1st      The Orioles defeat the Yankees, 7-1, for Buck Showalter’s 1,000thcareer win as an ML manager. Nick Johnson drives in 3 runs with a pair of doubles, his first hits of 2012. With his groundout in the 3rdinning, Johnson sets a record for most at bats without a hit to start an Orioles career as he goes 0-for-26 to start the season; the old record was 25 set by Ron Hansen from 1958-60.

At Fenway, Jarrod Parker goes 6 innings to notch his first ML win as the A’s down the Red Sox, 5-2. The A’s rub salt in the wound, as four players steal 3B in the win. They are the first team since the Expos in 1968 to steal third base four times in a game (as noted by David Feldman).

2ndJered Weaver hurls the second no-hitter of the season as the Angels blank the Twins, 9-0. Weaver fans 9 and walks only one batter. According to pitch tracking company Inside Edge, Jered Weaver throw s75 fastballs, 17 sliders, 15 changeups and 14 curveballs in the no-hitter.

The Cardinals trounce the Pirates, 12-3. Pittsburgh’s AJ Burnett allows all 12 earned runs in 2 2/3 innings, becoming the first pitcher to allow 12 or more earned runs in less than 3 innings.

The Phillies stake Roy Halladay to a 6-0 lead but the ace hands it back when the Braves score 6 in the 6thto tie. Brian McCann’s grand slam is the big blow. The Phils take a 12-8 lead, then watch as the Phils tie that. It is tied at 13 apiece going into extra innings, and the Phils win it, 15-13, on Chipper Jones 2-run walkoff homer in the 11th.

The Orioles shut out the Yankees, 5-0, ending Ivan Nova’s 15-game winning streak, stretching back to last season.

3rdJeff Keppinger has a 2-run homer and a 2-run triple in Tampa Bay’s 4-3 win over Seattle. The victory gives the Rays a sweep of the 4-game series and a 18-8 record, the best in the ML.

Erik Bedard strikes out 11, including 7 straight, as Pittsburgh tops the host Cardinals, 6-3. Pedro Alvarez has a 2-run homer for the Bucs.

Kansas City beats the Yankees, 4-3, but New York’s biggest loss comes before the game even starts. Playing in the outfield during batting practice, Mariano Rivera tears his ACL chasing a ball hit by Jayson Nix, and is carted off. The injury ends his season.

4thMaybe try a box of candy in the clubhouse. The Blue Jays shut out Ervin Santana (0-6) and the Angels, 4-0, making Santana the first pitcher in ML history to lose five straight shutouts in 5 consecutive starts. Santana gives up 3 runs in 8 innings.

A baseball signed by the Beatles after their concert at Shea Stadium on August 15, 1965, is auctioned off for $65,725.

5thFelix Hernandez and Steve Delabar combine to one-hit Minnesota as the Mariners down the Twins, 7-0. Minnesota has totaled just 9 hits over their last 4 games, the fewest for any team over a 4-game stretch in modern ML history.

Geezers grumble. The Braves overcome a 1st-inning grand slam by Michael Cuddyer and two homers by Wilin Rosario to beat the Rockies, 13-9. Jamie Moyer and Chipper Jones get into an argument in the 5thwhen the 49-year-old soft tosser accuses Chipper of stealing signs when he is a baserunner at 2B. Chipper calls him “paranoid” and later says in a tweet from Dave O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution “I mean, dude, we don’t need signs, especially for him. I mean, my goodness, every pitch is 78. Come on.” Jones drives in 5 runs on 3 hits.

6thI’ll take it from here, Skip. The Orioles defeat the Red Sox, 9-6, in 17 innings on a 3-run homer by Adam Jones off outfielder Darnell McDonald. Chris Davis strikes out 5 times and also hits into a double play but he hurls the final 2 innings in relief to get the win. The Sox put 2 runners on in the 17th, but Davis strikes out Adrian Gonzalez and McDonald hits into a DP. The game is the first since 1902 where both pitchers of decision were regular-position players. J.J. Hardy is 5-for-8, including 2 homers off Clay Buchholtz, with 3 runs scored.

The Twins get 5 hits in their 5-2 loss to the Mariners. Minnesota has accumulated just 14 hits over their last 5 games, tying the ML record for fewest hits over a 5-game span.

The Angels edge the Blue Jays, 4-3, as Albert Pujols hits his first homer of the year. He had gone homerless in 33 games and 139 at bats dating to last year.

