8thThe Diamondbacks send IF Alex Cintron to the White Sox in exchange for pitcher Jeff Bajenaru.

19thAfter Randy Johnson throws 6 shutout innings in a Grapefruit League game, reliever Al Leiter pitches to one batter before leaving and announcing his retirement.

20thPitching for power. The Reds trade OF Wily Mo Pena to the Red Sox for pitcher Bronson Arroyo. Arroyo, 14-10 in 2005, was slated for the bullpen. Pena, 24, hit .254 last year with 19 homers.

The White Sox and Mariners exchange former first round picks, with Chicago sending OF Joe Borchard to Seattle in exchange for pitcher Matt Thornton.

Alfonso Soriano of the Nationals refuses to take the field when he is listed as the team’s starting LF. He has told the club he wants to remain at 2B. The team says it will place him on the disqualified list if he doesn’t agree to the position change. The suspension is avoided when Soriano takes the field on the 22nd.

Japan defeats Cuba, 10-6, to win the inaugural World Baseball Classic. Pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka is named MVP.

21stThe Padres trade C David Ross to the Reds for pitcher Bobby Basham.

24thAfter first signing with the Red Sox and then allegedly signing with the A’s, Juan Gonzalez is now working out with the Rockies. The Boston Herald calls Gonzalez signing with the A’s “a complete figment of his imagination.”

Tigers pitcher Kenny Rogers makes a plea bargain in which he will attend an anger management class in order to resolve the charges resulting from him knocking down a cameraman late last June.

25thThe Astros placed 1B Jeff Bagwell on the 15 day DL. Bagwell admits that his career could be over. Dr. James Andrews told him that he has numerous degenerative bone spurs in his shoulder which need to be removed, but the doctors thought that, if they did during his last shoulder surgery, that it either slow down or prevent him from recovering.

26thThe Athletics and Diamondbacks exchange pitchers with Brad Halsey going to Oakland and Juan Cruz to Arizona.

29thThe Indians sign CF Grady Sizemore to a 6-year, $23.45 million contract. It is the largest contract ever for a player with less than 2 years experience, breaking the mark held by Nomar Garciaparra.

30thThe Royals trade utilityman Joe McEwing to the Astros for a player to be named.

Major League Baseball announces an investigation into the use of steroids. Former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell is appointed to lead the investigation.

31stThe ball that Babe Ruth hit for his last HR at Yankee Stadium is sold for $86,250 at auction.The ball was hit in an exhibition game off Walter Johnson on August 23, 1942.
