1stThe Red Sox send P Pat Light to the Twins for P Fernando Abad.

The Marlins send P Colin Rea to the Padres for P Luis Castillo.

The Athletics trade OF Josh Reddick and pitcher Rich Hill to the Dodgers for pitchers Frankie Montas, Grant Holmes and Jharel Cotton.

The Rays send OF Brandon Guyer to the Indians for P Jhonleider Salinas and OF Nathan Lukes.

The Rangers get C Jonathan Lucroy and P Jeremy Jeffress from the Brewers for OF Lewis Brinson and P Luis Ortiz. Lucroy initially nixed a trade to Cleveland, but the Brewers had anticipated that and had enough time to work out a trade to Texas.

Kick the tires and light the fires. The Giants obtain P Will Smith from the Brewers for P Phil Pickford and C Andrew Susac.

The Reds trade OF Jay Bruce to the Mets for IF Dilson Herrera and P Max Wotell.

The Yankees send OF/DH Carlos Beltran to the Rangers for pitchers Dillon Tate, Erik Swanson and Nick Green.

The Yankees send P Ivan Nova to the Pirates for a player to be named. Nova’s star has fallen since his 2011 rookie year when he went 16-4. He’ll win his first 5 decisions in the Steel City.

The Blue Jays get P Scott Feldman from the Astros for P Guadalupe Chavez.

The Mets reacquire P Jonathon Niese from the Pirates for P Anthony Bastardo and cash considerations.

The Blue Jays trade P Jesse Chavez and cash to the Dodgers for P Mike Bollinger.

The Twins send pitchers Ricky Nolasco and Alex Meyer and cash to the Angels for pitchers Hector Santiago and Alan Busenitz.

The Rays trade 2B Steve Pearch to the Orioles for C Jonah Heim.

The Twins defeat the Indians, 12-5, as rookie OF Max Kepler slugs 3 homers. He collects 6 RBI.

2ndThe Blue Jays beat the Astros, 2-1. Houston rookie P Joe Musgrove makes his ML debut and strikes out 8 batters in 4 1/3 innings. The 8 strikeouts ties an ML record for Ks by a reliever in his debut.

4thThe Angels play their third and last extra-inning game of the season. Losing 8-6 to the Athletics. They will finish the season with just three extra inning games—all losses—the first AL team to go through a year with no wins in extra innings.

6thThe Blue Jays trade switch pitcher Pat Venditte to the Mariners for a player to be named (Tim Lopes).

At Chase Field, Ryan Braun has 7 RBIs on a single and a pair of 3-run homers as the Brewers stomp the Diamondbacks, 15-6.

The Braves send P Hunter Cervenka to the Marlins for OF Anfernee Seymour and P Michael Mader.

The Pirates trade P Arquimedes Caminero to the Mariners for a player to be named.

7thThe Marlins defeat the Rockies, 10-7, as Ichiro Suzuki gets the 3,000th hit of his ML career.

The visiting Phillies overcome hitting into a triple play and beat the Padres, 6-5. Third baseman Maikel Frankel turns a hard hit grounder by Jabari Blash into Petco Park’s first triple play.

Billy Hamilton leads the Reds to a 7-3 win over the Pirates. The speedster has 3 hits, steals 4 bases and makes a leaping back-handed catch in CF.

In a pre-game news conference at Yankee Stadium, Alex Rodriguez announces that he will be retiring and will become a special advisor and instructor for the club. Rodriguez, 41, is hitting .204 and has been riding the bench. A-Rod has one more year on his enormous $275 million contract.

The Orioles clobber the White Sox,10-2. Manny Machado homers in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd innings for Baltimore, just the second player in ML history to hit homers in each of the first 3 innings of a game. Carl Reynolds of the White Sox did so on July 2, 1930. Manny drives in 7 runs.

Madison Bumgarner allows just 2 hits, but one is a homer by Wilson Ramos as the Nationals beat the Giants, 1-0.

8thThe Giants edge the Marlins, 8-7, in 14 innings. San Francisco’s Brandon Crawford goes 7-for-8 to tie the NL record for hits in a game previously recorded by Wilbert Robinson in 1892 and Rennie Stennett in 1975. Crawford’s hits include a double and triple.

