1stThe Twins reach agreement on a 3-year $24 million deal with free agent P Phil Hughes, 4-14 with New York this past season. He will turn it around in Minnesota in 2014 and the Twins will tear up the final two years of his contract and reward him with a 5-year deal.

2nd The Athletics reach agreement on a 2-year deal with free agent P Scott Kazmir.

The Nationals acquire P Doug Fister from the Tigers in exchange for UT Steve Lombardozzi and pitchers Robbie Ray and Ian Krol.

The Athletics obtain P Jim Johnson from the Orioles for 2B Jemile Weeks.

The Blue Jays agree to terms with free agent C Dioner Navarro on a 2-year deal.

The Pirates get veteran catcher Chris Stewart from the Yankees for a player to be named (Kyle Haynes).

In an ill-conceived move the Mets release infielder Justin Turner, who hit .280 this past season. He will sign with the Dodgers just before Spring training in 2014.

3rdThe Athletics acquire OF Craig Gentry and P Josh Lindblom from the Rangers in exchange for OF Michael Choice and IF Chris Bostick.

The Rays obtain C Ryan Hanigan from the Reds and P Heath Bell from the Diamondbacks in a 3-team deal. Tampa Bay sends minor league P Justin Choate and a player to be named to Arizona. The Diamondbacks ship P David Holmberg to Cincinnati.

The Athletics get P Luke Gregerson from the Padres for OF Seth Smith.

The Rockies send OF Dexter Fowler to the Astros, along with a player to be named, in exchange for OF Brandon Barnes and P Jordan Lyles.

The MLB Players Association appoints former ML OF Tony Clark as the head of the baseball players’ union. Clark replaces Michael Weiner who died on November 21.

The Marlins agree to a 3-year deal with free agent C Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

The Phillies send C Erik Kratz and P Rob Rasmussen to the Blue Jays for P Brad Lincoln.

The Yankees reach an agreement on a 7-year deal with free agent OF Jacoby Ellsbury. In his 7 years with the Red Sox Ellsbury compiled a .297/.350/.439 with 241 stolen bases.

The Rockies sign free agent 1B Justin Morneau to a 2-year contract.

4thThe Tigers agree to terms on a 2-year deal with free agent P Joe Nathan.

The Red Sox sign free agent catcher AJ Pierzynski to a one-year deal.

Joe Garagiola is named winner of the Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award, given to an individual for efforts to enhance baseball’s positive impact on society.

The Cubs agree to a one-year contract with free agent P Wesley Wright.

5thThe Red Sox agree to a 2-year deal with free agent P Edward Mujica.

The Phillies sign free agent C Wil Nieves to a one-year deal.

The Brewers trade OF Norichika Aoki to the Royals for P Will Smith.

6thThe Marlins agree to a deal with free agent SS Rafael Furcal. Furcal missed the 2013 season recovering from Tommy John surgery.

The Astros sign free agent P Scott Feldman to a 3-year deal.

The Mets agree to terms on a 4-year contract with free agent OF Curtis Granderson.

In a major signing, the Mariners agree to terms on a 10-year deal with free agent 2B Robinson Cano. The M’s will pay Cano $250M.

The Rangers agree on a one-year deal with free agent catcher JP Arencibia.

The Marlins agree to terms on a 2-year deal with free agent 1B Garrett Jones.

The Yankees sign free agent IF Kelly Johnson to a 1-year deal worth $3 million. He hit 16 homers in each of his last two seasons.

The Nationals sign free agent OF Nate McLouth to a 2-year deal.

The Orioles agree on a 2-year deal with free agent P Ryan Webb.

7thThe Astros sign free agent P Chad Qualls to a 2-year deal.

9thManagers Bobby Cox, Tony La Russa and Joe Torre are unanimously elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.

10thThe first trade of the winter meetings is a 3-team deal that sends slugging 1B/OF Mark Trumbo from the Angels to the Diamondbacks. Pitcher Tyler Skaggs goes from Arizona to LA, while pitcher Hector Santiago from the White Sox to the Angels, and top-100 prospect OF Adam Eaton from the Diamondbacks to Chicago.

The Athletics sent P Brett Anderson to the Rockies in exchange for pitchers Drew Pomeranz, Chris Jensen and cash.

