1st      The Phillies agree to a two-year contract with free agent C Brian Schneider.

The Indians send C Kelly Shoppach to the Rays for a player to be named.

2nd The Braves sign free agent P Billy Wagner to a contract.

3rdThe Phillies sign free agent IF Placido Polanco to a three-year contract.

The Braves sign free agent P Takashi Saito to a contract.

The Red Sox reach agreement on a two-year deal with free agent IF Marco Scutaro.

The A’s acquire 3B Jake Fox, 2B Aaron Miles, and cash from the Cubs in exchange for P Jeff Gray, and minor league outfielder Matt Spencer and pitcher Ronny Morla.

The Mets sign free agent Cs Chris Coste and Henry Blanco to contracts.

4thThe Brewers sign free agent C Gregg Zaun to a contract.

Chone Figgins finalizes a four-year $36 million contract with the Seattle Mariners. With a vesting option for 2014, the deal could be worth $45 million over 5 years.

7thManager Whitey Herzog and umpire Doug Harvey are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.

In the first trade of the winter meetings, the Yankees send P Brian Bruney to the Nationals for a player to be named.

The Cardinals reach agreement on a contract with free agent P Brad Penny. Penny was 7-8 with a 5.61 ERA for the Red Sox but improved to 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA after going over to the Giants.

8thThe Yankees get OF Curtis Granderson in a 3-team deal with the Tigers and Diamondbacks, but it is expensive as New York sends budding star pitcher Ian Kennedy to Arizona, and pitcher Phil Coke and OF prospect Austin Jackson to Detroit. The Tigers send pitcher Edwin Jackson to the Diamondbacks, who send pitchers Max Scherzer and Daniel Schlereth back to Detroit. It is the rare three-team deal that works for everyone.

9thThe Phillies reach an agreement with free agent OF Ross Gload on a contract.

The Brewers reach an agreement with free agent P Randy Wolf on a three-year deal, and with free agent P LaTroy Hawkins on a two-year deal.

The Rangers send P Kevin Millwood to the Orioles for P Chris Ray and a player to be named.

The Marlins send P Matt Lindstrom to the Astros in exchange for minor leaguers Robert Bono (P) and Luis Bryan (IF), and a player to be named.

The Rangers agree to a one-year $6.5 million deal with free agent P Rich Harden, with an option in 2011 for $11 million.

10thThe Pirates agree to a one-year deal with free agent SS Bobby Crosby.

The Twins send P Boof Bonser to the Red Sox for a player to be named or cash.

The Astros agree to a one-year deal with free agent 3B Pedro Feliz. They also agree to a three-year deal with free agent P Brandon Lyon.

After closer Rafael Soriano surprises the Braves by electing arbitration over free agency, Atlanta trades him to the Devil Rays for second-year set-up man Jesse Chavez.

11thThe White Sox agree to a one-year contract with free agent reliever JJ Putz.

The Royals sign free agent C Jason Kendall to a two-year contract.

The Nationals sign free agent veteran catcher Ivan Rodriguez to a two-year contract.

14thThe Red Sox reach agreement on a five-year $82.5 million deal with free agent P John Lackey, and a two-year deal $14.5 million with free agent OF Mike Cameron.

Not waiting for a possible Yankees offer, World Series MVP Hideki Matsui inks a one-year deal with the Angels.

15thThe Dodgers trade OF Juan Pierre to the White Sox together with $10.5 million for 2 players to be named.

16thThe Phillies, Blue Jays, Mariners and A’s complete a 4-team deal that brings ace Roy Halladay to Philadelphia from Toronto in exchange for minor leaguers Travis d’Arnaud (C), Kyle Drabek (P) and Michael Taylor (OF). The Phils send last year’s AL Cy Young winner Cliff Lee to Seattle for minor leaguers Phillippe Aumont (P), Tyson Gillies (OF) and Juan Ramirez (P). Toronto then sends Taylor to Oakland for 3B Brett Wallace.

