5th  Norman Bel Geddes, after designing a 5,000 seat complex for the Dodgers in Vero Beach, FL, states that Walter O’Malley has asked for a stadium design for Brooklyn. It is to have a retractable dome, garage, automatic hotdog vending machines, and artificial turf that can be painted in different colors.

8th  The Cubs play their first game in Mesa, AZ, beating the Indians, 5–4, before 4,000 fans at Rendezvous Park. The Cubs spent the past 30 spring training seasons (1921-51) on Catalina Island before relocating. Mesa community leader Dwight “Pat” Patterson is the moving force in convincing the Cubs to sign a two-year contract to play in Mesa. In 1991, the field at HoHoKam Park will be named after him.

24th Cardinal minor league pitcher Bobby Slaybaugh is hit in the left eye by a line drive, necessitating an operation to remove the eye. Slaybaugh, 17-10 last year at Goldsboro, will pitch briefly in the minors in 1953-54 and then retire.

26th The Cardinals purchase infielder Gene Mauch from the Yankees.

27th At Bradenton, Sam Jethroe’s 7th inning bunt single spoils a combined no-hit bid by the Dodgers Ben Wade and Johnny Schmitz as the Dodgers beat the Braves, 3-0. Attendance is 3,481.
