1st  The Yankees edge the Red Sox, 3-2, with the help of Alex Rodriguez’s 8th-inning pinch homer off Junichi Tazawa. It is the 660thhomer of his career, tying him with Willie Mays on the all-time list.

With the Orioles playing as the home team in Tampa, the Rays win, 2-0, behind Alex Colome and 4 relievers. The game was moved from Baltimore in the wake of rioting that broke out there after the funeral of Freddy Gray, who died in police custody.

Matt Harvey pitches 7 scoreless innings, outdueling Max Scherzer and giving the Mets a 4-0 win over the Nationals. Harvey is the first Mets pitcher to win his first 5 starts in a season since Pedro Martinez, in 2006. Scherzer strikes out 10, but when he leaves in the 8thDaniel Murphy hits a bases-loaded double.

2ndThe Giants defeat the Angels, 5-4, with the last out of the game being made when an Angel runner is hit by a batted ball. It is the first time a game has ended this way in nearly 5 years. Almost 6 hours later, the feat is accomplished again, this time with a Diamondbacks runner hit by a batted ball to end the Dodgers’ 6-4 win over Arizona.

At Turner Field, the Reds whip the host Braves, 8-4 behind Jason Marquis (3-1). Jay Bruce has a pair of triples and Cozart hits a 2-run homer in the 9th.  Brandon Phillips has a steal as the Reds have now stolen record 29 bases in their first 30 attempts,

3rdThe Brewers win today, 5-3, over the Rockies but it is not enough to save manager Ron Roenicke’s job. Former Milwaukee player Craig Counsell is hired as the new skipper and the Brewers will win tomorrow for him.

In Los Angeles, Yasmani Grandal hits a walkoff homer in the 13thto give the Dodgers a 1-0 win over Arizona. Grandal came into the game as a pinch hitter in the 10th, drawing a walk, and throws out a runner at the plate on an errant pitch in the top of the 13th.

The Cardinals edge the Pirates, 3-2, on Kolten Wong’s 14th-inning walkoff homerun. St. Louis becomes just the 3rdteam in ML history to sweep a series of at least 3 games with each contest going into extra innings. The 1925 Reds and 1972 Tigers also accomplished the feat.

Trevor Plouffe hits a grand slam and drives in 5 runs to power the Twins to a 13-3 win and a sweep of the White Sox.

Evan Gattis homers twice, his first a 3-run shot in the 1st, and his second giving the Astros a 7-6 lead and final score against Seattle. Houston has now won 10 straight.

4thThe Nationals defeat the Marlins, 6-4, as Yunel Escobar goes 5-for-5.

5thThe Angels edge the Mariners, 5-4, on rookie Carlos Perez’s walkoff HR. Perez becomes the 4thplayer in ML history to hit a walkoff homer in his first ML game. Others to accomplish the feat were Billy Parker (1971), Josh Bard (2002) and Miguel Cabrera (2003).

Bartolo Colon pitches the Mets to a 3-2 victory over the Orioles. The rotund Colon becomes the first pitcher in ML history to record wins against one team for 7 different clubs. He also defeated the Orioles while pitching for the Indians, Angels, Red Sox, White Sox, Yankees and Athletics.

6thThe Nationals defeat the Marlins, 7-5, as Bryce Harper clouts 3 monster homers, each on second pitches from Tom Koehler, and drives in 5 runs.  He is the youngest player to accomplish the feat in 45 years.

Eddie Rosario homers on the first pitch he sees in the majors, and Edward Escobar homers and drives in 5 runs as the Twins swamp the A’s, 13-0. Rosario is the 29throokie to homer on his first pitch.

Mark Buehrle pitches the Blue Jays to a 5-1 victory over the Yankees, racking up his first win over the pinstripers since April 10, 2004. His curious record against New York now stands at 2-14. CC Sabathia (0-5) takes the loss.

The Dodgers rout the Brewers by a score of 14-4. Yasmani Grandal hits a pair of 3-run homers and drives in 8 runs.

8thThe Nationals defeat the Braves, 9-2. Bryce Harper hits a pair of HRs to tie a ML record with 5 over 2 games. He becomes the youngest player to accomplish the feat.