10thTexas slugger Prince Fielder, 32, announces that health problems will force him to retire. A tearful Fielder, surrounded by his two sons, is still wearing a neck brace after his second cervical fusion in less than two years. He is only two years into a nine-year contract.

The Astros demote Carlos Gomez, designating him for reassignment. Houston traded four prospects for the two-time all star in mid-season deal last year.

Aroldis Chapman strikes out the side in the 9thfor his 4thsave since joining the Cubs as Chicago downs the visiting Angels, 3-1. It is their 9thstraight win.

Despite a pinch 2-run tying homer by Kelly Johnson in the 9th, the Mets fall to Diamondbacks, 3-2, in 12 innings. Hot-hitting minor leaguer T.J. Rivera goes 1-for-5 in his debut for New York. The New York native was leading the PCL with a .349 average when the call came.

11thThe Rockies defeat the Rangers, 12-9. Colorado rookie OF David Dahl extends his career-opening hitting streak to 17 consecutive games to tie the ML record set by Chuck Aleno of the 1941 Reds.

The Orioles beat the Athletics, 9-6, as Zach Britton records his 39th consecutive appearance without allowing an earned run for a new ML record. The previous mark was held by Brett Cecil and Craig Kimbrel. Chris Tillman (15-4) is the winner over Andrew Triggs. Triggs is the 8thdifferent pitcher in the last 8 games to start for the A’s. The last time that happened was 55 years ago.

12thThe Rockies lose to the Phillies,10-6, despite 3 HRs by Charlie Blackmon. Colorado rookie OF David Dahl goes 0-for-4, ending his ML-record-tying streak of 17 consecutive games with a hit to start his ML career. The record was set by the Reds’ Chuck Aleno in 1941.

The Cubs connect for four homers off Cardinal reliever Jerome Williams as they power to a 13-2 win over the visitors. Two of the homers are by Matt Szczur.

At Citi Field,  rookie second baseman Ryan Schimpf hits a 1st-inning grand slam and adds a second homer as the Padres beat the Mets, 8-6. Schimpf has six RBIs.

David Price (10-8) struggles through 8 innings, allowing 10 hits but just 3 runs, as the Red Sox beat the visiting Diamondbacks, 9-4. Hanley Ramirez hits a pair of 3-run homers to rack up his second 6-RBI game in three weeks.

13thThe Yankees defeat the Rays, 8-4. Baby Bombers Tyler Austin and Aaron Judge become the first teammates in ML history to homer in their first at bats in the same game, doing so back-to-back in the 2nd inning.

In an 8-2 loss to the visiting White Sox, the Marlins Giancarlo Stanton hits his 25thhomer but pulls a groin muscle trying to stretch a single into a double.  With the prospect of losing Stanton for the remainder of the season, the Marlins (60-56) will consider signing Alex Rodriguez. Stanton will be out of action just three weeks.

Randal Grichuk hits a grand slam that caps a 6-run 8thinning for the Cardinals as they beat the Cubs, 8-4, at Wrigley. The loss stops the Cubs 11-game winning streak. Luke Weaver goes 4 innings for St. Louis in his ML debut.

“They were out there. We just couldn’t get them in,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle laments after an 8-4 loss to the host Dodgers. The Pirates leave the bases loaded in each of the first two innings and finish with 18 stranded runners, tying a franchise record for runners left on base. The last Pittsburgh team to do it was in 1951 (June 5).  The 1905 Pirates team set the then ML-record of 18 left on base.

Does he come in a tin? The Mariners trade 2B Luis Sardines to the Padres for a player to be named.

14thThe Red Sox crush the Diamondbacks, 16-2. Mookie Betts hits 3 HRs in a game for the second time this season. He also did it on May 31 against the Orioles. Betts drives in 8 runs. With two chances to hit a 4thhomer, Betts lines out and grounds out. Dustin Pedroia has 5 hits for the second time this year, and Rick Porcello (16-3) becomes the first Red Sox pitcher in 70 years to open a season 12-0 at Fenway. Boo Ferriss won 13 in a row at Fenway in 1946.

