4thThe Royals sign pitcher Ryan Madsen to a minor league contract. Madsen has not pitched in the majors since 2011 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, but he will have a solid year out of the bullpen.
5thFree agent signings today include: Aaron Harang to a $1 million, one-year contract by the Phillies, his ninth ML team; infielder Cliff Pennington to a $3,275M one year deal by the Diamondbacks; Emilio Bonifacio to a $4M, one-year contract by the White Sox; Nick Hundley to a 2-year $6.25M by the Rockies; A.J. Pierzynski to a one-year agreement by the Braves.
Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz and Craig Biggio are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
9thThe Cubs ink veteran OF Chris Denorfia to a 1-year $2.6M contract. He is a career .272 hitter over parts of 9 seasons, and has a career .339 average at Wrigley. He’ll play in 103 games and hit .269.
10th The Rays trade super utility player Ben Zobrist and SS Yunel Escobar to the Athletics for John Jaso, SS Daniel Robertson and OF Boog Powell.
13thThe Diamondbacks sign 21-year-old free agent Yoan Lopez for $8.27M, having turned down a reported $9M. The Diamondbacks will incur some stiff penalties and will have to pay the same amount of their offer to MLB. In addition, they will be unable to spend $300,000 bonuses on international players for the next signing periods.
14th The Athletics obtain P Tyler Clippard from the Nationals in exchange for SS Yunel Escobar, whom they acquired from the Rays last week.
The Braves send C/3B Evan Gattis and P James Hoyt to the Astros for 3B Rio Ruiz and pitchers Mike Foltynewicz and Andrew Thurman.
16thDavid Price and the Tigers avoid arbitration with a record-setting one-year deal worth $19.75M. The Tigers also avoid arbitration by signing one-year contracts with RH Alfredo Simon and outfielder J.D. Martinez. Right hander Al Alburquerque is Detroit’s only player left in arbitration, and they will reach an agreement next week.
South Korean infielder Jung Ho Kang and the Pirates sign a 4-year $11M contract. It will prove to be a solid pickup as the infielder will split his time between 3B and SS, hitting .287 his first year. However, an injury in Septembere 2015 will slow him and a drunk driving charge in his native South Korea in December 2016 will curtail his 2017 MLB season.
The Giants reach an agreement with free agent Nori Aoki for one year at $4.7M. The outfielder is expected to start along with CF Angel Pagan and RF Hunter Pence.
The White Sox agree to a $9.8M one-year agreement with Jeff Samardzija to avoid arbitration. They also agree to a one-year deal with catcher Tyler Flowers for $2,675,000, who played for them last year.
Milwaukee reaches a one-year agreement with Gerardo Parra for $6,237,500. The Gold Glover will hit .329 for the Brewers before they send him to Baltimore at the trading deadline.
The A’s reach a one-year agreement with Josh Reddick and new third sacker Brett Lawrie to avoid arbitration.
The Dodgers avoid arbitration reaching one-year deals with Kenley Jansen, Juan Nicasio and INF Justin Turner.
Stephen Strasburg and the Nationals reach an agreement for $7.4M for one year. The Nationals also agree to one-year contract with Doug Fister ($11.4M) and Drew Storen ($5.7M).
19th In a major move, the Nationals sign free agent P Max Scherzer to a 7-year deal.
The Cubs obtain OF Dexter Fowler from the Astros in exchange for IF Luis Valbuena and P Dan Strally.
The Brewers send P Yovani Gallardo to the Rangers for IF Luis Sardinas, and pitchers Corey Knebel and Marcos Diplan.
20th The Astros agree to terms on a 1-year contract with free agent OF Colby Rasmus.
22nd The Braves sign free agent OF Jonny Gomes to a 1-year contract.
27th The Pirates send OF Travis Snider to the Orioles for P Stephen Tarpley and a player to be named. Snider hit .264 in 140 games last year for Pittsburgh. He will slump in Baltimore.
The Rangers acquire pitcher Anthony Ranaudo from the Red Sox in exchange for pitcher Robbie Ross Jr.
28th The Marlins sign free agent OF Ichiro Suzuki to a 1-year contract. Ichiro hit .284 last year with the Yankees, but the team declined to pick up the vet for 2015. Ichiro will play in 153 games with the Marlins, hitting just .229.
29th Royals’ OF Alex Gordon receives the 50thHutch Award for outstanding community service.
