1stThe Giants agree on a one-year deal with free agent SS Miguel Tejada.

2ndThe White Sox reach agreement on a four-year deal with free agent DH/1B Adam Dunn, who has hit at least 38 homers and driven in at least 92 runs over the past seven years.  He’ll hit just .159 with 11 homers in his first season with the Sox.

The Mariners trade IF Jose Lopez to the Rockies for minor league P Chaz Roe.

3rdBeloved Cubs player and announcer Ron Santo dies after a battle with bladder cancer. The nine-time all-star helped raise more than $40 million for the treatment of diabetes, an illness he revealed to the Cubs when he made his first all-star team. A member of the Cubs for 50 years, Santo’s saw his number 10 retired on September 28, 2003.

The Blue Jays acquire P Carlos Villanueva from the Brewers for a player to be named.

The Braves obtain P Scott Linebrink from the White Sox in exchange for minor league P Kyle Cofield.

4thThe Cardinals sign free agent 1B/OF Lance Berkman to a one-year contract. Berkman turned down an offer from the A’s for two years at $2 million.

5thThe winter meetings open with a signing surprise as the Nationals announce the inking of Jayson Werth to a seven-year $126 million deal.  Last season, Werth hit .296 with 27 homers and 85 RBIs for the Phillies.  Werth is represented by Scott Boras, who engineered deals with Washington for the last two Number one overall picks—Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper.

The Padres trade All-Star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox for minor league blue-chip prospects Casey Kelly (P), Anthony Rizzo (1B), Reymond Fuentes (OF), and a player to be named. Padres manager Bud Black, commenting on Gonzalez playing in Fenway, “It will be unbelievable what he does in that park. He’ll play pepper with the Green Monster.”

6thVeteran general manager Pat Gillick is elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.

The Orioles obtain strike-prone slugger Mark Reynolds from the Diamondbacks in exchange for pitchers David Hernandez and Kam Mickolio and a player to be named. Reynolds hit .198 last season while striking out 211 times.

The Diamondbacks sign free agent 3B Melvin Mora to a one-year contract.

The Blue Jays send P Shaun Marcum to the Brewers for IF prospect Brett Lawrie. Marcum was 13-8 with a 3.64 ERA for the Jays.

The Padres sign free agent P Aaron Harang to a one-year contract.

7thThe Dodgers reach agreement on a one-year contract with free agent OF Tony Gwynn Jr.

The Diamondbacks sign free agent closer JJ Putz to a two-year contract worth $10 million. He’ll have a career-high 45 saves in his first season.

The Rockies reach agreement on a two-year deal worth $7.5 million with free agent IF Ty Wigginton. Wigginton, who had 22 homers and 76 RBIs, will replace Melvin Mora.

The Pirates reach agreements on a two-year $8 million deal with free agent pitcher Kevin Correia (10-10) and a one-year deal with free agent pitcher Scott Olsen. Correia will come into camp as the only 10-game winner.

8thThe Cubs reach agreement on a one-year deal with free agent 1B Carlos Pena, who hit 144 homers over the past 4 seasons.

The Red Sox reach agreement on a 7-year deal with free agent OF Carl Crawford. The all-star speedster stole 47 bases this year, won his first gold glove, and had career highs in RBIs (90) and homers (19).

The Royals agree to a one-year $2.5M contract with free agent OF Jeff Francoeur. Despite some criticism about Francoeur being finished, he will have a solid season in Kansas City, then slide.

The Mariners reach agreement on a one-year deal with free agent OF Jack Cust.

The Pirates agree to a two-year deal with free agent OF Matt Diaz.

The Dodgers sign free agent C Dioner Navarro to a one-year contract.

9thThe Orioles obtain SS JJ Hardy, IF Brendan Harris, and $500,000 from the Twins in exchange for minor league pitchers Jim Hoey and Brett Jacobson. Hardy was an all-star with Milwaukee in 2007.

     Free agent pitcher Vicente Padilla signs a one-year $2 million deal to return to the Dodgers. He was the opening day starter last season.

The Mets finalize a two-year contract with free agent pitcher DJ Carrasco and a one-year contract with free agent C Ronny Paulino.

The Royals reach agreement on a one-year contract with free agent OF Melky Cabrera.  The Braves released Cabrera after a season in which he hit just .255 with 4 homers.  “In 2010, I was really fat,” Cabrera will later say.

The Mariners reach agreement on a two-year deal with free agent C Miguel Olivo.

10thThe Braves sign free agent P George Sherrill to a one-year contract.

The Angels sign free agent P Scott Downs to a three-year contract.

11thThe Cardinals trade IF Brendan Ryan to the Mariners for minor league P Maikel Cleto.