9thThe Nationals edge the Braves, 8-6, on Bryce Harper’s walkoff homer. It is his 6thhomer over the past 3 games to tie a ML record, and he is the youngest player ever to do that.

The Pirates celebrate Mother’s Day one day early with the mother of all pitchers’ best friends­­–the triple play–but this time it is a historic one, the first 4-5-4 triple play in the Major Leagues. With Cardinals on 2B and 3B and none out in the 2nd inning of a 7-5 win at PNC Park, Pirates second baseman Neil Walker snags Yadier Molina’s liner within feet of 2B, left vacant by baserunner Jason Heyward, tags the bag and throws to 3B.

10thThe Angels one-hit the Astros, 3-1. Jason Castro’s 7th-inning single off Garrett Richards is Houston’s only safety.

Michael Pineda fans 16 Baltimore batters as the Yankees defeat the Orioles, 6-2.

The Mariners beat the Athletics, 4-3. Along the way, Felix Hernandez strikes out the 2,000th batter of his career, becoming the 4th-youngest pitcher to reach that plateau.

11thThe Nationals beat the Diamondbacks, 11-1, as Yunel Escobar goes 5-for-5. It is his second 5-hit game this month.

12thThe Cubs defeat the Mets, 6-1, to ruin Noah Syndergaard’s ML debut. The blue-chip Syndergaard, batting in the 8thspot for New York, becomes just the 3rdpitcher over the past 100 years to make his debut in a non-DH game and not bat in the 9thspot in the batting order. The others were Jack Urban in 1957 and Yoslan Herrera in 2008.

The Dodgers crush the Marlins, 11-1, as Andre Ethier goes 5-for-5 for LA, including a homer. Mike Bolsinger picks up his first win as a Dodger. He was 1-6 last year at Arizona.

13thCorey Kluber (1-5) fans 18 Cardinals and holds St. Louis to a single hit in 8 innings as the Indians shut out the Redbirds, 2-0. Kluber was pulled before the 9thhaving thrown 113 pitches. Jhonny Peralta’s single with 2 outs in the 7thinning is the Cardinals’ only safety. Kluber is the fifth pitcher (Tiant, Clemens, Randy Johnson, Kerry Wood) to strikeout 18 batters without issuing a walk. He ties Randy Johnson’s strikeout record of most strikeouts in a start lasting less than 9 innings.

Michael Taylor, who replaces Bryce Harper after the star and manager Matt Williams are ejected in the 7th, belts a grand slam in the 9thto lift Washington to a 9-6 win over Arizona. It is Taylor’s first career at bat with the sacks full.

15thThe Indians defeat the Rangers, 8-3. Adrian Beltre hits the 400thhomer of his career, becoming the 52ndplayer to reach that plateau. The 53rdtime will happen tomorrow.

The Dodgers beat the Rockies, 6-4. Kenley Jansen fans 4 Rockies in the 8thinning, the 72ndtime this has occurred in ML history. This will happen again tomorrow.

At Wrigley, the Cubs win a wild game from the Pirates, 11-10, on a botched fly ball. With one out and the bases loaded in the 11th, Matt Szczur hits a fly ball to RF Gregory Polanco who throws out Starlin Castro trying to score. The same setup occurs in the 12thbut this time Polanco stumbles and misses the routine fly ball and Castro scores. Kris Bryant has a homer and 4 RBI to help Chicago take a 10-5 lead into the 8thinning.

16thThe Mets score 10 runs in the 4thinning on their way to a 14-1 victory over the Brewers. Shortstop Wilmer Flores, batting 9th, has a grand slam in the frame and is the first NL starting position player batting 9thto hit a grand slam.

The Tigers edge the Cardinal, 4-3, in 10 innings as Miguel Cabrera hits the 400thhomer of his ML career. He now has 4 homers in 3 games.

Jace Peterson hits his first ML homer, a grand slam, and Atlanta overcomes a tape measure shot by Giancarlo Stanton to beat the Marlins, 5-3. Stanton hits his third long homer in 3 games, a solo into the upper deck in center field. A spectator makes a one hand grab 5 rows in front of the 502-foot sign.

