The San Francisco Chroniclereports OF Jose Guillen and former MLers Matt Williams and Ismael Valdez purchased performance-enhancing drugs from 2002 to 2005.

7thThe Astros send Brad Lidge and utility player Eric Bruntlett to the Phillies for OF Michael Bourn, righthanded reliever Geoff Geary and third-base prospect Mike Costanzo. Bourn will be the starting center fielder, moving Hunter Pence to right field.

8thThe Tampa Bay Devil Rays officially shorten their nickname to the Rays. The team also unveils new uniforms and new team colors.

9thSilver Slugger Awards are announced. Alex Rodriguez wins his 9th, tying Barry Larkin for 3rdplace on the all-time win list. Vladimir Guerrero wins for the 7thtime, while David Ortiz wins his 4thin a row.

12thThe Cubs send OF Jacque Jones to the Tigers for utility IF Omar Infante. Jones hit .285 in each of the last two seasons, but after a poor start in 2008, the Tigers will cut him after 24 games.

Brewers third sacker Ryan Braun edges Troy Tulowitzki by 2 points in balloting for the NL Rookie of the Year Award. Braun set a rookie record with a .634 slugging percentage but his fielding percentage (.895) wasn’t much higher. Dustin Pedroia wins the AL award in a runaway, easily topping Delmon Young.

CC Sabathia wins the AL Cy Young Award by a comfortable margin over Josh Beckett.

14thCleveland’s Eric Wedge and Arizona’s Bob Melvin win the AL and NL Manager of the Year awards.
