2ndThe White Sox agree to terms on a one-year deal with free agent P Scott Downs.

8thGreg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Frank Thomas are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association.

10thThe Texas Rangers lose pitcher Derek Holland for most of the season when he tears ligaments behind his left kneecap and undergoes surgery.  The accident happened when Holland tripped over his dog while playing with him.  He will return for 6 games in September, going 2-0 and posting a 1.46 ERA.

11thArbitrator Fredric Horowitz rules that Alex Rodriguez is suspended for the entire 2014 season as a result of a drug investigation by Major League Baseball. His decision cuts the original suspension meted out by Bud Selig’s original of 211 games. It is the longest suspension ever handed down in ML history.

13thThe Cubs unveil their new mascot, named Clark, the first mascot in franchise history. Clark, a wide-eyed pantless bear cub, is not immediately embraced by Cubs fans, but he is the biggest signing by the team this winter. With the Cubs naming a mascot, the number of teams without one is down to three: Yankees, Dodgers and Angels.

14thThe Yankees send pitcher David Huff to the Giants for cash, but will buy him back from San Francisco on June 11.

15thThe Dodgers and P Clayton Kershaw agree to terms on a 7-year extension that will pay him $215 million. He becomes the first player ever with a $30 million average salary.

16thMLB approves the expansion of instant replay. Managers will have as many as 2 challenges to use on a wide variety of plays. The umpire crew chiefs can also call for a replay starting in the 7th inning if the challenges run out.

The Mariners sign free agent C John Buck to a 1-year deal.

22ndThe Red Sox agree to terms on a 1-year contract with free agent OF Grady Sizemore.

The Yankees agree to terms on a 7-year, $155 million contract with Japanese P Madahiro Tanaka. Initially, his team the Rakuten Eagles refused to release the ace, saying the team was against MLB’s new rule that tops the compensatory posting offer to a Japanese team at $20 million. Previously it was a bidding war. The Golden Eagles stated that they would triple Tanaka’s salary of $4 million for another year, but they backed away and relented.

23rdThe Brewers agree to terms on a 4-year contract with free agent P Matt Garza.

The Rays agree to terms on a 2-year contract with free agent P Grant Balfour.

24thMore of a rental, really. The Giants obtain P David Huff from the Yankees for cash, but sell him back to New York on June 11.

26thUnder a light snowfall at Yankee Stadium, the New York Rangers skate to a 7-3 win over the New Jersey Devils. The Rangers score 6 straight goals before an announced crowd of 50,105.

28thMLB approves a padded protective cap designed to provide protection for pitchers struck by line drives. The first to don the bulky cap will be Padres reliever Alex Torres in a game against the Dodgers on June 21.

29thThe Royals obtain OF Carlos Peguero from the Mariners for a player to be named or cash.
