The NCAA Division I votes unanimously to switch to a flat-seamed ball from a raised-seam ball for the 2015 season. The switch is an attempt to inject more offense into the college game. D-II and D-III leagues are expected to follow suit. A study by the NCAA revealed that a flat-seamed ball travels 20 feet further (367 vs. 387 feet) out of a pitching set to simulate typical home run conditions. The study was presented to coaches in October, and 87 percent of them voting approved the change.

20thIn a major trade, the Tigers send slugging 1B/DH Prince Fielder and cash to the Rangers in exchange for second baseman Ian Kinsler. Kinsler, who missed a month of action with a strained rib muscle, will take over for Peralta, now a free agent. His leaving clears the position for blue-chipper Juriskson Profar. Fielder will hit just 3 homers for Texas in 2014 before having season-ending neck surgery in June.
