1st The Phillies sign free agent P Mike Jackson to a contract.

2nd The Indians sign free agent P Scott Kamieniecki to a 2-year contract.

5th Major league baseball and ESPN agreed to settle their lawsuit by signing a new 6-year, $800 million deal. The suit involved ESPN’s decision to give NFL football games priority over late-season Sunday night baseball games on its main channel.

7th In a disappointment to the Mets, the Mariners sign free agent 1B John Olerud to a 3-year contract.

8th The Rockies sign free agent OF Tom Goodwin to a 3-year contract and tomorrow they ink free agent C Brent Mayne to a 2-year contract.

9th The Orioles sign free agent DH Harold Baines to a contract.

10th The Mets obtain P Jesse Orosco from the Orioles in exchange for P Chuck McElroy.  The 43-year-old Orosco last played for the Mets in 1987.

The Cubs sign free agent C Joe Girardi, late of the Yankees, to a 3-year contract.

Babe Ruth is voted Player of the Century by an Associated Press panel. Willie Mays comes in second.

11th The Cubs obtain OF Damon Buford from the Red Sox in exchange for IF Manny Alexander.

The Mets sign free agent 1B-3B Todd Zeile to a 3-year contract.

12th The Cubs obtain P Ismael Valdes (9–14) and second baseman Eric Young from the Dodgers for pitchers Terry Adams and Chad Ricketts, and a player to be named. Despite missing 40 games, Young swiped 51 bases in 1999.

The Phillies obtain P Chris Brock from the Giants in exchange for C Bobby Estalella.

The Royals obtain IF Jeff Reboulet from the Orioles for a player to be named. Tomorrow they trade a player to be named later to the Giants for P Jerry Spradlin.

13th The Diamondbacks obtain P Brad Clontz from the Pirates for a player to be named.

The Rangers obtain OF Chad Curtis from the Yankees in exchange for minor league pitchers Sam Marsonek and Brandon Knight.

The Devil Rays sign free agent OF Greg Vaughn to a 4-year contract, with payments stretching to 2007.

In what is believed to be baseball’s first 4-team swap since 1985, the Rockies obtain 3B Jeff Cirillo, pitchers Rolando Arrojo and Scott Karl, and IF Aaron Ledesma, the Devil Rays obtain 3B Vinny Castilla, the Brewers obtain pitchers Jamey Wright and Jimmy Haynes, and C Henry Blanco, and the Athletics obtain P Justin Miller.

The Marlins obtain OF Brant Brown from the Pirates in a trade for OF Bruce Aven.

Red Sox P Tom Gordon has ligament reconstruction surgery on his right elbow, and will miss the 2000 season. According to the Red Sox, there is only a 15% to 20% chance that he will ever pitch again. But Gordon will pick up his career in 2001.

14th The Pirates sign free agent OF Wil Cordero to a 3-year contract worth $9 million.

In a swap of unrelated Everetts, the Red Sox obtain OF Carl Everett from the Astros in exchange for SS Adam Everett and P Greg Miller.

The Royals sign free agent C Brian Johnson to a contract.

15th The Royals obtain OF Todd Dunwoody from the Marlins in exchange for 1B Sean McNally.

16th The Indians sign free agent P Chuck Finley to a 3-year contract.

The Brewers sign free agent IF Jose Hernandez to a 3-year contract.

The Cardinals sign free agent C Mike Matheny to a contract.

17th The Dodgers sign free agent and former Dodger star P Orel Hershiser to a contract.

The Orioles sign free agent C Greg Myers to a 2-year contract.

Mariners sign all-time Japanese League saves leader Kazuhiro Sasaki to a 2-year contract.

20th The Brewers trade second baseman Fernando Vina to the Cardinals for P Juan Acevedo and 2 minor leaguers to be named.

The Devil Rays sign free agent OF Gerald Williams to a 2-year contract.

The Expos sign free agent P Graeme Lloyd to a 3-year contract.

The Cubs sign SS Ricky Gutierrez to a 2-year contract.

The Mariners sign free agent second baseman Mark McLemore and OF Stan Javier to contracts.

21st The Mariners sign free agent P Arthur Rhodes to a 4-year contract.

The Dodgers are fined $50,000 and banned from scouting any Dominican Republic players for one year as a penalty for having signed 3B Adrian Beltre as a 15-year-old. Beltre is not given his free agency, according to Commissioner Bud Selig, because he participated in the scheme, and because the claim for free agency was made too late. The players’ association is expected to file a grievance in the matter.

22nd The Braves obtain second baseman Quilvio Veras, 1B Wally Joyner, and OF Reggie Sanders from the Padres in exchange for 1B Ryan Klesko, second baseman Bret Boone, and P Jason Shiell.

Kip Wells, drafted in the first round by the Chicago White Sox, finally signs for 1.495 million plus an invite to the White Sox spring camp.

The Expos obtain inconsistent P Hideki Irabu from the Yankees in exchange for P Jake Westbrook and 2 players to be named. Pitcher Christian Parker will be one of those named.

The Red Sox sign free agent P Jeff Fassero to a contract.

The Orioles promote Syd Thrift to GM replacing Frank Wren, and sign free agent P Buddy Groom to a 2-year contract.

In an interview in Sports Illustratedmagazine, Atlanta Braves P John Rocker offends virtually every race and ethnic group and riders of the #7 subway line in New York in a hateful outburst. Community leaders, media, management, coaches and teammates alike call for action to be taken against the lefty who had 38 saves for Atlanta this past season.

23rd The Mets obtain P Mike Hampton and OF Derek Bell from the Astros for OF Roger Cedeno and pitchers Octavio Dotel and Kyle Kessel. The Mets had offered Cedeno and Dotel as part of a trade to Seattle for Ken Griffey, Jr, but Griffey quickly declined coming to New York. Hampton will win 15 games in New York and win the MVP for the NLCS.

29th The Rangers sign free agent P Kenny Rogers to a 3-year contract.

The Athletics sign free agent OF Rich Becker to a contract.
