1st     Three Dodgers—Clayton Kershaw, Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier—and three Red Sox—Adrian Gonzalez, Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury—are named as 2011 Gold Glove winners.

The Cubs introduce Theo Epstein at a press conference along with Jed Hoyer as the new executive veep, and Jason McLeod as senior veep/scouting player development. All three come from the Red Sox.

2ndThe Cubs fire Mike Quade as their manager and state that they want a manager with ML experience.

7thThe Royals trade OF Melky Cabrera to the offense-starving Giants for starter Jonathan Sanchez and minor league P Ryan Verdugo. After fading in Atlanta, Cabrera had a turn-around year in 2011, collecting 201 hits and batting .305.

9thNationals rookie catcher Wilson Ramos is kidnapped by gunmen from his home in Venezuela. He will be rescued by Venezuelan police in two days and three of his abductors will be arrested.

10thThe Pirates sign free agent C Rod Barajas to a one-year contract.

11thThe Twins sign free agent IF Jamey Carroll to a two-year $6.5M contract. The 37-year-old hit .290 for the Dodgers last year.

The Phillies agree to a four-year $50 million contract with free agent closer Jonathan Papelbon.

On 11/11/11, the Florida Marlins officially change their name to the Miami Marlins, and introduce their new uniforms.

13thThe Cardinals hire ex-catcher Mike Matheny as their new manager. Matheny has not managed at any level.

14thThe Braves Craig Kimbrel and the Rays Jeremy Hellickson win Rookie of the Year awards in the NL and AL respectively. Kimbrel set a rookie record with 46 saves.

15thJustin Verlander is the unanimous winner of the AL Cy Young Award. He won the AL pitching triple crown.

16thKirk Gibson of the Diamondbacks and Joe Maddon of the Rays win Manager of the Year honors in the NL and AL respectively.

17thClayton Kershaw is named winner of the NL Cy Young Award.

The Cubs hire Brewers 3B coach Dale Sveum as their new manager. Sveum had been courted by the Red Sox, but the Cubs choose him over former Cub great Ryne Sandberg, manager of the Phillies triple A affiliate, who was named minor league manager of the year by Baseball America.

MLB approves the sale of the Houston Astros, and their move to the AL West in 2013. The sale was conditional on accepting the move.

20thThe Phillies acquire utility player Ty Wigginton from the Rockies for either a player to be named or cash.

21stTigers P Justin Verlander is named winner of the AL MVP award.

The Pirates agree to terms on a two-year contract with free agent SS Clint Barmes.

Promising Mariners outfielder Dutch-born Greg Halman is stabbed to death in the Netherlands by his younger brother.

The Rangers agree to a two-year contract with free agent P Joe Nathan.

22ndBrewers OF Ryan Braun wins the NL MVP award with the Dodgers Matt Kemp finishing second. Kemp, with better numbers but a worse team, says about the sports writers’ vote, “You all have created a monster. Next year I’m gonna hit 50 homers and steal 50 bases.” Kemp wins every other honor including Baseball America’s major league player of the year.

23rdThe Padres send P Wade LeBlanc to the Marlins in exchange for C John Baker.

26thThe Blue Jays acquire 2B Luis Valbuena from the Indians for cash considerations.

27thThe Rays obtain P Josh Lueke and a player to be named or cash from the Mariners in exchange for C John Jaso.

28thThe Rays sign free agent C Jose Molina to a one-year deal.

29thThe Royals agree to a one-year $4M contract with free agent P Jonathan Broxton.

30thThe Cubs reach agreement on a two-year $10M contract with free agent OF David DeJesus.

The Red Sox announce that veteran manager and baseball commentator Bobby Valentine is the team’s new manager for 2012. Valentine last managed in Japan in 2009.

The Angels acquire C Chris Iannetta from the Rockies in exchange for P Tyler Chatwood.
