28thIn Venezuela, former major league pitcher Ugueth Urbina is sentenced to 14 years in prison for the attempted murder of five workers on his family’s ranch. Urbina, a former pitcher with the Philadelphia Phillies, is also found guilty of illegal deprivation of liberty and violating a prohibition against taking justice into his own hands during a dispute over a gun on October. 16, 2005.
29thFor the first time in nearly 20 years, a female umpire works a major league exhibition game. Ria Cortesio, set to start the season in Double-A, umps in a game between the Diamondbacks and Cubs in Mesa, AZ. Cortesio is the only female umpire in professional baseball. At 30, she is starting her ninth year overall and fifth in Double-A.
