game hitting streak to 26. David Price drops to 11-5 as he goes 7 innings.  With Boston beating New York, the Jays stay 1.5 games ahead of the Yankees.

The Mariners send OF Justin Ruggiano and cash to the Dodgers for a player to be named. Los Angeles also acquires OF Chris Heisey from the Blue Jays for a player to be named.

Enough hangers in the closet? The Red Sox trade OF Alejandro De Aza to the Giants for minor-league pitcher Luis Ysla, making it De Aza’s third ML team this year. He started the season with the Orioles, and was traded June 3 to the Red Sox. He will sign in December with the Mets.

The Braves trade OF Jonny Gomes and cash to the Royals for SS Luis Valenzuela.