In the Phillies 9-3 win over the host Nationals, Cole Hamels (4-1) drills Bryce Harper with a pitch in the 1st. Hamel admits to it after the game and says, “It’s just, `Welcome to the big leagues.’” The old-school Hamel thinks that there is over-protection of star rookies in the league, but it will earn him a 5-game suspension. Harper retaliates by taking 3B on a single and then stealing home when Hamel throws to 1B. Philadelphia scores 6 in the 9thagainst Ryan Perry to ice it. Washington loses right fielder Jayson Werth who breaks his left wrist trying to make a sliding catch on Palenco’s line drive.  Steel plates will be inserted in his wrist tomorrow and the outfielder will be out of action until August 2nd.

.    The Giants edge the Brewers, 4-3, in 11 innings as Angel Pagan has a pair of hits for San Francisco to extend his consecutive-game hitting streak to 20. He was hitting .111 before the streak started, Matt Cain strikes out 10 in 7 innings and walks a batter.

Guillermo Mota, a relief pitcher for the Giants, is given a 100-game suspension for testing positive for clenbuteral, banned by MLB. This is his second offense; he received a 50-game suspension in 2006 for testing positive, two weeks after the Mets were eliminated by the Cards.

7thIn Philadelphia, Mets rookie Jordany Valdespin gets his first ML hit, a 3-run pinch homer in the 9thoff ace closer Jonathon Papelbon and the Mets top the Phils, 5-2.

Brandon Snyder homers and drives in 6 runs to pace the Rangers to a 14-3 win over the Orioles.

Will Middlebrooks homers down each line and David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia also leave the yard as the Red Sox end a 5-game loss streak by beating Kansas City, 11-5. Middlebrooks is the first player in Sox history to have an extra-base hit in each of his first 4 games

8thThe Rangers trounce the Orioles, 10-3, as Josh Hamilton becomes the 16thplayer in ML history to hit 4 homers in a game. Hamilton adds a double, going 5-for-5 with 8 RBIs. His 18 total bases sets a new AL record, falling one shy of Shawn Green’s ML mark.

Ryan Dempster tosses seven innings of one-run ball against the Braves, and actually raises his MLB-leading ERA to 1.02. Kerry Wood relieves and allows 2 runs to take the loss as the Cubs lose, 3-1.

At Oakland, the Blue Jays cough up a one-run lead in the 9thas the A’s plate 5 runs to win, 7-3. The newly signed Brandon Inge hits a walkoff grand slam, off Francisco Cordero.

9thThe Reds edge the Brewers, 2-1, to give Dusty Baker his 1,500thcareer win as manager. He becomes only the 4thperson in ML history to amass 1,500 victories as well as 1,500 hits as a player. The others to do so were Fred Clarke, Lou Piniella and Joe Torre.

10thThe Orioles edge the Rangers, 6-5, in the first game of a twinbill. Baltimore becomes the first AL team—and just the 4thML team—to ever start a game with 3 consecutive homers. Ryan Flaherty, J.J. Hardy and Nick Markakis all connect in the bottom of the 1stinning. Adam Jones and Wilson Betemit also homer as the Orioles become the third team in history to have 5 or more hits in a game, all of them homers. Colby Lewis surrendered all 5 blast for Texas, becoming the first pitcher in ML history to give up 5 or more homers while recording 10 or more strikeouts in a game. Lewis fans 12 Orioles in his 7 innings of work. Texas wins game 2 by a 7-3 score. Josh Hamilton hits his 15thhomer.

11thThe Athletics clobber the Tigers, 11-4. Brandon Inge knocks in 4 runs for the 4thtime in the last 5 games, becoming just the second player in ML history to accomplish the feat. Lou Gehrig did so in 1931.

The Rangers defeat the Angels, 10-3, with the help of Josh Hamilton’s 2 homers. Hamilton has hit 8 homers over the last 5 games, one shy of the mark for a 5-game span set by Shawn Green in 2002.

In a 7-5 loss to the Red Sox, the first 31 Cleveland batters hit left-handed. Manager Manny Acta has a batting order of seven lefties and two switch-hitters against righty starter Clay Buchholz, who pitches into the seventh inning. When reliever Rich Hill enters the game, Cleveland sends up switch-hitter Carlos Santana, who bats right.

The Reds release veteran reliever Ron Mahay, who had been signed in January to a minor league contract. He is the last of the 1995 replacement players.  Mahay’s last ML appearance was August 2010 with Minnesota.  Mahay came up to the majors as an outfielder for the Red Sox in 1995 and returned in 1997 as a pitcher.

