2nd The Dodgers extend the contract of announcer Vin Scully through 2008, which will be his 59thyear with the Dodgers.  Scully, 78, began announcing for the Dodgers in 1950.

The Nationals sign free agent pitcher Felix Rodriguez to a contract.

3rdThe Giants announce that the name of their ballpark will be changed from SBC Park to ATT&T Park beginning in March. It is the 3rdname for the stadium, which was originally called Pacific Bell Park.

6thThe Blue Jays sign free agent C Bengie Molina to a contract.

7thThe Diamondbacks sign free agent OF Jeff DaVanon to a contract.

8thJohnny Damon takes out a full-page ad in the Boston Globethanking Red Sox fans for supporting him. The ad is in the form of a letter.

The Reds hired 52-year-old Wayne Krivsky as GM. Krivsky was the assistant GM with the Twins for the past 8 years.

Happy Valentine’s Day for Jose Lima who signs a contract with the Mets, but the romance will end after Lima gives up 22 runs in 17+ innings. In 2008 Lima will pitch in the Korean major leagues for the Kia Tigers.

15thThe Angels sign free agent pitcher Jeff Weaver to a one-year $8.3 million contract.

27thA committee of 12 baseball historians elects 17 candidates to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The electees include 7 Negro leagues players (Ray Brown, Willard Brown, Andy Cooper, Biz Mackey, Mule Suttles, Cristobal Torriente, and Jud Wilson), 5 pre-Negro leagues players (Frank Grant, Pete Hill, Jose Mendez, Louis Santop, and Ben Taylor), 4 Negro leagues executives (Effa Manley, Alex Pompez, Cum Posey, and J.L. Wilkinson), and one pre-Negro leagues executive (Sol White). Manley becomes the first woman elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 2016, Cum Posey will be elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame, the first person in both baseball and basketball’s HOF.

The Nationals sign free agent pitcher Pedro Astacio to a contract.

Former St. Louis Cardinals hurler Rick Ankiel, trying to make the team as an outfielder, injures his left knee during an intrasquad game. He will undergo season-ending surgery on May 26.
