1st  Denny McLain is the unanimous AL winner of the Cy Young Award.

3rd  Cardinal broadcaster Harry Caray is struck by a car while crossing a street in St. Louis, and he suffers two broken legs, a broken shoulder, and a broken nose.

5th  Denny McLain is the unanimous choice as AL MVP.

13th  Bob Gibson edges Pete Rose to win the NL MVP award.  Fittingly in the year of the pitcher, it is the only year in which both MVPs are hurlers.

19th  Yankees P Stan Bahnsen, who was 17-12, is named AL Rookie of the Year.

21st  Cincinnati trades SS Leo Cardenas to the Twins for P Jim Merritt.

22nd  Cincinnati C Johnny Bench is named NL Rookie of the Year, getting 1012votes to edge out New York’s Jerry Koosman who had 912. One voter splits his vote giving a half vote to each. Bench is the 3rd Reds’ player in 6 years to be named the top rookie.