The visiting Angels lose their 10thin a row, dropping a 5-4 decision to the Indians. Albert Pujols is ejected after a called third strike.

Lynchburg shuts out Winston-Salem in a Class A Advanced league game. Lynchburg C Francisco Mejia fails to get a hit, stopping his hitting streak at 50 games. The streak started May 27. It is the 4th-longest such streak in minor league history, and the longest in 62 years.

The Orioles edge the Giants, 8-7. Matt Wieters goes 5-for-5 for Baltimore, including a double and triple.

Michael Fullmer pitches a 4-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Rangers. It is the second game in a row that Detroit has shut out Texas.

At Wrigley, the Cardinals score 5 in the 8thto edge the Cubs, 6-4. Hector Rondon serves up 2 homers in the frame. Aroldis Chapman strikes out 2 in the 9thand then as he is walking off the mound the DJ plays “Smack My Bitch Up,” with references to domestic violence. The Cubs immediately fire him.

To the relief of manager Terry Collins, rookie Steven Matz has his no-hit bid broken up with one out in the 8thinning by Alexei Ramirez. Collins immediately lifts his young pitcher, who totals 102 pitches in the game, and the Mets win, 5-1. Matz totaled 120 pitches in his last start and a few months ago had been found to have bone chips in his elbow.

At Miller Park, Ryan Braun does the heavy lifting, driving in 6 runs on a double and two homers. The Brewers beat the Reds, 7-3.

15thAfter homering in his previous two games with the Yankees, Aaron Judge drives in the only run as New York beats the Blue Jays, 1-0.

Adrian Beltre hits a grand slam and Martin Perez pitches 7 innings as the Rangers beat Oakland, 5-2.

The Diamondbacks chase Bartolo Colon after 4 innings by scoring 5 runs (2 earned) on their way to a 10-6 win over the Mets. Colon does receive a base on balls before he leaves, setting a record with 280 plate appearances without a walk to start a career.

16th    The Braves trade SS Erick Aybar to the Tigers for C Kade Scivicque.

The Yankees are dealt two body blows to their pennant hopes.Nathan Eovoldi announces before the game that he is having elbow surgery that will sideline him for 14-18 months The Bronx Bombers blow a 6-run lead and fall to the Blue Jays, 12-6. New York gets two homeruns from super rookie Gary Sanchez, who homers twice off Jays starter Marco Estrada.

Chase Utley takes two curtain calls in Philadelphia in his first appearance there since being traded to the Dodgers last season. He receives a one-and-a-half minute ovation before striking out in the 1stinning, then takes a curtain call after a grand slam. The Dodgers win, 15-5.

Mookie Betts hits 2 homers and drives in 5 runs to lead the Orioles to a 5-3 win over the Orioles.

17thIn a 4-3 loss at Anaheim, Yunel Escobar is 5-for-5 for the second time this season. All the hits are singles.

At Chase Field, the Mets lose 13-5 to the D’backs. Arizona is led by Yasmany Tomas who hits 2 homers and a triple to drive in 6 runs. Rickie Weeks does the rest of the damage with a pair of homers and 5 RBIs.

18th    The Cubs defeat the Brewers, 9-6. Kris Bryant goes 5-for-5, with a double and 2 homers for Chicago. He becomes the first player in ML history to go 5-for-5 and hit more than 1 homer in a game more than once in a season, having done so previously on June 27 against the Reds.

19thBaltimore sets an ML record by slugging 4 first-inning homers before a batter is retired, including 3 in a row by Manny Machado, Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo. But the Astros shrug off the power display and beat the Orioles, 15-8. Jose Altuve has 5 ribbies for the Astros and hits one of the nine homers in the game.

The Indians stun the Blue Jays, 3-2, on Tyler Naquin’s walk-off inside-the-park homer off Roberto Osuna.

21stAt Coors Field, Nelson Arenado has 4 hits, including a pair of homers off Jason Hamels, as the Rockies top the Cubs, 11-4. Arenado drives in 6 runs. Hamels (13-6) allows 10 runs in 3+ innings as his ERA balloons from 2.58 to 3.45.

In Detroit, the Tigers whip the Red Sox, 10-5, as Justin Upton hits a pair of 3-run homers off Henry Owens (0-1). Justin Verlander (13-7) allows a run in 6 innings.