12thIn an 8-2 Brewers victory at Milwaukee, little-used Eddie Maysonet lights the fireworks with his second ML homer, a grand slam off Chicago reliever Chris Volstad. Volstad grades the sinker “not a terrible pitch.” The Cubs are 0-7 when Volstad pitches, 13-13 when he does not.

13thThe Reds defeat the Nationals, 9-6, on Joey Votto’s walk-off grand slam off Henry Rodriguez. Votto clobbers 3 homers and a double and drives in 6 runs.

The Red Sox rout the Indians, 12-1. Boston’s rookie 3B Will Middlebrooks has an RBI single and a solo HR to give him 4 homers and 13 ribbies in his first 10 ML games. He is the 3rdplayer in history to do so, joining Mark Quinn (1999) and Alvin Davis (1984).

At Marlins Park, the Mets score 2 in the 9thto take a 4-2 lead, but the Marlins come back with 6 runs to win, 8-4. Mike Stanton clubs a walkoff grand slam, off Manny Acosta, for the win.

15thAfter Alfredo Soriano ties the game at 6 apiece with a 9thinning homer, his first of the year, the Cards plate the winning tally when Matt Holliday scores his third run on Molina’s single to give St. Louis a 7-6 victory.

Zach Greinke shuts down the Mets as the Brewers win, 8-0. After Rickie Weeks hits a solo HR in the 7th, D.J. Carresco hits Ryan Braun with a pitch.  Mets manager Terry Collins then removes his star David Wright from the game, saying afterwards, “One of the unwritten rules is if you hit my guy, I’m hitting your guy. They’re not hitting my guy tonight.”

Austin Jackson and Ryan Raburn each hit 3-run homers and Miguel Cabrera adds a 2-run shot as the Tigers whip division rival White Sox, 10-8. A.J. Pierzynski is 5-for-5 for Chicago.

Following a pre-game “Thank You, Wake” tribute to retiring knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, Josh Beckett throws 7 scoreless innings as the Red Sox 5-0 win over the Mariners. Beckett hasn’t pitched in 18 days after being scratched from a start because of soreness in his shoulder. He played golf the next day, incurring the wrath of Red Sox Nation, but they are quiet today.

16thThe Rockies defeat the Diamondbacks, 6-1. Colorado pitcher Jamie Moyer drives in a run, becoming the oldest player in ML history to do so at age 49.

At Wrigley, the Phillies put the game away with a 6-run explosion in the 9thto beat the Cubs, 9-2. A pinch grand slam by Hector Luna, off Michael Bowden is the big blow.

17thDrew Hutchison allows one run in 6 innings as the Blue Jays trip the visiting Yankees, 4-1. Rookie Yan Gomes starts at 3B in place of the suspended Brett Lawrie, and has two hits. He is the first Brazilian to play ML baseball. With the loss, the Yankees and Red Sox find themselves as the two worst teams in the AL East, a position they have not held since October 1, 1992, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

The buzz at Coors Field was less about the Rockies game and more about the swarm of bees that settled into the camera bay next to the Rockies dugout in the 5thinning. They remain there until a beekeeper arrives an inning later and vacuumed them up. Meanwhile, the Rockies blow a 4-1 lead to lose to the Diamondbacks, 9-7, when Justin Upton hits a 2-run, 2-out homer off closer Rafael Bentencourt in the 9th. A Diamondback fan is ejected from the game in the 5thfor tossing Jordan Pacheco’s homer back onto the field.

Brandon Beachy throws his first shutout as the Braves whip the Marlins, 7-0. He lowers his league-leading ERA to 1.33.

18thJustin Verlander comes within 2 outs of his third no-hitter as he hurls a one-hitter against the Pirates, winning, 6-0. Josh Harrison’s single with one out in the 9this Pittsburgh’s only safety.

At Wrigley, Gordon Beckham hits a tie-breaking solo homerun in the 8th, off starter Jeff Samardzija to give the White Sox a 3-2 win over the Cubs.  Kerry Wood relieves and strikes out Dayan Viciedo, the only batter he faces. He is then replaced and is hugged by his son as he comes off the field. After the game the popular Wood announces his retirement.

Kevin Millwood tosses his first shutout in nearly 9 years, allowing 2 hits, as Seattle beats the Rockies, 4-0.

In Toronto, J.P. Arencibia belts 2 homers and drives in 6 runs, and the Jays 9thspot hitter Rajai Davis knocks in 4 runs as the Blue Jays belt the Mets, 14-5.

20thThe Tigers edge the Pirates, 4-3. Detroit hurler Max Scherzer fans 15 Pittsburgh batters.

