13th In the 15th annual baseball players golf championship in Miami Springs, Alvin Dark tops Cleveland manager Al Lopez to win the tourney, though it takes him 22 holes to do it. Wind conditions lead to Dark shooting an 11 over in the finals. Lopez stayed in contention with an eagle 3 on a 470-yeard hole. Dark won the tourney in 1955 and 1951. Dark was runner-up in the medalist round with a 76 to John Grey’s 75. George Saab defeats Steve Shuba in the minor league division. Jack Russell wins the title for inactive major leaguers, defeating George Abrams. Perennial contender Pete Harris, competing in the minor league division, had the lowest score with 71.
14th On the West Coast, former Seattle manager Jerry Priddy shoots a 73 to win the Southern California Hot Stove league golf championship at the Clock Country Club. Priddy beats pre-tourney favorite Peanuts Lowry by a stroke. The day’s best score is shot by Hal Gregg, now retired, who cards a 71. Al Zarilla loses his title as worst golfer, coming home at an even 100, while Herm Besse carded a 110.
17th The Orioles get P Erv Palica from the Dodgers for 1B Frank Kellert and cash. This replaces the Preacher Roe deal, which fell through when the Brooklyn lefty announced his retirement.
