2ndThe AL Gold Glove winners are announced. Ivan Rodriguez wins his 12thaward, extending his record for catchers. Outfielders Ichiro Suzuki and Torii Hunter and 3B Eric Chavez win for the 6thstraight season.

3rdThe NL Gold Glove winners are announced. P Greg Maddux wins his 16thaward, tying the record shared by P Jim Kaat and 3B Brooks Robinson. SS Omar Vizquel wins his 11thaward, while OF Andruw Jones wins his 9thin a row.

6thThe Rangers hire Oakland Athletics’ coach Ron Washington as their new manager.

The Athletics reach a deal with Cisco Systems Inc. to build a new ballpark in Fremont. If approved by the city, the A’s could begin playing there as soon as 2011.

The Cubs sign free agent 2B/OF Alfonso Soriano to an 8-year, $136 million contract. Besides being baseball’s first 40-40-40 man, he had 22 outfield assists.

The Mets sign free agent OF Moises Alou to a contract.

The Marlins send pitchers Adam Bostick and Jason Vargas to the Mets in exchange for pitchers Matt Lindstrom and Henry Owens. Florida also sends P Chris Resop to the Angels for P Kevin Gregg.

The Reds agree to a three-year contract with free agent SS Alex Gonzalez, and a two-year contract with P Mike Stanton. Cincinnati also sends C Jason LaRue to the Royals for a player to be named.

The Orioles sign free agent P Jamie Walker to a three-year deal.

21stMinnesota’s Justin Morneau is named AL Most Valuable Player, edging out Derek Jeter of the Yankees.

22ndThe Dodgers sign free agent OF Juan Pierre to a five-year $44 million contract.

In a rare misstep, the Angels sign free agent OF Gary Matthews Jr. to a five-year $50 million contract.  For Matthews, who is coming off a career year, this is his seventh team (San Diego twice).

24thThe Astros sign free agent OF Carlos Lee to a 6-year deal and free agent P Woody Williams to a two-year deal.

25thThe Diamondbacks acquire pitchers Doug Davis and Dana Eveland and OF Dave Krynzel from the Brewers in exchange for C Johnny Estrada and pitchers Greg Aquino and Claudio Vargas.

The Indians reach a preliminary agreement with free agent OF David Dellucci on a three-year deal.

28thThe Dodgers sign free agent P Randy Wolf to a one-year $8 million contract.

The Cardinals sign free agent 2B Adam Kennedy to a three-year contract and P Kip Wells to a one-year deal. Kennedy will play two years and the Cards will give him his release a week before the start of spring training 2009.