22nd   The Dodgers crush 7 HRs and rout the Reds, 18-9. Adrian Gonzalez hits 3 of the round-trippers, including a pair of 3-run shots, and drives in 8 runs.

24thThe Marlins obtain OF Jeff Francoeur from the Braves as part of a 3-team deal. The Rangers sent SS Dylan Moore to the Braves, and receive 3 international signing slots, one from Atlanta and 2 from Miami. The Marlins also send C Matt Foley to Atlanta and receive cash considerations from the Braves.

25thThe Nationals receive P Marc Rzepczynski, vowels and cash from the A’s in exchange for minor league IF Max Schlock.

The Phillies send catcher Carlos Ruiz and cash to the Dodgers for catcher A.J. Ellis, P Tommy Belgians and a player to be named.

The Giants shut out the Dodgers, 4-0, on a one-hitter. Corey Seager’s single off Mike Moore with 2 outs in the 9th inning is LA’s only safety.

26th    The Yankees crush the Orioles, 14-4. New York blue chipper Gary Sanchez becomes the first rookie since 1920, when RBIs were first officially recorded, to have at least 10 HRs and 20 RBIs in his first 20 games of a season. Luis Cessa, former Met prospect, allows a pair of homers to Manny Machado, but nothing else over 6 innings.

The Royals defeat the Red Sox, 6-3, despite a 5-for-5 night for Mookie Betts.

The White Sox trade C Dioner Navarro to the Blue Jays in exchange for P Colton Turner.

27th    The Yankees defeat the Orioles, 13-5. Rookie C Gary Sanchez hits the 11th HR of his ML career in his 23rd game, the fewest ever needed to reach that mark. The homer comes in his 81st at bat, tying him with former Yankee Shane Spencer for the fewest ABs needed to reach 11 round-trippers. Sanchez’s homer is one of six in the game, but the only one to bring a curtain call.  The Yanks have scored 27 runs in two games against the Birds.

The Red Sox beat the Royals, 8-3. Dustin Pedroia gets hits in each of his first 4 ABs, giving him a streak of 11 consecutive hits. He his streak is stopped when he grounds into a DP. The ML record is 12 hits in a row.

Corey Seager sets a franchise record for a shortstop when he hits his 23rdhomer of the year, off starter Jason Hammel. The Dodgers defeat the visiting Cubs, 3-2.

The Padres claim Oswaldo Arcia off waivers, making them the fourth team this year for the journeyman outfielder. Arcia, who hit 20 homers for the Twins in 2014, has played for Twins, Rays, and Marlins. He is the first to play for four teams in a season since Jose Bautista, in 2004.  He’ll reward the Pads with  two homers in his first three games.

More than 7,400 original negatives by baseball photographer Charles Conlon sell at auction for $1.8 million

28th    The Blue Jays defeat the Twins, 9-6, as Josh Donaldson clouts 3 HRs for Toronto. His third homer in the 8thprompts a shower of hats on the field.

David Ortiz hits his 534thhomer to tie Jimmie Foxx for 13thplace on the all-time list. But the visiting Royals beat the Red Sox, 10-4, powered by a bases-loaded triple by Raul Mondesi in an 8-run 6thinning. The surging Royals have won 17 out of 21 games.

A team from Endwell, New York becomes the first American team since 2011 to win the Little League World Series,  beating South Korea, 2-1.

30th    The Angels send OF Daniel Nava to the Royals for a player to be named.

31st     The Indians acquire OF Coco Crisp from the Athletics for minor league P Colt Hynes and cash.

The Orioles obtain P Kyle Lobster from the Pirates for P Zach Phillips.

The Dodgers defeat the Rockies, 10-8. Colorado’s Stephen Cardullo and LA’s Andrew Toles both hit grand slams in the contest. It is the first game in ML history in which a rookie on each team hits a grand slam.

The Angels trade P Fernando Salas to the Mets for P Erik Manoah.

The Mets send C Nevin Ashley to the Rangers for cash.

The Orioles obtain OF Michael Bourn from the Diamondbacks for P Jason Heinrich.
