1st The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum opens in its new home in Kansas City, Missouri. It had been occupying a temporary site there for 4 years.
3rd In a unanimous vote, Nomar Garciaparra is named American League Rookie of the Year. The Boston SS is the first rookie ever to bat .300, with 30 homers, 90 ribbies, and 20 stolen bases. He also led the AL in hits and his 98 RBIs set a record for a leadoff batter. He’s the first Sox rookie to win the honor since Fred Lynn, in 1975.
4th The Phillies Scott Rolen is named National League Rookie of the Year. He barely qualified as a rookie, logging exactly 130 at bats in 1996 before breaking his wrist on September 7 when he was hit by a pitch. One more at bat would disqualified him for the award in 1997.
Former Red Sox IF-OF Wil Cordero pleads guilty to beating his wife, and gets a 90-day sentence, suspended for 2 years. Cordero was arrested on June 11th.
Former Angels IF-OF Tony Phillips pleads guilty to misdemeanor cocaine possession and is ordered into a drug diversion program. Phillips was arrested on August 10th.
5th In what Bud Selig says is Phase 1 of a realignment of the major leagues, his Milwaukee Brewers move from the AL to the NL.
Davey Johnson resigns as manager of the Orioles just hours before he is named the American League Manager of the Year. Baltimore owner Peter Angelos had refused to give Johnson a vote of confidence after saying earlier that Johnson would be back in 1998.
6th Dusty Baker is named National League Manager of the Year.
The Red Sox trade pitchers Aaron Sele and Mark Brandenburg and C Bill Haselman to the Rangers in exchange for C Jim Leyritz and OF Damon Buford.
7th Tampa Bay hires Larry Rothschild, former Florida Marlins’ pitching coach, as its first ever manager.
The Yankees trade P Kenny Rogers to the Athletics in exchange for a player to be named.
10th Roger Clemens is named American League Cy Young Award winner. He is the first pitcher since Bob Feller in 1945 to lead the AL in wins, strikeouts and ERA. He’ll repeat next year.
The Reds trade P Jeff Brantley to the Cardinals in exchange for 1B Dmitri Young.
11th Pedro Martinez is named National League Cy Young Award winner.

The Minnesota state legislature turns down the Twins’ stadium proposal by a vote of 84-47.
17th The Diamondbacks sign free agent SS Jay Bell to a 5-year contract.
The Braves sign free agent SS Walt Weiss to a 3-year contract.
18th The expansion draft for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks is held in Phoenix, Arizona. Florida pitcher Tony Saunders is taken with the 1st pick by the Devil Rays, while the Diamondbacks select pitcher Brian Anderson from Cleveland. Following the draft, the Diamondbacks acquire 3B Travis Fryman from the Tigers in exchange for infielders Joe Randa and Gabe Alvarez and P Matt Drews. They also obtain OF Devon White from the Marlins for P Jesus Martinez. In a rash of moves, the Devil Rays get 1B Fred McGriff from the Braves for a player to be named, C John Flaherty from the Padres for P Brian Boehringer and IF Andy Sheets, SS Kevin Stocker from the Phillies for Bobby Abreu, and sign free agent P Roberto Hernandez to a 4-year contract.
In one of their best swaps ever, the Red Sox obtain Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez from the Expos in exchange for P Carl Pavano and a player to be named (Tony Armas, Jr.). Montreal turns down the Yankees offer of 3B Mike Lowell and C Jorge Posada.
The Rockies acquire second baseman Mike Lansing from the Expos in exchange for pitchers Jake Westbrook and John Nicholson and OF Mike Hamlin.
