8th  Commissioner Bowie Kuhn announces the Hall of Fame selection of Josh Gibson and Buck Leonard by the Special Committee on the Negro Leagues.

9th  Angels IF Chico Ruiz, age 33, is killed in an auto crash in San Diego.

25th  The Cardinals trade P Steve Carlton to the Phillies for P Rick Wise. Carlton will go on to win 241 games and 4 Cy Young awards for the Phils.

28th  Former pitching star Dizzy Trout dies in Chicago at the age of 56. Among is survivors is a 14-year-old son, Steve, who will begin his major-league career in 1978.

29th  Hank Aaron signs a record-breaking contract with the Braves, calling for $200,000 annually for three years.
