3rdThe Orioles sign free agent 1B/3B/OF Aubrey Huff to a three-year contract.

4thThe Red Sox sign free agent P Joel Pineiro to a contract.

The Indians sign free agent P Keith Foulke to a contract. He will retire just before reporting to spring training, thus taking the Indians off the hook for his $7 million contract.

The Astros agree to a contract with free agent IF Mark Loretta.

5thThe Mariners agree to a contract with free agent P Chris Reitsma.

The Mets sign a one-year deal with free agent IF Dave Newhan.

7thThe Yankees agree to a contract with free agent IF Miguel Cairo.

8thThe Yankees trade P Randy Johnson to the Diamondbacks in exchange for pitchers Luis Vizcaino, Ross Ohlendorf and Steven Jackson, and SS Alberto Gonzalez. For Johnson, who won 17 games in New York in each of his last two years, it is his second stint with the Diamondbacks. He will slip to 4 wins in 2007.

9thCal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Suspected steroid user Mark McGwire falls far short of receiving the necessary votes.

The Giants agree to a one-year deal with free agent P Russ Ortiz. Ortiz was 0-8 this past year, but will improve to 2-3 in 2007.

The Rockies sign veteran catcher Javy Lopez to a one-year deal.

10thLou Gehrig, Christy Mathewson, Joe Sewell and Jack Barry are elected to the first veterans class of the College Baseball Hall of Fame.

16thThe Mets sign a three-year deal with free agent P Scott Schoeneweis and a one-year deal with P Jorge Sosa.

17thA month after the firing of Regan Books publisher Judith Regan, Harper/Collins drops the controversial fictional memoir of Mickey Mantle, written by Peter Golenbock. The publisher says it is by mutual agreement.

18thThe Braves agree to a one-year deal with free agent OF Craig Wilson.

19thThe Indians sign free agent OF Trot Nixon to a contract.

The Braves trade 1B Adam LaRoche and OF Jamie Romak to the Pirates for pitcher Mike Gonzalez and SS Brent Lillibridge.

22ndThe Rockies reach agreement on a contract with free agent P Brian Lawrence.

The Twins reach agreement on a contract with free agent P Ramon Ortiz.

23rdThe Athletics trade pitcher Kirk Saarloos to the Reds for minor league reliever David Shafer. Each team will also receive a player to be named.

The Phillies sign free agent pitcher Antonio Alfonseca to a contract.

24thThe Cubs sign free agent OF Cliff Floyd to a contract.

25thThe White Sox agree to a one-year deal with free agent OF Darin Erstad. Erstad is the only player to win a Gold Glove as an infielder and outfielder: he won in 2000 and 2002 in the outfield and in 2004 as a first baseman, all with the Angels.

The Blue Jays sign free agent pitcher Tomo Ohka to a contract.

26thSeven weeks after reaching a preliminary agreement, the Red Sox announce a $70 million agreement with the oft-injured J.D. Drew.  In the final week of the 2006 season, Drew had told The Orange County Registerthat he had no intention of leaving the Dodgers. Whoops.

29thThe Mariners agree to a one-year contract with free agent P Jeff Weaver.
