The Athletics send popular veteran Nick Swisher to the White Sox for pitchers Gio Gonzalez and Fautino De Los Santos, and OF Ryan Sweeney.

5thThe Mets reacquire OF Angel Pagan from the Cubs for OF Corey Coles and P Ryan Meyers. New York had sold Pagan to Chicago in January 2006.

7thThe Mets roll the dice and re-sign free agent Fernando Tatis. New York had signed the veteran a year ago but he did not play in the majors. Tatis will hit .297 and belt 11 homers this season.

8thGoose Gossage becomes the 5th relief pitcher elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, earning the honor on his 9th try on the ballot.

On the same day that he appears on “60 Minutes” Roger Clemens files a lawsuit against his former trainer Brian McNamee for defamation of character because he asserted that Clemens took performance-enhancing drugs. Revelations in the coming months of the Rocket’s alleged infidelities will overshadow the lawsuit. In early May Clemens will acknowledge that he “made mistakes” in his personal life.

The Mariners sign free agent IF Miguel Cairo to a one-year contract.

9thAlex Cabrera, whose name appeared in the Mitchell Report issued last month, agrees to a $2.2 million, one-year contract with the Orix Buffaloes of Japan’s Pacific League.

11thThe Indians announce plans to rename their ballpark Progressive Field. The ballpark has been known as Jacobs Field since it opened in 1994.

The Rangers sign free agent pitcher Eddie Guardado to a one-year contract.

14thThe Brewers sign free agent OF Mike Cameron to a one-year contract.

The Braves obtain OF Mark Kotsay from the A’s in exchange for pitchers Joey Devine and Jamie Richmond.

The Cardinals and Blue Jays exchange All-Star third basemen, with Troy Glaus going to St. Louis and Scott Rolen heading for Toronto. Glaus will have the better season.

The Atlanta Constitution reports that the Braves AAA franchise is leaving Richmond at the end of the 2010 season and relocating to Gwinnett County, a suburb of Atlanta. The Triple A Braves have played in Richmond since the mid-60’s and at The Diamond since the mid-80s. But the sparkle is off The Diamond and Richmond officials have been dragging their spikes about extensive renovations.
