The move comes after Michael Saunders tore a knee cartilage last week in spring training when he stepped on a lawn sprinkler. He is expected to be out 6 weeks. Viciendo, 25, hit 21 homers for the White Sox last season, hitting .231 with 58 RBIs, but he won’t make it out of spring training before bouncing around.
It doesn’t portend well. In Clearwater, the Phillies open their spring training schedule with a 6-2 loss to the University of Tampa. The college team rallies in the 7thagainst reliever Nefi Ogando, who issues a bases-loaded balk and then serves up a grand slam to Giovanny Alfonzo.
5thIn a split-squad 8-6 win against the Cubs, Giants outfielder Hunter Spence breaks his left forearm when he is hit by a pitch. He will be out 6 to 8 weeks and miss the Opener, snapping his consecutive-games played streak of 383. It is the longest in the majors.
6thThe Rangers sign free agent P Joe Beimel to a 1-year contract.
7thThe Royals sign 1914’s Comeback Player of the Year in the AL, P Chris Young, to a 1-year deal. The former Princeton basketball player will go a solid 11-6 in his season in Kansas City.
17thThe Angels trade C Jackson Williams to the Giants for cash.
Texas pitcher Yu Darvish undergoes Tommy John surgery that will keep him out of action till May 2016. Darvish last pitched August 9, 2014, and had experienced problems pitching in spring training.
21st Cleveland’s Trevor Bauer gives up four triples in an inning during a spring training game. No pitcher has given up three in a frame during a regular season game.
22ndThe Marlins sign 23-year-old Christian Yelich to a seven-year extension worth $49.57M. The smooth-hitting outfielder won a Gold Glove this last season while posting a .284 average with a .362 OBP. He hit .312 from June 7 on. He’ll push his average up to .300 in 2015.
The Rockies unexpectedly release pitcher Jhoulys Chacin, who had been battling shoulder problems. Chacin was 14-10 in 2013, before slumping to 1-7 in 11 games last year. The Indians will sign and release him, and he will have a cup of coffee in Arizona before becoming a free agent in the fall.
23rdThe Reds trade B Neftali Soto to the White Sox for cash.
29thPitching deleted Texas makes a move, acquiring lefty Sam Freeman, 27, from the Cardinals for a player to be named later or cash. Freeman was 2-0 last year with 44 relief appearances.