13thIn a surprise move, the Phillies reach agreement on a five-year contract with free agent P Cliff Lee. The deal is worth more than $120 million but it is far short of the $150 million, 7-year deal the Yankees offered Lee. The Rangers offered Lee a 6-year deal to stay with them.

14thThe Athletics sign free agent 1B/DH Hideki Matsui to a one-year contract worth $4.25 million.

The Pirates agree to a one-year deal with free agent 1B Lyle Overbay.

The Cardinals reach agreement on a one-year contract with free agent C Gerald Laird.

The Yankees agree to a one-year deal with free agent catcher Russell Martin. Martin’s season ended August 3rdwhen he sustained a hip injury. The Yankees are aware that he will have surgery for it.

15thThe Rockies agree to a two-year contract with free agent IF Ty Wigginton.

The Marlins agree to a two-year $2.5 million contract with free agent P Randy Choate. Choate led the AL in appearances last season.

The Athletics agree to terms on a one-year contract with free agent P Rich Harden.

MLB raises the minimum wage from $400,000 to $414,000.

16thThe Red Sox continue to load up, agreeing to terms on a two-year contract with free agent P Bobby Jenks, and a one-year deal with free agent P Matt Albers.

The Athletics obtain OF Josh Willingham from the Nationals in exchange for P Henry Rodriguez and OF Corey Brown.

The Dodgers sign veteran reliever Matt Guerrier to a 3-year contract worth $12M.

17thThe Diamondbacks sign free agent OF Xavier Nady and C Henry Blanco to one-year contracts.

The Rays agree to terms on a one-year contract with free agent P Joel Peralta.

The Orioles agree to terms on a one-year contract with free agent P Jeremy Accardo.

The Cubs agree to terms with free agent P Kerry Wood on a one-year contract, worth $1.5 million.  Wood turns down a $3 million offer from both the Yankees and White Sox.  “I’m a North sider.”

The Padres reach agreement on a two-year contract with free agent 2B Orlando Hudson.

The Yankees reach agreement on a two-year $8 million contract with free agent P Pedro Feliciano. When the reliever starts the season on the DL, Brian Cashman will declare that Feliciano was “abused” through overuse by the Mets, for whom he made 266 appearances in the past three years, leading the NL in that category each season.  After Cashman’s statement, Mets pitching coach will retort, “They didn’t know that when they signed him? He (Feliciano) was asked whether he was able to pitch, He said ‘yes’ every day—every day—and wanted to pitch even more than we pitched him. That was part of the reason we decided not to re-sign him. We knew we had used him 270-some times in the past three years.” The lefty will stay on the Yankee payroll for two years, availing himself of their medical expertise, but never pitch an inning for them.  He will re-sign with the Mets in January 2013.

The Rays trade SS Jason Bartlett and a player to be named to the Padres for pitchers Adam Russell and Cesar Ramos, and minor leaguers Brandon Gomes (P) and Cole Figueroa (IF). Reid Brignac is expected to be the shortstop for the Rays in 2011.

18thThe Red Sox sign free agent P Dan Wheeler to a one-year deal.

19thThe Royals trade 2009 Cy Young winner Zack Greinke, SS Yuniesky Betancourt and $2 million to the Brewers for OF Lorenzo Cain, SS Alcides Escobar, and pitchers Jake Odorizzi and Jeremy Jeffress. The taciturn Greinke was 10-14 this past season and waived his no-trade clause to go to the Brewers. He has two years and $27 million left on his contract. Greinke left baseball for most of 2006, and is under medication for social anxiety disorder.

20thThe Nationals agree to a one-year deal with free agent OF Rick Ankiel.

The Indians agree to a one-year deal with free agent OF Austin Kearns.

Houston signs veteran infielder Bill Hall to a one-year contract worth 3.25M. Hall is expected to play second base but it is not a good fit for the 31-year-old.  The Astros will release him in June and he will sign with the Giants.

The White Sox ink reliever Jesse Crain to a 3-year contract for $13M. Crain pitched for the Twins for 7 years.

21stThe Mariners trade C Rob Johnson to the Padres for a player to be named or cash considerations.

23rdThe Brewers sign free agent P Sean Green to a one-year contract.

The Rockies obtain P Matt Lindstrom from the Astros in exchange for minor league pitchers Wes Musick and Jonathan Aristil.

The Rangers reach agreement on a one-year contract with free agent P Arthur Rhodes.

24thThe Padres reach agreement on a one-year contract with free agent OF Brad Hawpe.

26thThe Rangers agree to a one-year deal with free agent P Brandon Webb.

27thThe Brewers agree to a one-year deal with free agent P Takashi Saito.
