4th The Rockies agree to a one-year contract with free agent C Miguel Olivo.

Los Angeles Angels sportscaster Rory Markas dies at the age of 54 at his home in Southern California. He had been with the Angels for eight seasons. From 1994-97, he was the lead announcer for the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers on the Clippers radio network.

5thThe Phillies sign free agent P Danys Baez to a two-year $5.25 million contract. The much-traveled Baez last pitched with the Orioles.

The Cardinals sign Matt Holliday to a long-term contract that includes so much deferred compensation that the club will be paying him until 2029.

6thAndre Dawson is elected to the Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association of America. The Hall will decide that he will wear an Expos cap on his plaque. Bert Blyleven finishes second in the voting missing out on election by just 5 votes.

The Nationals sign free agent P Matt Capps to a one-year contract.

7thThe Braves reach an agreement on a one-year contract with free agent IF/OF Eric Hinske.

The Red Sox sign free agent 3B Adrian Beltre to a one-year contract worth $9 million. Hindered by left shoulder woes and a sensitive injury due to not wearing a protective cup, Beltre hit just .265 with eight homers and 44 RBIs in 111 games and 477 at-bats. The Sox also send 1B Casey Kotchman to the Mariners in exchange for OF Bill Hall, a player to be named, and cash.

8th The Royals reach agreement on a one-year contract with free agent OF Scott Podsednik.

The Astros reach agreement on a one-year contract with free agent P Brett Myers.

10th In a solid move, the Giants reach agreement on a one-year contract with free agent 1B Aubrey Huff.

At a press conference, slugger Mark McGwire surprises no one by admitting that he took steroids while setting his home run records more than ten years ago. McGwire apologizes for his acts. Cardinal chairman Bill DeWitt, Jr. says, “On behalf of the entire Cardinals organization, I believe Mark McGwire today did the right thing by telling the truth and openly acknowledging his past mistakes. No one condones what Mark did more than 10 years ago, but we hired him as our hitting coach because we know there are many contributions that Mark can and will make to our team and to this game.”

11thThe Rangers sign free agent OF Vladimir Guerrero to a one-year contract. They also reach agreement on a one-year deal with free agent SS Khalil Greene.

12thThe Pirates reach agreement on a one-year contract with free agent OF Ryan Church.

15thThe Diamondbacks sign free agent 1B Adam LaRoche to a one-year contract.

The Tigers reach agreement on a two-year contract with free agent P Jose Valverde.

16thThe Padres send 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff and minor league IF Eric Sogard to the Athletics in exchange for outfielders Scott Hairston and Aaron Cunningham. It is Hairston’s second tour of duty with the Padres.

20thThe Brewers agree to terms with free agent P Doug Davis on a one-year contract.

The Angels agree on a two-year contract with free agent P Joel Pineiro, 15-12 last year with the Cardinals.

21stThe Pirates reach agreement on a one-year deal with free agent P Octavio Dotel.

22ndThe Royals reach agreement on a one-year deal with free agent OF Rick Ankiel.

The Mets obtain OF Gary Matthews Jr. from the Angels in exchange for P Brian Stokes.

23rd The Orioles bring back free agent SS Miguel Tejada signing him to a one-year, $6 million contract. It won’t last the year.

26thThe Cubs sign free agent OF Xavier Nady to a one-year contract. Nady missed most of last season with an injury.

The Athletics sign free agent P Ben Sheets to a one-year contract. Sheets was 13-9 in 2008 and sat out last year following surgery.

27thThe Twins agree to a one-year contract with free agent 1B/DH Jim Thome. Thome will hit 25 homers to lead the Twins.

The Padres agree to a one-year contract with free agent P Jon Garland.

The Yankees reach agreement on a one-year $2 million contract with free agent OF Randy Winn, effectively shutting out Johnny Damon from returning to the Yankees.

28th  The Brewers sign CF Jim Edmonds to a minor league contract. Edmonds, 40, last played in 2008 when he hit .284 with 20 homers.

The Phillies sign free agent P Jose Contreras to a one-year contract. Contreras, listed as 39 years old, was 6-13 last season pitching for the White Sox and the Rockies.

The Nationals sign free agent P Tyler Walker to a one-year contract.

29thThe Brewers sign free agent OF Eric Byrnes to a one-year contract.
