1973 December

4th  The Reds trade P Ross Grimsley to the Orioles for OF Merv Rettenmund and INF Junior Kennedy. Grimsley will win 18 in 1974 for the Orioles.

5th  Ron Santo becomes the first player to invoke the new 10 and 5 rule. The Cubs want to trade Santo to the Angels for 2 pitchers, but he vetoes the deal.

The Dodgers trade OF Willie Davis to the Expos for relief P Mike Marshall. Marshall will win the Cy Young Award for the Dodgers in 1974.

6th  The Astros trade OF Jim Wynn to the Dodgers for P Claude Osteen and Dave Culpepper.

7th  A controversial trade for Kansas City: they get veteran P Lindy McDaniel from the Yankees for OF Lou Piniella and P Ken Wright.

In a continuing housecleaning of hometown heroes, the Giants sell future Hall of Famer Juan Marichal to the Red Sox.

11th  The Cubs come up with a team Ron Santo will agree to be traded to: Southside rivals the White Sox. P Steve Stone and 3 other players go to the Cubs.

In a motel in the Dominican Republic, Cesar Cedeno is with a girl friend when she takes his gun and accidentally shoots and kills herself. After the gunshot, Cedeno calls the office and says that a woman has been killed. Then he flees the scene before turning himself into the police 8 hours later. Cedeno is charged with voluntary manslaughter, and spends 20 days in jail before the charges are reduced to involuntary manslaughter and he is released. He will be found guilty of the latter, fined, but spend no more time in jail.

18th  The Yankees announce the signing of Dick Williams as manager, precipitating a legal showdown with Charlie Finley. Two days later, AL president Joe Cronin rules that the Yankees cannot sign Williams.
