8thThe Red Sox trade SS Edgar Renteria and cash to the Braves for 3B Andy Marte. Marte, 21, is the Braves highest rated prospect, according to Baseball America. The Sox had inked Renteria to a four-year $40 million contract a year ago. By adding cash to today’s deal, Renteria’s one year in the Hub City cost the Sox $19 million.
The Tigers signed free agent pitchers Kenny Rogers (2 years, $16 million) and Todd Jones (2 years, $11 million).
The Orioles signed free agent C Ramon Hernandez to a 4-year, $27.5 million contract.
The White Sox trade P Damaso Marte to the Pirates for utilityman Rob Mackowiak.

20thThe Yankees sign free agent CF Johnny Damon to a 4 year, $52 million contract. Damon spurns the Red Sox offer for less as his agent lowers the demand for a 7-year contract to 4 years. The Red Sox will reciprocate by inking Yankee backup catcher John Flaherty. The Sox also sign free agent P Rudy Seanez to a 1 year, $2.1 million contract, with an option for 2007.
The Dodgers sign veteran outfielder Kenny Lofton, most recently with the Yankees.

26thFour-Time All-Star Jeff Reardon is arrested on robbery charges after holding up a jewelry store in Palm Springs Gardens, Florida, a town he has lived in without incident for 20 years. He is arrested nearby. “He said it was the medication that made him do it and that he was sorry,” said policeman David O’Neill. Reardon had a son who died of a drug overdose several years ago. In late August 2006, he will be found not guilt by reason of insanity. Two court-appointed psychiatrists, along with two defense psychiatrists, will testify that Reardon was under the influence of a dozen prescription medications and that there was no reasonable explanation for the robbery.
The Rangers sign free agent P Kevin Millwood, who pitched for the Indians last year, to a 5-year, $60 million contract.
Take Millwood’s locker. The Indians sign free agent P Jason Johnson, 10-10 with the Orioles last year, to a one-year, $4 million contract.
27thThe Diamondbacks trade 3B Troy Glaus and minor league SS Sergio Santos to the Blue Jays for Gold Glove 2B Orlando Hudson and P Miguel Batista. The high-priced Glaus hit 37 homers in 2005 while driving in 97 Diamondbacks, and piles onto the logjam at 3B in Toronto.
28thThe White Sox re-sign P Jon Garland to a 3 year, $29 million contract, to avoid salary arbitration. Garland would have been eligible for free agency after the 2006 season.
29thThe Yankees sign free agent reliever Octavio Dotel to a one-year, $2 million contract. Dotel had Tommy John surgery in May and pitched only 15+ innings in 2005. He will pitch just 10 frames for New York before changing uniforms.
