5th It is announced that Richard Ravitch will step down as negotiator for the owners on December 31.  He resigns tomorrow.

The Rangers sign free agent C Dave Valle to a 2-year contract.

7th The Cardinals trade second baseman Luis Alicea to the Red Sox in exchange for P Nate Minchey and minor league OF Jeff McNeely.

8th Darryl Strawberry and his agent, Eric Goldschmidt, are indicted for allegedly failing to report a half million dollars of income from the sale of autographs at baseball card shows.

9th The Red Sox obtain OF Jose Canseco from the Rangers in exchange for OF Otis Nixon and 3B Luis Ortiz

The Orioles sign free agent C Matt Nokes.

12th The Cardinals sign free agent pitchers Danny Jackson and Tom Henke.

13th The Angels sign free agent P Lee Smith to a 2-year contract. Smith was the AL Fireman of the Year in 1994 with Baltimore.

The Red Sox acquire second baseman Terry Shumpert from the Royals in exchange for a player to be named.

The Rangers sign free agent P Kevin Gross and second baseman Mark McLemore.

14th The Yankees obtain P Jack McDowell from the White Sox in exchange for minor league P Keith Heberling and a player to be named.

The Phillies sign free agent IF Gregg Jefferies to a 4-year contract.

Indians obtain IF/OF Tim Costo from the Reds in exchange for SS Mark Lewis.

Labor talks headed by federal mediator Bill Usery break down.

15th The Yankees sign free agent SS Tony Fernandez.

The owners approve a salary cap plan by a vote of 25-3, but agree to delay implementing it so that another round of talks with the players can be held.

22nd The Giants trade P John Burkett to the Rangers in exchange for minor league 1B/OF Desi Wilson and SS Rich Aurilia.

The Reds sign free agent P Jack Morris.

23rd With negotiations at a standstill, the owners unilaterally implement a salary cap.

28th The Astros obtain OF Derek Bell, IF Ricky Gutierrez, P Pedro Martinez, OF Phil Plantier, and IF Craig Shipley from the Padres in exchange for 3B Ken Caminiti, SS Andujar Cedeno, OF Steve Finley, 1B Roberto Petagine, P Brian Williams, and a player to be named. P Sean Fesh will go to the Padres next May to complete the 12-player deal, the biggest in the major leagues since 1957.
