25th Lou Boudreau is named player-manager of the Cleveland Indians. Boudreau, at 24 years, 4 months, and 8 days, is the youngest manager appointed this century. Scotland-born Jim McCormick managed Cleveland in 1879 at the age of 23.

13th Joe DiMaggio is named AL MVP. His 56-game hitting streak edges out Ted Williams and his .406 batting average for the award (291 votes for DiMaggio and 254 for Williams). The NL winner is Dolph Camilli with Dodger teammates Pete Reiser and Whit Wyatt finishing 2nd and 3rd. The next time the vote will have teammates 2nd and 3rd will be in the AL, in 1959. Both Camilli and DiMaggio also win The Sporting News MVP Awards.

26th The Phillies name Hans Lobert as their new manager, replacing Doc Prothro. At age 60 years and a month, Lobert is the oldest rookie manager ever. The Phils finished last under Doc and will finish last under Hans.
