The last pitcher with so few outs and allowing so many hits with no K’s was Pittsburgh’s Erv Brame, in 1931 (May 24).
3rdThe Braves limit the Mets to one hit in their 3-0 victory. Matt Wisler hurls 8 shutout innings, allowing only a 5th-inning single to Asdrubal Cabrera.
Jake Arrieta (6-0) dominates the Pirates, allowing 2 hits in 7 innings, as the Cubs win, 7-1, in Pittsburgh. He lowers his ERA to 0.84. The Cubs have won each of Arrieta’s last 19 starts. He is the first Cubs pitcher to win each of his first six starts since Three-Fingered Brown won his first 11 in 1908.
The Giants Jeff Samardzija goes 8 innings to win his 3rdstraight, beating the Reds, 3-1, as the Giants score 2 runs in the 8th. The Reds bullpen allows a run for the 21stconsecutive game, topping the mark set by the 2013 Rockies (Elis Sports Bureau). Their scored-upon streak will reach 23 games.
The Tigers trade C Bobby Wilson back to the Rangers for minor leaguer Chad Bell. Wilson will move on to Tampa Bay on waivers in August.
Pablo Sandoval undergoes shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum and will miss the rest of the Red Sox season.

5thColorado scores 13 runs in the 5th inning on their way to a 17-7 victory over the Giants. San Francisco had been victim to the Mets 12-run inning only 6 days previously. The Giants become only the third team in ML history to allow innings of 12 or more runs twice in a season. The 1894 Boston Beaneaters and 2005 Tampa Bay Devil Rays also were victimized in this fashion.
7thThe Mets defeat the Padres, 6-3, behind Bartolo Colon. To the delight of fans and teammates, Colon also homers to become the oldest player in ML history to hit his first career homer.
The Brewers score 7 runs in the top of the 10th inning and go on to beat the Reds, 13-7. Aaron Hill hits 3 HRs, including a 10th-inning grand slam, for Milwaukee and drives in 7 runs.
Clayton Kershaw strikes out 7 without issuing a walk in the Dodgers 6-2 win over the Blue Jays. It is his third straight start with 10 or more Ks and no walks. The only other pitchers to accomplish the feat are Kershaw himself and Chris Archer, both in 2015.
8thThe Cubs edge the Nationals, 4-3, on Javier Baez’s walk-off HR in the 13th inning. Jake Arrieta surrenders 3 runs in the contest, extending his streak of starts without allowing more than 3 runs to 27 games in a row. It is the longest such streak in the ML since 1893. Bryce Harper sets a modern ML record in the game by making 7 plate appearances without an at bat. He walks 6 times and is also hit by a pitch. His streak of 12 straight plate appearances without an at bat is also a modern record. With Harper walking six times, Ryan Zimmerman leaves ML record 14 men on base and makes the final out in four innings.
The Orioles beat the visiting A’s, 11-3, as Manny Machado has a 2-run homer and a grand slam.
9thAt Fenway, Jackie Bradley, Jr. hits a grand slam and drives in 6 runs to pace the Red Sox to a 14-7 drumming of the Athletics. He’s not through yet.
Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto loses a homerun when he passes a runner on the basepath in Miami’s 4-1 win over the Brewers. The play occurs in the 2ndinning when Realmuto hits a drive that just clear the CF fence. Teammate Marcell Ozuna, a runner at 1B, returns to the bag in case Realmuto’s fly is caught. Realmuto passes Ozuna, though no call is made. Upon review, the HR is nullified.
At Arlington, Todd Frazier has 4 hits, including a solo homer and a 12th-inning tie-breaking grand slam, as the White Sox win over the Rangers, 8-4. Frazier has 6 RBIs.
10thThe Yankees defeat the Royals, 10-7, despite 3 HRs by Lorenzo Cain and a 2-run shot by Cheslor Cuthbert. New York has 13 hits but no homers.
Travis Shaw homers and drives in 5 runs as the host Red Sox continue to beat up on the A’s, winning, 13-5.
11thThe Angels acquire P Jhoulys Chacin from the Braves for minor league P Adam McCreery.
At Fenway, Jackie Bradley, Jr. has his second 6-RBI game in three days as he connects for two homers to beat the A’s, 13-3. He has 13 RBIs in the 3-game set with Oakland.
