1st      The Yankees score 3 runs in the 9thinning to defeat the Phillies, 7-4, and take a commanding 3-games-to-1 lead in the WS. Joba Chamberlain gets the win in relief for NY. Chase Utley and Pedro Feliz homer for the losers.

Derek Jeter and Albert Pujols win the Hank Aaron Award in fan voting for the best offensive players in their respective leagues.

2ndThe Phillies defeat the Yankees, 8-6, to win Game 5 of the WS, Cliff Lee gets his 2ndwin of the Classic, backed by a homer by Raul Ibanez and a pair from Chase Utley. The homers give Utley five for the Series, tying the mark set by Reggie Jackson in 1977. He becomes just the second player to have a pair of two-HR games in a Series. Willie Aikens did so for the Royals in 1980.

3rdThe Rays trade 2B Akinori Iwamura to the Pirates in exchange for P Jesse Chavez.

4thThe Yankees defeat the Phillies, 7-3, to win their 27thWS title. Andy Pettitte gets the win to extend his ML record to 18 postseason victories. Hideki Matsui hits a 2-run homer for NY, while Ryan Howard connects for Philadelphia. Matsui ties a Series record by driving home 6 runs, and is named the Series MVP.

5thThe Red Sox obtain OF Jeremy Hermida from the Marlins in exchange for minor league pitchers Hunter Jones and Jose Alvarez.

6thThe White Sox get 3B Mark Teahen from the Royals for infielders Chris Getz, Josh Fields, and cash considerations. On December 8th, they’ll sign him to a three-year $14 million extension to avoid arbitration.

The Twins send OF Carlos Gomez to the Brewers for SS J.J. Hardy.

10thThe AL Gold Glove Award winners are announced. Ichiro Suzuki and Torii Hunter each wins for the 9thtime, while Mark Buehrle, Evan Longoria and Adam Jones win for the first time. Joe Mauer (2), Mark Teixeira (3), Placido Polanco (2), and Derek Jeter (4) also take honors.

11thThe NL Gold Glove Award winners are announced. Orlando Hudson wins for the 4thtime and Jimmy Rollins for the 3rd. Yadier Molina, Adrian Gonzalez and Shane Victorino each pick up their 2ndawards. Adam Wainwright, Ryan Zimmerman, Michael Bourn and Matt Kemp all win for the 1sttime.

12thThe Nationals name interim manager Jim Riggleman as their new skipper.

Derek Jeter and Chase Utley each win their 4thSilver Slugger Award. Mark Teixeira, Aaron Hill, Evan Longoria, Ichiro Suzuki, Jason Bay, Torii Hunter, Joe Mauer, and Adam Lind join Jeter on the AL team. Albert Pujols, Ryan Zimmerman, Hanley Ramirez, Ryan Braun, Andre Ethier, Matt Kemp, Brian McCann, and Carlos Zambrano join Utley on the NL squad.

16thOakland pitcher Andrew Bailey and Florida OF Chris Coghlan are announced as winners of the Rookie of the Year award in the AL and NL respectively.

17thKC’s Zack Greinke is named winner of the AL Cy Young Award. Seattle’s Felix Hernandez is runner-up.

18thJim Tracy and Mike Scioscia are named winners of the Manager of the Year award in the NL and AL respectively.

19thTim Lincecum wins his second straight Cy Young Award beating out Cardinal righthanders Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter. For the second time in history, the winner does not receive the most first-place votes; Lincecum garners 11 of the 32 votes, while Carpenter cops 12, but is left off completely on two ballots. Tom Glavine, in 1998, was the other winner who did not capture the most first-place votes.

The Diamondbacks acquire P Aaron Heilman from the Cubs for minor leaguers Scott Maine (P) and Ryne White (IF).

23rdJoe Mauer of the Twins wins the AL Most Valuable Player Award in a near-unanimous vote. Mark Teixeira is runner-up. Mauer is just the second AL catcher (Mickey Cochrane, 1933) to lead the league in OBP.

The White Sox sign free agent SS Omar Vizquel to a contract. The veteran shortstop will switch from the #13 he’s worn throughout his career to #11 in honor of fellow countryman Luis Aparicio.  The Sox had retired #11 but Little Looey will give permission to un-retire it for Vizquel. His #13, which he wore in honor of Dave Concepcion, is worn by Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, who won’t give it up.

24thAlbert Pujols is the unanimous winner of the NL MVP Award. Hanley Ramirez is runner-up, followed by Ryan Howard and Prince Fielder. It is the 3rdaward for Pujols, who also won last year and in 2005.

25thThe White Sox sign free agent OF Andruw Jones to a contract.

The Royals send IF Tug Hulett to the Red Sox for cash or a player to be named.
