Lester becomes the first pitcher in modern ML history to allow 9 or more runs in appearances of less than 2 innings twice in the same season.
In Detroit, Tigers pitcher Mathew Boyd loses a no-hitter in the 9thwhen Tim Anderson of the White Sox lines a 2-out double. Boyd retires the next batter for a 12-0 win over Chicago. This is the sixth time this season that a no-hitter has been broken up in the 9th, the most since 1989.

Granderson also hit a slam in his last at bat for the Mets on August 17, and he becomes the first player in ML history to hit a grand slam for 2 different teams over a span of 5-or-fewer days. Don Lenhardt performed the feat for the Red Sox and Tigers over an 8-day span in 1952.
Jorge Polanco hits his second 3-run homer of the day as the Twins score 6 runs in the 2ndinning to beat the White Sox, 10-2. The Twins bounce back from a 7-6 loss in game 1.
22ndThe Red Sox defeat the Indians 9-1, as Doug Fister allows just 1 hit—a leadoff HR to Francisco Lindor in the 1st inning. Fister becomes the first pitcher to throw a complete game 1-hitter after allowing a leadoff HR since Jack McDowell did so in 1991.
The Cubs beat the host Reds, 13-9. Ben Zobrist arrives an hour before game time, having been shut out trying to rent a car in his home of Nashville. All cars are gone because of people renting them to see the eclipse. He pinch hits in 7thand drives in three runs. When Bryant is hit on the hand with a pitch in the 9th,Anthony Rizzo plays 3B for Chicago, becoming the first left-handed thrower to play the position since Don Mattingly did so in 1986. At Busch Stadium, the Padres whip the Cardinals, 12-4, as Yangervis Solarte has 3 hits and drives in 6 runs.
The Marlins sweep a DH from the Phillies by scores of 12-8 and 7-4. The 2 teams combine to slug 14 homers in the DH, tying for 2nd most HRs in a DH in ML history. The Cubs and Braves hit 15 round-trippers in a DH on May 30, 1956. At age 43, Ichiro Suzuki hits a PH homer in the first game, becoming the second-oldest player to ever hit a pinch HR. Julio Franco hit 4 of them after turning 44 years old.
The Angels crush the Rangers, 10-1, as Albert Pujols hits the 610th homer of his career for LA, to become MLB’s all-time HR leader among foreign-born players. He had been tied with Sammy Sosa.
The Yankees defeat the Tigers, 9-1. Aaron Judge goes 1-for-1 with 3 walks, ending his ML-record streak of 37 consecutive games with a strikeout.
23rdThe Pirates defeat the Dodgers, 1-0, in 10 innings on Josh Harrison’s walkoff HR. The homer is Pittsburgh’s only hit, as the Bucs are no-hit for 9 innings by Rich Hill, whose bid for a perfect game ends with a leadoff error in the 9th. Harrison becomes the first player in ML history to end a pitcher’s no-hit bid with a walkoff homer. Joe Adcock almost achieved the feat in Harvey Haddix’s near-perfect 13-inning game in 1959, but he was credited with a double when he passed Hank Aaron on the basepaths after hitting a ball into the seats. Hill throws just 99 pitches in the gem.
The Orioles edge the Athletics, 8-7, in 12 innings. Zach Britton blows a save opportunity in the 9th for Baltimore, ending his streak of 60 consecutive successful save conversions. It is the 2nd-longest streak of its kind in ML history, trailing only Eric Gagne’s streak of 84 saves in a row from 2002 to 2004.
Eric Hosmer connects for a 3-run walkoff homer with 2 outs in the 9thlifting host Kansas City to a 6-4 win over the Rockies.

Mike Clevenger strikes out 9 in 6 innings in the Indians 4-0 win over the Royals. Edward Encarnacion hits his 30thhomer, his sixth season in a row that he has reached 30 homers (his least was 34).

