4th Blue Jays C Benito Santiago is injured when he loses control of the car he is driving and crashes into a tree in Ft. Lauderdale. He sustains ligament damage in his right knee and fractures his pelvis, limiting him to just 15 games at the end of the season. Toronto also loses 1B Carlos Delgado to a shoulder injury, which he sustains while diving for a ball in a game in Puerto Rico. He will be lost to the team until late April.

5th 324–game winner Don Sutton is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on his 5th try. Sutton, who missed election by 9 votes in 1990, was named on 81.6% of the ballots.

9th Red Sox 1B Mo Vaughn is arrested and charged with DWI when his pickup truck strikes an abandoned car and flips over.

14th Astros trade OF James Mouton to Padres for P Sean Bergman.

16th In a surprise move, the Cubs sign burly free agent P Rod Beck to a 1-year contract. Beck reportedly had reached an agreement with Cleveland.

20th Veteran P Lee Smith and 3B Terry Pendleton sign minor league contracts with the Royals, who invite them to training camp as non–roster players.

22nd Free agent OF Rickey Henderson signs on for a 4th tour of duty with the Oakland A’s.

24th Minor league 1B Doug Blosser is killed in an automobile accident in Sarasota, Florida.

29th Cleveland signs free agent DH–OF Geronimo Berroa to a 1-year contract.

Former White Sox SS Ozzie Guillen signs a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles, who invite him to spring training as a non–roster player.