Max Scherzer ties the record for strikeouts in a 9-inning game by fanning 20 in the Nationals 3-2 victory over the Tigers.
Houston edges the Indians, 5-3, when Marwin Gonzales hits a walkoff 2-run homer in the 16th.
The Mets edge the Dodgers, 4-3, behind Noah Syndergaard. Syndergaard accounts for all of New York’s runs with a pair of homers. Thor is the first pitcher to homer twice in a game since Micah Owings for the Diamondbacks in 2007.

14th The Twins trade reliever J.R. Graham to the Yankees for a player to be named.
15th The Athletics edge the Rays, 7-6. The tying and winning runs come on Danny Valencia’s third HR of the day, in the 9th inning. Valencia drives in 5 runs.
In a brawl-filled game at Arlington, Ian Desmond hits a go-ahead 3-run homer in the 7thto give the Rangers a 7-6 win over the Blue Jays. Earlier, Jays coach Tim Lieper and manager John Gibbons are each thumbed in separate arguments, but the real fireworks start in the 8thafter Jose Bautista is hit by a pitch. A hard and late slide into 2B by Bautista provokes a fight with Roughned Odor and the gloves drop. In all, 14 players will be disciplined, including Odor who gets an 8-game suspension and a $5,000 fine for punching Bautista in the jaw. Jays pitcher Jesse Chavez gets a 3-game suspension for hitting Prince Fielder with a pitch following the brawl. Gibbons gets 3 games for inciting a riot after returning to the field after he had been thumbed out. Bautista gets a 1-game suspension for post-game remarks.
17th The Athletics beat the Rangers, 8-5, as Khris Davis hits 3 HRs, including an ultimate walkout grand slam. He has 6 RBIs.
The Dodgers defeat the Angels, 5-1, as Clayton Kershaw strikes out 11 without walking a batter. It is the sixth consecutive start in which Kershaw has fanned at least 10 batters without issuing a walk for a modern ML record.

The Rangers announce plans for a new retractable-roof stadium to be opened in 2021. The $1 billion project will be built in partnership with the city of Arlington and it will replace Globe Life Park, built in 1994.

21stIn a 5-4 loss to the Tigers, Tampa Bay CF Kevin Kiermaier breaks his glove hand trying to make a diving catch in the 5thinning. The Gold Glove outfielder will be out of action till mid July but will still win his second straight Gold Glove.
Making his first start in a month, Joe Kelly pitches no-hit ball into the 7thas the Red Sox pound the visiting Indians, 9-1. Kelly gets support from Mookie Betts, who has a grand slam and solo homer, and Jackie Bradley, Jr., who extends his consecutive game hitting streak to 26 games.
22nd The Dodgers defeat the Padres, 9-5, in 17 innings. Yasiel Puig’s 2-run single with the bases loaded breaks a tie in the 17th. In the bottom of the 17th, the Padres put a runner on when, with 2 outs, the sprinklers come on in right field. Wil Myers then makes the last out.
The Mets edge the Brewers, 3-1, behind Noah Syndergaard. Syndergaard strikes out 11 Brewers without allowing a walk or earned run. He becomes the 4th P in the earned run era to have consecutive starts without allowing an earned run or walk, and fanning at least 10 batters. Others to accomplish the feat are Nolan Ryan (1987), Jose Fernandez (2014), and Clayton Kershaw (3 in a row in 2015).
Madison Bumgarner pitches into the 8thand has a run-scoring double as the Giants edge the Cubs, 1-0.
Jackie Bradley, Jr. extends his consecutive game batting streak to 27 games as the Red Sox beat the Indians, 5-2. David Ortiz is 4-for-4 and almost has his first cycle when he lines a hit in the 8th. He said he had been thinking about a triple to complete a cycle as he rounded 1B but the ball bounced into the bullpen for a ground-rule double.
23rd The Royals defeat the Twins, 10-4, as Salvador Perez goes 5-for-5 for KC, including a double and triple.
Pirate starter Ryan Vogelsong is carted off the field after being struck in the face with a pitch from Rockies starter Jordan Lyles in a 6-3 Pittsburgh home win. Vogelsong will be out of action till August 4.
Bartolo Colon allows one run in 7 innings and the Mets club three homers, including a 3-run homer by David Wright to beat the Nationals,7-1. Gio Gonzalez, who came into the game with a streak of 44 start in which he allowed no more than one homer, serves up all three dingers, including back-to-back four baggers in the 5th.