The Tigers agree to terms on a 2-year deal with free agent OF Rajai Davis.

11thThe Mets reach agreement on a 2-year $20 million deal with free agent P Bartolo Colon. New York hopes that the vet can replace Matt Harvey this year.

The Mariners sign free agent OF Corey Hart to a 1-year deal. They also acquire 1B Logan Morrison from the Marlins in exchange for P Carter Capps.

Writer Roger Angell is announced as winner of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award.

The Athletics send lefty pitcher Jerry Blevins to the Nationals for speedster Billy Burns, the Nationals minor league Player of the Year.

The Astros get P Anthony Bass from the Padres for a player to be named or cash.

12thThe Giants agree to terms on a one-year contract with free agent OF Michael Morse.

The Pirates sign free agent fireballer Edinson Volquez to a one-year deal.

13thThe Royals agree to a 4-year contract with free agent IF Omar Infante.

The Rockies sign free agent P Boone Logan to a 3-year contract.

Reward for service.  The Red Sox agree to a 2-year deal with free agent Mike Napoli, who helped win the championship for Boston this year.  The contract is for $26 million each season.

16thThe Cardinals sign free agent 2B Mark Ellis to a one-year deal.

The Indians reach agreement on a one-year deal with free agent P John Axford.

The Braves agree to a one-year deal with free agent P Gavin Floyd.

The White Sox send closer Addison Reed to the Diamondbacks for 3B Matt Davidson. Davidson spent most of 2013 at Las Vegas and played in the Futures game in New York, where he was the MVP.

17thThe Yankees add depth by signing two veterans, inking oft-injured second baseman Brian Roberts to a $2 million one-year contract, and southpaw Matt Thornton for 2 years at $7 million. Roberts, 36, gives the Yankees another option at 2B now that Cano has signed with Seattle. Playing for Baltimore, he made the last out at the old Yankee Stadium. Thornton will fill the southpaw slot held by Boone Logan, who signed a 3-year $16.5 million contract with the Rockies.

The Astros agree to terms on a one-year deal with free agent P Matt Albers.

18thThe Padres agree to terms on a 2-year contract with reliever Joaquin Benoit, giving him a deal for $15.5M, the richest in Padres history.

The Rockies send P Josh Outman to the Indians for OF Drew Stubbs. They also send IF Jonathan Herrera to the Red Sox in exchange for P Franklin Morales and minor league P Chris Martin.

The Braves obtain C Ryan Doumit from the Twins for minor league P Sean Gilmartin.

The Astros get 1B/OF Jesus Guzman from the Padres for IF Ryan Jackson.

Pitcher Roberto Fernandez, formerly known as Fausto Carmona, puts his John Henry on a one-year $4.5 million contract with the Phillies.

The Angels sign free agent OF/DH Raul Ibanez to a one-year deal.

The Marlins agree to terms on a one-year deal with free agent 3B Casey McGehee. McGehee, 31, spent the 2012 season as a teammate of Masahiro Tanaka helping the Rakuten Eagles win the Japanese Series title. He hit .292 with 28 homers.

The Orioles send IF Danny Valencia to the Royals in exchange for OF David Lough.

In a shocker, the MLB Players Association announces that the Astros are the most frugal team in the majors with an average salary of $549.000, the lowest in 14 years. The Yankees were again the highest at $8.17 million.  The overall big league average salary is $3.339 million.

19thThe Athletics get OF Carey Brown from the Nationals for cash.

The White Sox agree to terms on a one-year deal with P Scott Downs.

The White Sox agree to terms on a one-year deal with P Ronald Belisario.

The Twins agree to terms on a one-year deal with free agent C Kurt Suzuki.

21stThe Rangers agree to terms on a 7-year deal with free agent OF Shin-Soo Choo.

23rdThe Dodgers on a 1-year deal with free agent P Chris Perez.

27thThe Angels agree to terms on a one-year deal with free agent veteran Raul Ibanez.

The Cubs agree to terms on a one-year $4 million deal with free agent P Jose Veras. Expected to be the closer, he’ll lose his job and will be gone by early June.

31stThe Astros agree to terms on a one-year deal with free agent P Jesse Crain.