17thThe Orioles reach agreements with free agent P Mike Gonzalez to a two-year $12 million contract, and free agent 3B Garrett Atkins to a one-year $4 million deal. Neither will work out. Atkins, a former star for the Rockies, will not make it to the end of June (44 G, .214, 1 homer) before being designated for reassignment.

The Dodgers reach an agreement with free agent IF Jamey Carroll on a two-year contract.

18thBags packed, Mr. Bradley? The Cubs finally move Milton Bradley, sending the mercurial outfielder to the Mariners for underperforming hurler Carlos Silva.  For Bradley, it is his 7thteam in 7 years and his 8thteam in 10 years. He was suspended for the last weeks of the season after he criticized the atmosphere surrounding the Cubs. Besides the expensive Silva, who won 5 games in two years in Seattle, the Cubs will receive $9 million from the M’s. Silva has $25 million remaining on his contract; Bradley has $22 million.

The Yankees reach an agreement on a one-year deal with free agent 1B Nick Johnson, who broke in with the Yankees.

19thRed Sox 3B Mike Lowell will have surgery for a torn ligament in his right thumb and the trade that would have sent him to the Rangers is off.

The Reds re-signed 3B Scott Rolen to a 3 year, $23.63 million contract. The contract replaces his current deal and covers 2010-12.

21stThe price of winning. The New York Yankees are hit with a luxury tax of $25.69 million for having crossed the payroll threshold, the seventh time in seven years.  For the purpose of the tax, the Yanks payroll was $226.2 million, and the Yankees must pay a 40 percent rate over $162 million. No other team has to pay the tax.

Putting his personal quirky streak in danger, pitcher Jason Marquis agrees to a two-year deal for $15 million with the Washington Nationals. Marquis has pitched 10 years in a row for teams that have reached the playoffs: the Rockies, Cubs, Braves and Cardinals. Jason will lose his first 7 starts for Washington before going on the DL.

The Mets announce the signing of 30-year-old Japanese pitcher Ryota Igarashi. He is expected to be a setup man for Francisco Rodriguez.

22ndThe Yankees obtain pitchers Javier Vazquez and Boone Logan from the Braves in exchange for OF Melky Cabrera, and minor league pitchers Mike Dunn and Arodys Vizcaino, and cash. Vazquez will win 10 games for the Yankees but fail to make the post-season roster.

The Rangers sign free agent P Darren Oliver to a one-year contract.

23rdThe Royals sign free agent OF Brian Anderson to a one-year contract.

The Braves reach agreement on a one-year contract with free agent 3B Troy Glaus.

The Blue Jays obtain P Brandon Morrow from the Mariners in exchange for P Brandon League and minor league OF Johermuyn Chavez.

The Athletics sign free agent OF Coco Crisp to a one-year contract.

The Angels reach agreement on a two-year contract with free agent P Fernando Rodney.

24thThe National reach agreement on a one-year contract with free agent P Matt Capps.

The Athletics reach agreement on a one-year contract with free agent P Justin Duchscherer.

26thThe Mets sign free agent P Kelvim Escobar to a one-year contract.

28thThe Giants reach agreement on a one-year contract with free agent P Bobby Howry. They also agree to a two-year $12 million deal with free agent IF Mark DeRosa. DeRosa will hit just .193 before undergoing season-ending wrist surgery in May 2010.

29thThe Associated Press announces that Jason Bay has agreed to a four-year $65 million contract with the Mets, pending a physical exam. Bay set career highs with 36 home runs and 119 RBIs last season for Boston but the Sox only offer a two-year contract. The 31-year-old outfielder is a lifetime .280 hitter and has averaged 30 homers and 99 RBIs in his six full seasons in the majors. He had an errorless season last year, one of four Boston outfielders ever to accomplish that.

30thThe Diamondbacks reach agreement on a one-year deal with free agent 2B Kelly Johnson.

31stThe Cubs reach agreement on a three-year $15 million contract with free agent OF Marlon Byrd. Byrd had two solid seasons in 1907-08 for Texas and will be slated to play CF for the Cubs.
