1stThe Cubs defeat the Indians, 9-3, to even the WS at 3 games apiece. Jake Arrieta gets the win. Addison Russell hits a grand slam and drives in 6 runs for Chicago. Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo also hitting HRs, while Jason Kipnis connects in a losing cause for Cleveland.

2ndAfter the Indians score 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to tie the score at 6-6, the Cubs bounce back with 2 runs in the 10th and hold on for an 8-7 win in Game 7 of the WS, and their first championship since 1908. A 17-minute rain delay allows the Cubs to regroup after a rousing talk in the clubhouse by Jason Heyward. Despite blowing the save by surrendering Rajai Davis’s 2-run HR, Aroldis Chapman receives credit for the win for Chicago. Dexter Fowler hits a HR as the first batter up in the game, and Javier Baez and David Ross also connect for the Cubs. Ross is the second player in ML history to hit a HR in the final game of his career, in the final game of a WS. Bobby Kiely did it in Game 4 of the 2007 series for the Red Sox. Three Cubs catchers homer. Ben Zobrist wins MVP honors for the Series.

The Reds trade P John Lamb to the Rays for cash.

3rdThe Tigers send OF Cameron Maybin to the Angels in exchange for P Victor Alcantara.

Angels ace Jered Weaver is granted free agency. He won 150 games in 11 seasons for the Angels.

The Yankees grant free agency to Billy Butler, signed in September.

4thThe Diamondbacks hire Torey Lovullo as their new manager.

The Astros send P Pat Neshek to the Phillies for a player to be named.

7thThe Dodgers trade C Carlos Ruiz to the Mariners for P Vidal Nuno.

The Rockies hire Bud Black as their new manager.

8thBaseball’s Gold Glove winners are announced. The Giants topped the NL squad with 3 winners, while the World Champion Cubs placed 2. In the AL, the Rangers had a pair of winners, including Adrian Beltre who won for the 5th time.

The Braves sign free agent knuckler R.A. Dickey to a one-year deal. Dickey was 10-15 with Toronto last season.

Baseball’s Silver Slugger awards are announced. Three Red Sox make the AL team, including DH David Ortiz for the seventh time. The Cubs, Nationals and Rockies each place 2 players on the NL team.

11th    The Dodgers send OF Howie Kendrick to the Phillies for first sacker Darin Ruf and second baseman Darnell Sweeney. Kendrick spent 11 seasons in Southern California, nine with the Angels.

Boston’s Mookie Betts wins Major League Baseball’s Defensive Player of the Year Award for 2016. The San Francisco Giants are honored as the top defensive team.

12th    The Athletics trade 3B Danny Valencia to the Mariners for P Paul Blackburn.

14th    LA Dodger Corey Seager and Detroit’s Michael Fulmer are named MLB’s Rookies of the Year in the NL and AL, respectively.

The Angels sign free agent P Jesse Chavez to a one-year deal.

15th    LA’s Dave Roberts and Cleveland’s Terry Francona are named MLB’s Managers of the Year in the NL and AL, respectively.

16th    Washington’s Max Scherzer and Boston’s Rick Porcello are named MLB’s Cy Young Award winners win the NL and AL, respectively. Scherzer is the sixth pitcher to win the award in both leagues. Porcello is the first AL hurler to win despite not receiving the most first-place votes. Justin Verlander, who garnered more first-place votes than Porcello, was backed by his girl friend actress Kate Hudson who tweeted, “I thought I was the only one allowed to fuck Justin Verlander.”

The Astros sign free agent P Charlie Morton to a two-year contract.

17th    Chicago’s Kris Bryant and LA’s Mike Trout are named MLB’S Most Valuable Players in the NL and AL, respectively. Bryant becomes the first player ever to win, in succession, the Golden Spikes Award, the Baseball America Minor League Player of the Year award, the Rookie of the Year award, and the Most Valuable Player award. For Trout, it is his second MVP in three years.

The Braves sign free agent P Bartolo Colon to a 1-year contract. The remarkable Colon won 44 games for the Mets in the past three seasons.

With phenom Sanchez now the starting catcher, the Yankees trade veteran Brian McCann and cash to the Astros for pitchers Albert Abreu and Jorge Guzman.

18th    The Blue Jays sign free agent DH Kendrys Morales to a 3-year deal.

The Rays trade 3B Richie Shaffer and SS Taylor Motter to the Mariners for pitchers Andrew Kittredge and Dylan Thompson and 1B Dalton Kelly.

The Yankees send P James Pazos to the Mariners for P Zack Little.

21stThe Rangers sign free agent P Andrew Cashner to a one-year contract. Injuries have slowed the pitcher the past two years.

The Cardinals sign free agent P Brett Cecil to a 4-year deal.

23rd   The Astros sign free agent OF Josh Reddick to a 4-year contract.

24th    The Diamondbacks obtain P Taijuan Walker and IF Ketel Marte from the Mariners in exchange for IF Jean Segura, OF Mitch Haniger and P Zac Curtis. Segura led the NL in at bats and hits in 2016. Walker was 19-19 the past two seasons for Seattle.

28th    The Braves send pitchers Rob Whalen and Max Povse to the Mariners for OF Alex Jackson and a player to be named.

29thWashington’s Anthony Rendon and Boston’s Rick Porcello are named winners of the Comeback Player of the Year Awards in the NL and AL, respectively.

The Cubs sign free agent OF Jon Jay to a one-year contract worth $8 million, a signal that they won’t be signing a long-term deal with Dexter Fowler.

Free agent Eric Thames, who played the last three seasons in South Korea hitting 124 homers, agrees to a 3-year $16 million contract with the Brewers. He will take the place of 1B Chris Carter, who the Brewers cut despite a 41-homer season. After a fast start MLB radio will call Thames “The Sultan of Brat.”

30thThe Athletics sign free agent OF Matt Joyce to a two-year deal.

Minnesota signs free agent C Jason Castro to a three-year contract.

The Braves sign free agent 1B Sean Rodriguez to a two-year deal.

The Mets trade P Logan Merrett to the Orioles for cash.

The Mets sign slugger Yoenis Cespedes, 30, agrees to a four-year $110 million deal with the Mets. This is short of the 8-year $138 extension with David Wright and the $137.5M contract with Johan Santana in 2007.

David Ortiz of the Red Sox wins the Outstanding Designated Hitter Award for the 8th time.
