1st The Dodgers name coach Jim Tracy as their new manager.

The Phillies pick former Phils SS Larry Bowa as their new manager.

2nd The Blue Jays select former C and announcer Buck Martinez as their new manager.

Todd Helton of the Rockies is named The Associated Press Player of the Year.

3rd After being turned down by several candidates, the Reds name Bob Boone as their new manager.

6th Mariners relief P Kazuhiro Sasaki wins the AL Rookie of the Year award. He is the second-oldest player to ever win rookie honors; only Sam Jethroe, who played in the Negro Leagues before the Braves, was older.

7th Braves SS Rafael Furcal wins the NL Rookie of the Year award.

Sandy Alderson, executive vice president of baseball operations in the commissioner’s office announces that baseball will try to bring back the high strike next season.

8th Jerry Manuel of the Chicago White Sox is named the AL Manager of the Year.

The Rockies obtain P Ron Villone from the Reds for 2 minor league players to be named. They’ll complete the trade next month by sending Justin Carter and Jeff Tahlienti to the Reds.

9th Dusty Baker of the SF Giants is named the NL Manager of the Year for a record 3rd time.

13th Red Sox P Pedro Martinez is the unanimous winner of the AL Cy Young Award for the 2nd consecutive year, giving him 3 wins in the last 4 years.

14th Diamondbacks P Randy Johnson wins his 2nd consecutive NL Cy Young Award, and his 3rd overall.

15th Athletics 1B Jason Giambi wins the AL MVP Award. Giambi hit .333 with 43 homers and 137 RBIs.

16th Giants 2B Jeff Kent wins the NL MVP Award, just edging out teammate Barry Bonds.  Kent hit 334 with 33 homers and 114 RBIs for the NL West champs. Bonds had 49 homers and scored 129 runs.

The Red Sox obtain IF Chris Stynes from the Reds for OF Michael Coleman and IF Donnie Sadler.

The Indians obtain C Eddie Taubensee from the Reds for pitchers Jim Brower and Robert Pugmire.

The Cubs sign free agent P Julian Tavarez to a two-year contract.

The Toronto Blue Jays announce that they will open the 2001 season against the Texas Rangers in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

17th The Rangers swap pitchers Ryan Cullen and Aaron Harang to the A’s for 2B Randy Velarde.

The Phillies sign free agent P Jose Mesa to a two-year contract worth $3.4 million.

18th The Mariners sign Japanese star OF Ichiro Suzuki to a three-year contract.

19th The Indians sign free agent OF Ellis Burks to a three-year contract.

The Cubs obtain 3B Bill Mueller from the Giants in exchange for P Tim Worrell.

20th The Astros sign free agent IF Jose Vizcaino to a contract.

21st The Yankees sign free agent C Joe Oliver to a contract.

22nd The Blue Jays obtain P Steve Parris from the Reds for pitchers Clayton Andrews and Leo Estrella.

29th The Phillies sign free agent P Rheal Cormier to a three-year contract worth $2.9 million.

30th The Yankees sign Orioles free agent P Mike Mussina to a 6-year contract worth $88.5 million. Mussina says a deciding factor was a call from Joe Torre.
