2nd The Yankees name Joe Torre as their new manager, replacing Buck Showalter.

7th Baseball signs a $1.7 billion, 5-year deal with Fox, NBC, ESPN, and Liberty Media.

Former P Mitch Williams is cleared of rape charges filed against him by a Kentucky woman in February of 1994.

9th Dodgers P Hideo Nomo (13–6) is named NL Rookie of the Year, becoming the 1st Japanese player ever to win a major American baseball award.

11th  Minnesota’s Marty Cordova is named AL Rookie of the Year, winning by 6 points over California’s Garret Anderson, who outhit him by 44 points.

Gaffney Street, near the former site of Braves Field in Boston, is renamed Harry Agganis Way, after the former Boston College and Red Sox star who died during the 1955 season.

13th Atlanta P Greg Maddux wins the NL Cy Young Award for an unprecedented 4th straight time.  Maddux had a remarkable 19–2 record with a 1.63 ERA, the 2nd year his ERA is below 1.80.  Only Walter Johnson has done that.

The NL MVP Award goes to Reds SS Barry Larkin.

14th Mark Kotsay, of Cal State Fullerton, is named as winner of the Golden Spikes Award as the nation’s top amateur baseball player.

15th The Arizona Diamondbacks, who will not begin play until the 1998 season, sign Buck Showalter to a 7-year contract as manager.

16th The Oakland Athletics name Art Howe as their manager.

20th The Yankees trade minor league P Mike DeJean and a player to be named to the Rockies for C Joe Girardi. Girardi will solidify the catching for New York, while DeJean will set a ML mark for most appearances without a loss. He’ll go 7–0 through 1998, while making 88 appearances, breaking a little-known mark set by Phil Paine. DeJean will be 2–4 in ’99.

21st The Marlins sign free agent OF Devon White to a 3-year contract worth $9.9 million.

22nd The Angels sign free agent IF Randy Velarde to a 3-year contract.

27th Pat Gillick is named GM of the Baltimore Orioles.

29th The Dodgers trade second baseman Miguel Cairo and 3B Willis Otanez to the Mariners in exchange for 3B Mike Blowers.

30th The Dodgers sign free agent SS Greg Gagne.