     The Nationals beat up Bruce Chen (4-1) and top the Orioles, 9-3. In the 4thinning, the Nationals battery of Jesus Flores and Stephen Strasberg hit back-to-back homers off Chen. For Strasberg it is his first ML dinger.  He goes to 4-1, striking out 8 in 5 innings.

A jersey worn by Babe Ruth sells at auction for $4.4 million. It is a record for any item of sports memorabilia.

21stThe Reds beat the Braves, 4-1. Mike Leake, Zack Cozart and Drew Stubbs homer in succession for Cincinnati in the 4thinning.

22ndThe Angels shut out the Athletics, 5-0, on a combined one-hitter by CJ Wilson and Ernesto Frieri. Cliff Pennington’s one-out single in the 5this Oakland’s only safety.

Boston reclaims sole possession of the basement in the AL East, losing, 4-1, to the Orioles. Steve Tolleson and Wilson Betemit each hit 2-run homers for the AL East leaders.

25thThe Rangers trounce the Blue Jays, 14-3. Nelson Cruz drives in 8 runs for the victors. It is the 2ndtime in his career that he has had 8 RBIs in a game. Only 3 other players in ML history have accomplished that feat: Jimmie Foxx, Dave Kingman and George Selkirk.

In Boston,  Red Sox pitching great Luis Tiant and Jim Lonborg each conduct the Boston Pops orchestra during “Red Sox Night” as part of the Pops “City of Champions” series.

26thThe Rangers edge the Blue Jays, 8-7, in 13 innings. Nelson Cruz, Yorvit Torrealba and Mitch Moreland hit consecutive four baggers for Texas in the 6thinning.

27thThe Rockies clout 5 homeruns off Reds P Mat Latos and Cincinnati hits 4 of Jamie Moyer in the Reds 7-5 win. It is the first time in ML history that one pitcher allows 5 or more homers in a game while another surrenders at least 4.

Yadier Molina starts the scoring with a 1stinning grand slam off Roy Halladay as St. Louis defeats the visiting Phillies, 8-3. It is the second grand slam that Halladay has served up this year.

The Dodgers defeat the Astros, 5-1, as Jerry Hairston Jr. goes 5-for-5 including a double.

28thThe White Sox edge the Rays, 2-1. Chris Sale fans 15 Tampa Bay batters in just 7 1/3 innings of work.

In the middle of a 10-3 loss to the Mariners, the Rangers announce the signing of free agent pitcher Roy Oswalt to a minor league contract.

The Cubs snap a 12-game losing streak by beating the Padres, 11-7, at Wrigley. The Bruins get 3 RBIs each from Ian Stewart, Starlin Castro and Alfonso Soriano, while the Pads get a pair of homers from Chase Headley.  The 12-game losing streak was only the seventh of 12 games or more for the franchise since 1876.

29thAt Target Field, Josh Willingham hits a three-run walkoff homer for a 3-2 Twins win over the Athletics.

Chicago’s Phillip Humber wins for the first time since his perfect game in April, beating the Rays, 7-2. Hideki Matsui homers in his debut game with the Rays.

Brett Lawrie is 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs as the Blue Jays beat the Orioles, 8-6.  Adam Jones does the same for the Bird, counting among his hits a pair of homers. He extends his consecutive game hitting streak to 20.

30thThe Mariners score 8 runs in both the 2ndand 3rdinnings on their way to a 21-8 win over the Rangers. Seattle becomes the 7thteam in ML history—and the 4thsince 1900—with consecutive 8+ run innings. Former Ranger Justin Smoak has a pair of 3-run homers and a double, Jesus Montero has a homer and scores 4 runs, and Kyle Seager plates 4 runs.

The Rockies trounce the Astros, 13-5, as Carlos Gonzalez clouts 3 homers in his last 3 at bats for Colorado, and Michael Cuddyer adds a grand slam. Gonzalez’s feat is the 17th time it has happened at Coors Field since the park opened in 1995, more than any other major-league ballpark in that span; Wrigley Field is next with 15 three-homer games.

The Rockies part company with Jamie Moyer designating the 49-year-old for assignment. Moyer will be signed and released by Baltimore, then signed and released by the Blue Jays without appearing in a game for either.

31stThe Rockies defeat the Astros, 11-5. Carlos Gonzalez’s 1st-inning homer is his 4thhomer in consecutive plate appearances, tying the ML mark for consecutive four baggers. He is intentionally walked in the 2nd, doubles in the 4th, and singles in the 8th.

The Orioles announce that Nick Markakis will have surgery on his right wrist for an injury that they believe occurred when he slid into a base more than a week ago.  He will miss six weeks of action.