Albert Pujols hits a 2-run homer in the 3rdas the Angels beat the Rangers, 2-0. For Pujols, his 569thhomer ties him with Rafael Palmiero for 12thplace on the career list.
The Orioles trade P Brian Matusz, who was with the club for 8 years, to the Braves for pitchers Brandon Barker and Trevor Belicek. Atlanta will release Matusz in a week and he will sign two weeks later for a cup of coffee with the Cubs.
25th The Mets shut out the Nationals, 2-0, behind Steven Matz. Matt becomes just the 4th pitcher since 1920 to win at least 7 consecutive starts while surrendering no more than 2 runs in any one. Others to accomplish the feat were Fernando Valenzuela (8 straight starts in 1981), Cal Eldred (7 in 1992) and Jered Weaver (7 in 2006).
The Cubs edge the Cardinals, 9-8, behind Jake Arrieta. Chicago has won the last 23 regular-season games started by Arrieta, tying the record for the longest such streak. The Braves won 23 consecutive games in which Kris Medlen was the starter from 2010 to 2012.
At Target Field, the Twins top the Royals, 7-5, with the win going to starter Tyler Duffey (2-3). Duffey becomes the first Twins hurler to win two games. He’ll finish the year with 9 wins, tops on the team.
Adam Lind has a single, double and 2 homers to lead the Mariners to a 13-3 drubbing of the Athletics. Lind has 6 RBIs.
26th The Rockies defeat the Red Sox, 8-2. Jackie Bradley Jr. goes hitless in 4 ABs, snapping his hitting streak at 29 games.
The Astros edge the Orioles, 4-2. Houston hurlers strike out 52 batters in the series against Baltimore, marking the highest total for a 3-game series since 1893. The previous high, set by Washington earlier this season, was 47.
27thJacob DeGrom pitches 7 strong innings and the Mets survive a Dodger 4-run rally in the 9thto beat Los Angeles, 6-5. Granderson, Lagares and David Wright homer for New York as the Mets tie for first place with the Nationals. For Wright, this is his last game of the season as he will be diagnosed with a herniated disk, requiring surgery.
At the Rogers Centre Josh Donaldson has 5 RBIs on a single, double and two homers to lead the Jays to a 7-5 win over the Red Sox. All of Donaldson’s hits knock in the go-ahead runs, something no batter has done in 51 seasons, according to Elias Sports Bureau.
28thLed by Buster Posey’s 6 RBIs, the Giants double the Rockies, 10-5. Posey has a pair of 3-run homers.
29th The Yankees edge the Rays, 2-1, on Starlin Castro’s 2-run HR off Odorizzi in the 7th inning. It is the Bombers only hit in the game and the first Yanks win on a one-hitter since 1914, when they took a 6-inning game from Cleveland.
30th The Cubs one-hit the Dodgers, winning, 2-0. Chicago starter Jason Hammel allows a single to Justin Turner in 2 innings of work before being removed due to hamstring cramps. Cubs relievers retire the last 21 LA batters in a row, becoming the first bullpen since 1917 to hurl at least 7 perfect innings in a game [In 1917, Babe Ruth was ejected after he walked one batter and Ernie Shore completed the no-hitter.]
At Marlins Park, the Pirates swamp the Marlins, 10-0, behind Jeff Locke’s 3-hitter. Gregory Polanco locks up the win with a grand slam and Sean Rodriguez adds a 2-run homer. The two game series with the Pirates was originally scheduled to be played in Puerto Rico, but concerns about the Zika virus caused to game to be moved.
31st The Dodgers shut out the Cubs, 5-0, on a one-hitter. Dexter Fowler’s single in the 3rd inning off Scott Kazmir is Chicago’s only safety. Jake Arrieta hurls 7 scoreless innings for the Cubs, without getting a decision. It ends a streak of 23 straight wins for Chicago in games Arrieta started.
The Giants shut out the Braves, 4-0, with 5 hurlers holding Atlanta to one hit. Tyler Flowers’ 5th inning single off Jake Peavy is the Braves only safety.
The Red Sox defeat the Orioles, 6-2, as Mookie Betts hits 3 HRs and drives in 5 runs.
