2nd The Indians sign free agent 1B Eddie Murray.

The Phillies trade P Mitch Williams to the Astros in exchange for P Doug Jones and Jeff Juden.

10th The Colorado Silver Bullets are officially recognized as the first all-women’s baseball team in the minor leagues. Sponsored by Coors Brewery, and managed by Phil Niekro, the barnstorming team’s mission is to promote women in baseball at all levels. They will eventually relocate to Atlanta.

12th The Orioles sign free agent 1B Rafael Palmeiro, while the Indians hand free agent Dennis Martinez a two-year contract worth $9 million. With the Expos, Martinez passed up his chance to reach the playoffs with the Braves when he nixed an August 25 trade, exercising his veto rights as a 10-and-5 player. Instead he stayed with Montreal and helped them make their run at the Phillies.

13th The Indians release slugger Sam Horn, who had 33 at bats at the end of the season, hitting .455 with 4 homers. The Yankees will sign Sam in a week.

15th The White Sox sign free agent DH Julio Franco.

17th The Athletics sign OF Rickey Henderson.

18th Top Yankees P prospect Brien Taylor injures his shoulder in a fight near his home in North Carolina. The injury will require surgery and cause Taylor to miss the entire 1994 season. Taylor, who signed for a $1.55 million bonus in 1991 will not make it to the majors.

20th The Indians trade SS Felix Fermin and 1B Reggie Jefferson to the Mariners in exchange for SS Omar Vizquel. Vizquel will win 8 of his 11 gold gloves in Cleveland.

The Yankees sign free agent OF Luis Polonia.

The Athletics trade SS Kurt Abbott to the Marlins in exchange for OF Kerwin Moore.

26th The Athletics sign free agent P Dave Righetti.

31st Baseball’s collective bargaining agreement runs out with no new agreement yet signed.