Brandon Crawford has a grand slam and 6 RBI and Hunter Pence scores 3 runs in his first game after recovering from a broken forearm as the Giants whip the Reds, 11-2.  Pence, who broke his arm in spring training when hit by a pitch, singles in his first 2 at bats against Mike Leake.

The Rockies down the Dodgers, 7-1, though Sergio Santos fans 4 Colorado batters in the 8thinning. It is the first time in ML history that the trick has been accomplished in consecutive games.

17thMoments after the Marlins are nearly no-hit by Shelby Miller, the team fires manager Mike Redmond. General Manager Dan Jennings takes over as skipper. Miller is one out away from a no-hitter when Justin Bour singles in Miami’s 6-0 loss to Atlanta.  The Braves sweep the 3-game series.

Noel Syndergaard baffles the Brewers to win his first ML game as the Mets win, 6-1. With a few fans holding up replicas of Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer, the 6’6” Syndergaard allows one run on Ryan Braun’s single.

Seven teams record shutouts, tying for the second highest shutout total on any one day in ML history. Eight shutouts were recorded on June 4, 1972.

19thThe Cubs trade catcher Welington Castillo to the Mariners for P Yoervis Medina. Castillo will be traded again in two weeks.

Yankees pitcher Chase Whitley, who left a game on May 14thwith an elbow injury, undergoes Tommy John surgery today and will be out for the year.

The Nationals edge the Yankees, 8-6, in 10 innings on Ryan Zimmerman’s walkoff HR. Bryce Harper also homers for Washington, becoming just the third under-23-years-old player in ML history to reach 15 HRs in 40 or fewer games. Eddie Mathews hit his 15thin the Braves’ 40thgame in 1953 and Harmon Killebrew in the Senators’ 37thgame in 1959.  Nationals starter Gio Gonzales gets the Yankee batters to make their first 11 outs on grounders.

The Brewers pound the Tigers, 8-1. Ryan Braun, Adam Lind and Aramis Ramirez hit back-to-back-to-back homers for Milwaukee in the 3rdinning.

The Twins build an early 7-0 lead against Francisco Liriano (1-4) and hang on for an 8-5 win against the host Pirates. Pedro Alvarez launches a 461-foot homer that lands in a boat docked along the Allegheny River beyond the RF stands. He is just the third player to reach the river on the fly since PNC Park opened in 2001.

20thAt PNC, Joe Mauer hits his first homer of the season, a 13thinning solo shot, to give the Twins a 4-3 win over the host Pirates.

21stIn a matchup of aces, Madison Bumgarner bests Clayton Kershaw as the Giants beat the Dodgers, 4-0. Bumgarner has the game’s only homer, a 4thinning shot off Kershaw.

23rdThe Rangers score 10 runs in the 3rdinning on their way to a 15-4 win over the Yankees. After 2 scoreless innings, CC Sabathia gives up 6 runs before being lifted.  Yankee DH/1B Garrett Jones gets the last two outs in the 9thin his first-ever pitching appearance

The Dodgers shut out the Padres, 2-0, behind Mike Bolsinger. Bolsinger yields a leadoff single to Yangervis Solarte, who is erased on a DP, and doesn’t allow another baserunner in his 8 innings of work. Kenley Jansen registers a perfect 9thinning to complete the 1-hitter.

Lance McCullers induces a triple play in the 5thinning started by an Ian Kinsler grounder and he earns his first ML victory as the Astros tip the Tigers, 3-2. It is Houston’s first triple play in 11 years.

The Marlins edge the Orioles, 1-0, in 13 innings as Martin Prado knocks in the winning run. O’s reliever Brian Matusz is ejected in the 12thfor having a sticky substance on his non-pitching arm. He’ll get an 8-game suspension. Marlins manager Dan Jenkins earns his first win in 6 games.

Cincy manager Bryan Price is ejected before the first pitch and then Corey Kluber throws 8 innings as Cleveland hands Cincinnati its 7thloss in a row, 3-2.

24thThe Pirates defeat the Mets, 9-1. They become the first team in ML history–since 1900–to have starting pitchers win 3 straight games in a series, recording double digits in strikeouts in each game.

Justin Upton hits a 1st-inning grand slam and drives in 6 runs to back James Shields (6-0) as the Padres beat the host Dodgers, 11-3.

