2ndThe Marlins introduce former C Mike Redmond as their new manager.

3rdThe Indians trade P Esmil Rogers to the Blue Jays for infielders Mike Aviles and Brazilian-born catcherYan Gomes. Gomes will win the catching job in spring training when he declines to play for Brazil in the WBC. Regular catcher Carlos Santana elects to play for the Dominican Republic in the WBC, opening the door for Gomes. Gomes will hit .294 with 11 homers in 88 games.

5th  Miguel Cabrera is honored as player of the year by his fellow major leaguers.

7thThe Rockies hire former SS Walt Weiss as their new manager. He had been coaching at a local Jesuit high school, but has maintained his ties with the Rox.

Oakland’s Billy Beane is named Executive of the Year by The Sporting News.

8thThe Blue Jays sign free agent IF Maicer Izturis to a 3-year contract.

12thThe Angels’ Mike Trout and the Nationals’ Bryce Harper win Rookie of the Year awards in the AL and NL respectively. Trout becomes the youngest AL winner ever, and the league’s 8thunanimous pick. Harper edges out Diamondbacks P Wade Miley for NL honors.

13thThe Athletics’ Bob Melvin and the Nationals’ Davey Johnson are named Manager of the Year in the AL and NL, respectively. The two become the 5thand 6thmanagers to win the award in each league.

The Marlins pull the plug—again–and complete a 12-player trade with the Blue Jays. The Fish move major contracts, sending SS Jose Reyes, pitchers Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle, C John Buck and UT Emilio Bonifacio to Toronto, while SS Yunel Escobar, P Henderson Alvarez, C Jeff Mathis and prospects Adeiny Hechevarria (SS), Anthony DeSclafani (P), Jake Marisnick (OF) and Justin Nicolino (P) move on to Miami. Buehrle pitched 202 innings this season and became the 23rd major-leaguer to record 12 straight campaigns with 200 or more innings pitched. The Marlins nine minor league teams had the best overall winning percentage this year and the trade can only help that.

The Cubs sign free agent P Scott Baker to a 1-year deal worth $5.5 million. Baker, who last started a game on August 8, 2011, for the Twins, had Tommy John surgery and missed 2012.  He will finally make a start for the Cubs on September 8.

14thKnuckleballer RA Dickey of the Mets and David Price of the Rays are named Cy Young Award winners in the NL and AL, respectively. Price edges out Justin Verlander of the Tigers in the 2nd-closest AL race in history.

The Red Sox finalize a 2-year deal with free agent catcher David Ross. It is his second tour of duty in Boston for the premier backup catcher.

15thThe Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera and the Giants’ Buster Posey are named winners of the Most Valuable Player award in the AL and NL, respectively. It is only the 3rdtime that both league batting champions also won the MVP award. Charlie Gehringer and Joe Medwick turned the trick in 1937, followed by Jimmie Foxx and Ernie Lombardi the next year.

16thThe Cubs announce the signing of a 1-year deal with free agent C Dioner Navarro.

The Athletics send P Tyson Ross and minor league first sacker AJ Kirby-Jones to the Padres in exchange for IF Andy Parrino and P Andrew Werner.

The Braves agree to a 2-year deal with free agent C Gerald Laird.

The Tigers finalize a 2-year deal with free agent OF Torii Hunter.

Got Melk. The Blue Jays sign free agent OF Melky Cabrera to a 2-year contract for $16M.. Cabrera has finished his 50-game suspension for testing positive for drugs, but was not activated for the post-season by the Giants.

20thThe Blue Jays hire John Gibbons as their manager. Gibbons previously skippered Toronto from 2004-2008.

The Mariners acquire IF Robert Andino from the Orioles for OF Trayvon Robinson.

22ndThe Red Sox sign free agent OF Jonny Gomes to a 2-year deal.

27thThe Cubs sign free agent P Scott Feldman to a 1-year contract.

28thThe Red Sox trade P Zach Stewart to the Pirates, P Sandy Rosario to the Athletics for players to be named, and 3B Danny Valencia to the Orioles for cash considerations.

The Royals send P Vin Mazzaro and 1B Clint Robinson, one-time Texas League Triple Crown winner, to the Pirates for minor league pitchers Luis Santos and Luis Rico.

The Rangers acquire P Cory Burns from the Padres for a player to be named or cash.

The Angels sign free agent P Ryan Madson to a 1-year deal.

29th The Nationals obtain a needed centerfielder acquiring Denard Span from the Twins for 6’9” minor league P Alex Meyer.

      In a flatout bad deal the Braves reach agreement on a 5-year $75,250,000 contract with free agent outfielder BJ Upton. BJ will change his name–to Melvin Upton–and his team before the five years are up.

      The Pirates agree to terms on a 2-year $17M contract with free agent C Russell Martin, who turned down the Yanks offer for a one-year deal. Meyer is a former first-round pick of the Nationals.

30thThe Braves send P Tommy Hanson to the Angels for P Jordan Walden.

The Athletics acquire P Chris Resop from the Pirates for minor league P Zach Thornton.
