2nd  The Pirates name Bobby Bragan as their new field manager, replacing Fred Haney.

5th Bert Wilson, the radio voice of the Chicago Cubs on station WIND since 1943, dies at the age of 44. The cause was high blood pressure.

8th  The Senators trade stalwarts Mickey Vernon, Bob Porterfield, Johnny Schmitz and Tom Umphlett to the Red Sox for 5 young players: P Dick Brodowski, P Truman Clevenger, P Al Curtis, and outfielders Neil Chrisley and Karl Olson.

21st  In an obvious power struggle for control, the principal founding father of Little League, Carl Stotz, sues the organization for breach of contract. The suit will be settled out of court.

28th  The Cubs trade P Hal Jeffcoat to the Redlegs for C Hobie Landrith. They also draft veteran Monte Irvin from the Giants organization.