Japan beats Texas, 12-2, to win the Little League WS title. It is the 5th championship for Japan since 2010.
The Phillies defeat the Cubs, 6-3. Rhys Hoskins homers for Philadelphia, tying the record for the longest HR streak—5 games—by a rookie. He also starts a triple play in the 5thinning.
The Mariners make five 1st-inning errors to help the Yankees to a 10-1 win. The 5 errors in one inning has not been done since the 1977 Cubs flubbed that many. Three of the errors are by SS Jean Segura.
Yan Gomes has a grand slam in the Indians 9-run 2ndinning as Cleveland beats the Royals, 12-0.
The Brewers edge the Dodgers, 3-2, ending LA’s streak of 22 consecutive series without losing one. The modern ML record is 24.
The Rays beat the Cardinals, 3-2, in 10 innings, with all 5 runs scoring on bases-empty HRs. It is the 10th game in ML history in which at least 5 runs were scored, all produced by solo homers.
28thThe Royals suffer their 4th straight shutout loss, losing to the Indians, 12-0. They become the second team in ML history to get shutout while allowing 12 or more runs in consecutive games, having previously lost to the Rays by the same score. The Browns did so in 1936. The Royals have not scored in their last 43 innings, which is the longest such streak since the Cubs failed to score in 48 straight innings in 1968. The last AL team to go that far was the Browns, with 43 consecutive scoreless frames back in 1913.
29thThe Marlins lose to the Nationals, 8-3, despite Giancarlo Stanton’s 51st HR of the season. The homer gives Stanton a lead of 14 in that category, ahead of Aaron Judge’s 37 which ranks second. Only two other players in ML history led the majors by as many as 14 HRs at any point in a season. Babe Ruth accomplished the feat 7 different times and Jimmie Foxx twice. Stanton’s homer also ties him with Rudy York for the second-most round-trippers in a month with 18. Sammy Sosa holds the record with 20 in June 1998.
The Red Sox shut out the Blue Jays, 3-0, as Chris Sale strikes out the 1500th batter of his ML career. He reaches the milestone in 1290 innings, fewest for any pitcher in ML history to reach that mark. Kerry Wood accomplished the feat in 1303 innings for the previous lowest number of innings.
Scott Schebler’s 1st-inning grand slam, off starter Chris Flexen, jump starts the Reds to a 14-4 victory over the visiting Mets. It is the Mets first loss to the Reds after 14 wins in a row, eight of which were in Cincinnati.
The Royals beat the Rays, 6-2. In the process, they end their streak of 45 consecutive innings without scoring a run, falling 3 short of the ML record shared by the 1968 Cubs and the 1906 A’s. KC was outscored 35-0 over the course of the streak, matching the modern ML record for most unanswered runs allowed. The Brooklyn Superbas set the mark over a 4-game span in 1906.
The Orioles shut out the Mariners, 4-0, on Dylan Bundy’s 1-hitter. Kyle Seager’s bunt single in the 4th inning is Seattle’s only safety.
The Rangers crush the Astros, 12-2, as Joey Gallo hits the 43rd homer of his ML career. With only 95 hits to his credit, Gallo is the first player in ML history to hit as many as 40 homers within his first 100 hits.
The Angels whip the A’s, 8-2, as C.J. Cron hits a pair of homers and drives in 4 runs. He also wins season tickets to the Phoenix Suns games from teammate Mike Trout, who told him if he hit two homers against Oakland he’d get him the tickets to his favorite team. Cron had gone 10 games without a homer.
30thThe Cardinals trade P Mike Leake and future considerations to the Mariners in exchange for SS Rayder Ascanio.
The Braves defeat the Phillies, 9-1, in the opener of their DH. Ender Inciarte goes 5-for-5, with 4 RBIs, his third 5-for-5 game of the year. He becomes the fourth player since 1920 to have 2 games in a season in which he went 5-for-5 or better with at least 4 RBIs. The feat was previously accomplished by Joe Carter (1986), Jeff Kent (1999) and Kris Bryant (2016).
Chicago rookie Ian Happ hits his 20th homer of the season in the Cubs’ 17-3 win over the Pirates. He is the eighth rookie this season to reach the 20-HR mark, the most in any season in ML history. The previous record of 6 was reached four times. The Cubs will have six hitters this year each with 20 homers.
The Mets score 2 in the 1stand make the runs hold up as they beat the Reds, 2-0. Rafael Montero’s bid for a shutout falls short when he is lifted with the bases loaded in the 9th. The win is New York’s 12th in their last 15 games at Great American Ball Park; they had won 14 straight versus the Reds but that streak was stopped by Cincy’s 14-4 win.
The rampaging Indians take a pair from the Yankees, winning 2-1 and 9-4. Jose Ramirez is 4-for-4 in game 1, but is 0-for-5 in game 2. Chad Greene of the Yankees relieves in the first game and strikes out 7 of the 8 batters he faces, a ML record (while facing 8 batters).
