1stAroldis Chapman becomes the first ML player to be disciplined for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy. He will be suspended for the first 30 games of the regular season.

6thThe White Sox sign free agent OF Austin Jackson to a one-year contract.

10thThe Orioles sign free agent 1B Pedro Alvarez to a one-year contract.

11th    The Pirates sign free agent 3B David Freese to a one-year contract.

17th    The Reds sign free agent P Alfredo Simon to a one-year contract.

19th    The Cardinals sign free agent SS Ruben Tejada to a one-year contract.

21st     In an historic meeting between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and a Cuban all-star team at Estadio Latinoamericano in Havana, the major leaguers prevail, 4-1.  With President Obama and Raul Castro in attendance, along with baseball luminaries Derek Jeter, Dave Winfield and commissioner Rob Manfred, James Loney supplies the power with a 3-run homer. The Cubans are shut out until the 9thinning when Ruby Reyes homers. It is a festive crowd who cheer when Obama and Castro join in doing ‘the wave,’ but both are gone by the 3rdinning.  Luis Tiant and long-time Cuban star Pedro Luis Lazo throw out the first balls. In a symbolic gesture, Tampa Bay RF Dayron Varona leads off and flies out. Varona defected from Cuba in 2013.  It is the first time since 1999 that a MLB team has played on the island.

26th  The Brewers lose  reliever Will Smith for two months when he tears a ligament in his right knee taking off his spikes after a game. He won’t make an appearance till June and then get traded on July 31stto the Giants.

27th    The Pirates send P Eric O’Flaherty to the Braves for cash.

28thThe Reds claim the 26-year-old second baseman Cincy born Scooter Gennett off of waivers from the Brewers. He had been replaced by Jonathan Villar at second base for the Brewers, who placed Gennett on waivers despite the fact he still had an option. By claiming Gennett, the Reds are responsible for his $2.525-million contract in 2017. He is under team control for two more years. Last season Gennett played 136 games for the Brewers, including 121 starts at second base. He will hit .295 with 27 homers, second on the Reds, while Villar will clock in with a .241 average and 11 homers.

The Lake County Captains of the Class A Midwest League are selling a $20 fish sandwich at Classic Park this season called “The Moby Dick;” it features a 15-inch sesame seed bun, five quarter-pound fish fillets, eight slices of cheese, six ounces of clam strips, one-third pound of french-fries, one cup of coleslaw all topped with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and tartar sauce (as noted by food critic Bill Arnold).

29th    The Rangers swap Bobby Wilson and Myles Jaye to the Tigers for Bryan Holaday.
