1st Red Ruffing pitches the Yankees to a 3–2 win over the Dodgers at Yankee Stadium in the opening game of the World Series. Joe Gordon chips in with a HR and RBI single.

2nd Dodgers ace Whit Wyatt trims the Yankees in a 3–2 Brooklyn win in game 2.

Buffalo’s Freddie Hutchinson wins the International League MVP. Hutch, who won the PCL MVP in 1938, won 26 games on the mound. He also hit .385 in 72 games.

4th In the 7th inning of a scoreless tie, Yankees pitcher Marius Russo breaks P Fred Fitzsimmons’ knee with a line drive off the kneecap. The ball caroms to Reese who throws him out to end the inning. The Yankees score 2 in the 8th off Hugh Casey to win 2–1. Fitzsimmons will pitch in just one game in 1942 before retiring to the coaching ranks.

5th With 2 out in the 9th inning, Dodger C Mickey Owen drops a 3rdstrike on Tommy Henrich, which would have given Brooklyn a 4–3 victory over New York. The Yankees then rally for a 7–4 win in the 4th game of the World Series. Keller has 2 singles and 2 doubles to lead Yanks.

Helped by a triple play, the White Sox top the Cubs, 6–0, for their third win in a row and their second shutout in the Windy City series. Johnny Rigney applies the calcimine.

The attraction of Bob Feller versus Satchel Paige draws a crowd of 10,136 to Sportsman’s Park as the Miguel Gonzalez All-Stars play the Kansas City Monarchs. The two aces retire half way through, with Feller ahead 4–1. Frank Crespi and Johnny Lucadello have the hits to drive in the runs off Paige. The final is 5–1 with Al Barlick umping.

6th The New York Yankees top the Brooklyn Dodgers 3–1 to take the World Series in 5 games. Pitcher Ernie Bonham of the Yankees retires the side on 3 pitches in the 7th inning. Tiny is less successful at the plate, fanning 4 times.

7th At Comiskey Park, Thornton Lee goes the distance for the White Sox as they win, 3-1, to sweep the four-game city series with the Cubs.

23rd In Havana’s La Tropical Stadium, Venezuela wins the IBA World Championship, 3–1, over Cuba. In the classic matchup, Chino Canonico bests Connie Marrero, who gives up all 3 runs in the first inning. The 2 aces will face each other next year in a rematch.