The Yanks coulda used him. The Yankees retire Bernie Williams #41 before the game, but then play starts and the Rangers sweep, 5-2. They score 30 runs on 40 hits in three games, with Prince Fielder driving in 9 runs. Dellin Betances pitches a scoreless 9thto  extend his streak to 24 scoreless innings to start the season.

25thThe Yankees trounce the first-place Royals, 14-1. Brett Gardner accounts for 4 of the New Yorkers’ eight 1st-inning runs with a 3-run homer and scoring twice. Chase Headley adds a 2-run homer in the 1stand Brian McCann finishes the scoring with a 3-run blast. Jeremy Guthrie becomes the first starting pitcher in ML history to surrender at least 4 HRs and allow 11 or more runs in a game in which he recorded 3 outs or less.

26thThe Dodgers shut out the Braves, 8-0, behind Clayton Kershaw. It is Kershaw’s 29th consecutive start at home in which he has allowed 3 or fewer runs. It is the second-longest such streak in ML history, trailing only Doc White’s 32-start streak in 1905-06.

Kyle Seager belts a grand slam in the 8thinning and follows with a game-winning four bagger off Brad Boxberger in the 10thas the Mariners beat the Rays, 7-6.

Josh Hamilton hits a 3-run HR in the 9th, off David Robertson, to cap a dominant effort and lead the Jays to a 10-9 win over the White Sox. Hamilton is 4-for-4 with a walk and 5 runs scored. His first hit is a solo homer in the 1st.

27thThe Dodgers trade 36-year-old 3B Juan Uribe to Atlanta in a six-player deal. Los Angeles includes pitcher Chris Withrow. Atlanta sends infielder Alberto Callaspo, lefties Eric Stults and Ian Thomas, and minor leaguer Juan Jaime. Uribe became expendable after losing his starting job.

It’s hammer time as Noel Syndergaard pitches 7.1 innings and is 3-for-3 at the plate in the Mets 7-0 win over the Phillies. One of his hits is a homer to dead center field, the first homer by a Mets pitcher in 3 years, Lucas Duda adds 2 homers and Michael Cuddyer one.

Curious. The Mets sell Kirk Nieuwenhuis to the Angels, who will put the slugger on the waiver list in two weeks after he goes 3-for-22. The Mets will claim him back on June 12th.

28thThe Red Sox beat the Texas Rangers, 5-1, as Eduardo Rodriguez, 22, throws 7.2 scoreless innings to become the youngest Sox pitcher to debut with a road win since 1967. Billy Rohr won his debut on April 14, 1967 at Yankee Stadium. Rodriguez is the youngest Sox pitcher to debut on the road since Clemens in 1985.

Commissioner Rob Manfred meets with Denis Coderre, the mayor of Montreal, who is seeking to have three or four regular-season games played in his city in 2016. Coderre says a half dozen teams have expressed interest.

30thThe Angels defeat the Tigers, 8-6. Detroit’s Shane Greene becomes the first pitcher in ML history to surrender 5 homeruns in less than 2 innings of work, as Mike Trout, Cole Calhoun, Matt Joyce, Carlos Perez and Albert Pujols all go deep off him.

31st  White Sox pitcher John Danks goes the distance in shutting out the host Astros, 6-0. Each team makes 10 hits, with five of the Houston hits good for extra bases. Houston’s Jonathan Villar is thrown out at the plate in the 5thtrying to stretch a triple into an inside-the-park homer. His shot to CF goes over the head of Adam Eaton and rolls to the wall.

Martin Maldonado belts a one-out 2-run homer in the bottom of the 17thas the Brewers outlast the Diamondbacks, 7-6. Maldonado slides home as his teammates celebrate the end of a 7-game losing streak.

With the help of a three-ball walk to Joey Votto that goes unnoticed on the field, the Reds rally for 6 runs in the 7thand beat the Nationals, 8-2.  A statistician on the media level notices the walk on a 3-2 count, but it is missed by both players and umpires.

Bartolo Colon hits a run-scoring double to give the Mets a 2-1 lead as he pitches 7 innings against the Marlins in a 4-3 win. It is his second extra-base hit in his 18-year career. He wins his 8thto tie for the ML lead.
